FDG PET in Neurological Manifestations of COVID-19.

Clin Nucl Med

June 2024

Department of Nuclear Medicine & PET/CT, Mahajan Imaging & labs, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.

Both the central and peripheral nervous systems can be affected in COVID-19. Although MRI is the primary investigative tool for neurological imaging, FDG PET may show additional areas of involvement in the brain in the form of regional hypometabolism or hypermetabolism, secondary to synaptic dysfunction and electrical or glial activation. We present a case series of 4 patients who had neurological symptoms attributable to COVID-19 infection with abnormalities in the brain FDG PET scan.

The prevalence and burden of diabetes are on the rise in India, making it 'the diabetes capital of the world'. Comorbidities such as obesity, cardiovascular (CV) complications, chronic kidney disease (CKD), non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and neurodegenerative diseases are common in patients with diabetes. Recent breakthroughs in diabetes medications and continuous glucose monitoring have resulted in a paradigm shift in diabetes care.

Follicular-patterned thyroid nodules (FPTN) are classified byWHO-2022 into benign, borderline and malignant categories. There are however, grey-zone lesions that pose a diagnostic challenge due to ambiguity in defining criteria and inter-observer variability. WHO-2022 has enumerated specific diagnostic criteria for these lesions.

Introduction: Multiple primary neoplasms (MPN) are rare and can affect any system especially the upper aero-digestive system. They can be simultaneous, synchronous or metachronous. Their management depends on the individual organ system affected and simultaneous resection is possible as shown by T.

Primary leiomyosarcoma with osteosarcomatous differentiation of the breast is an uncommon entity. We present the case of a 37-year-old female who presented with a lump in the breast and pulmonary lesions on PET-CT, for which she underwent a toilet mastectomy. Histopathological examination revealed a tumor with cells arranged in sheets.

Objectives Laparoscopic intraperitoneal onlay mesh hernioplasty (IPOM) for ventral hernias has been used for a long time. However, there have been some issues associated with it, thereby leading to the introduction of a new technique that involves laparoscopic closure of the fascial defect with suture followed by intraperitoneal onlay mesh placement (IPOM-Plus). We carried out this study to compare the outcome of laparoscopic IPOM with fascial defect closure versus without defect closure in midline ventral hernia repair in terms of recurrence.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the relationship between ammonia levels and liver-related complications (LRCs) in patients with acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF).
  • Higher ammonia levels were found in ACLF patients with LRCs, especially those experiencing overt hepatic encephalopathy (HE) and ascites, but not bacterial infections.
  • Baseline arterial ammonia levels were identified as an independent predictor of 30-day mortality, but they did not predict the development of new LRCs within that timeframe.

is an herbal therapy for various afflictions. It has some potential to be a promising option as an efficacious treatment for COVID-19 patients that can contribute to global healthcare as a relatively cheap therapy but evidence of its use from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) is limited. Therefore, to explore the effect of in combating COVID-19, we undertook this meta-analysis.

Acute panmyelosis with myelofibrosis (APMF) corresponds to <1% cases of acute myeloid leukemia, which could be an underestimation due to missed diagnosis. Due to its rapidly fatal course, it warrants a timely and correct diagnosis. We present a case of a 44-year male who came with a short history of fever, generalised weakness, revealed pancytopenia with occasional circulating blast in the peripheral blood smear.

Background: Chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) is a debilitating affliction that affects diverse quality of life (QoL) parameters such as sleep, self-esteem, and daily activities. Second-generation antihistamines, such as desloratadine, are more effective and safer in managing CSU. Desloratadine is a nonsedating, potent, and highly selective H1 receptor antagonist.

Background: Robotic technique of surgery allows surgeons to perform complex procedures in difficult-to-access areas of the abdominal/pelvic cavity (eg, radical prostatectomy and radical hysterectomy) with improved access and precision approach. At the same time, automated techniques efficiently deliver propofol total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) with lower anesthetic consumption. As both above are likely to bring benefit to the patients, it is imperative to explore their effect on postanesthesia recovery.

Liver transplantation is a highly complex and challenging field of clinical practice. Although it was originally developed in western countries, it has been further advanced in Asian countries through the use of living donor liver transplantation. This method of transplantation is the only available option in many countries in the Asia-Pacific region due to the lack of deceased organ donation.

Background And Objectives: Endoscopic ultrasound guided fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) is a minimally invasive and reliable non-surgical technique for the diagnosis of gastrointestinal lesions. The present study aimed to evaluate the spectrum of lesions encountered in the gastric subepithelium on EUS-FNA at a tertiary care center.

Materials And Methods: Archival data of all patients undergoing EUS-FNA for gastric submucosal lesions over a period of 5 years was retrieved.

Primary neurolymphomatosis presenting as foot drop: A rare case report.

Indian J Pathol Microbiol

October 2024

Department of Histopathology and Cytopathology, BLK-MAX Hospital, New Delhi, India.

Neurolymphomatosis (NL) is the direct infiltration of the peripheral nervous system (PNS) by lymphoma cells and represents the least common form of PNS involvement by lymphoma. Clinical presentation is varied, and early diagnosis remains challenging. Nerve biopsy remains the diagnostic gold standard, use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) may help in diagnosis and selecting targets for biopsy.

Introduction: Pauci-immune crescentic glomerulonephritis (PICN) is an important cause of rapidly progressive renal failure. 10-40% of PICN cases have ANCA (antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody) negative serology. The present study compared clinico-pathologic features, Brix's renal risk score, Berden's histopathological classes and differences in outcome between ANCAnegative vs ANCA positive PICN patients.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a fatal neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive skeletal muscle denervation and loss of motor neurons that results in muscle atrophy and eventual death due to respiratory failure. Previously, we identified a novel SOD1 variation in a familial ALS case. In this study, we examined the functional consequences of SOD1 overexpression in the mouse motor neuron cell line (NSC-34).

Despite numerous improvements in the management of acute coronary syndrome(ACS), it is a major cause of mortality in India. Lipids play a critical role in pathogenesis of ACS and reduction of lipid parameters plays a pivotal role in secondary prevention. High total cholesterol and high low-density lipoprotein(LDL) are the major lipid abnormalities globally as well as in Indians.
