Article Synopsis
  • There is a noted gap in research regarding the effectiveness of aspirin alone for preventing symptomatic venous thromboembolism (VTE) following total hip or knee surgeries, prompting this study.
  • The objective was to compare the effectiveness of aspirin versus enoxaparin in reducing instances of symptomatic VTE after these surgeries, using a large cluster-randomized trial involving over 9,700 patients in Australia.
  • The study found that the trial was stopped early after interim results indicated that aspirin was noninferior to enoxaparin in preventing VTE, with a focus on patient outcomes such as pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis, and other complications within 90 days post-surgery.

High resolution human leukocyte antigen (HLA) typing is important in establishing eplet compatibility and the specificity of donor-specific anti-HLA antibodies (DSA). In deceased donor kidney transplantation, high resolution donor HLA typing may not be immediately available, leading to inaccuracies during the organ allocation process. We aimed to determine the concordance and agreement of HLA-Class I and II eplet mismatches calculated using population frequency based allelic haplotype association (linkage disequilibrium, LD) from sequence-specific oligonucleotide (SSO) and real-time polymerase chain reaction (rtPCR) donor HLA typing (available at time of donor kidney allocation) compared to high-resolution Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) donor typing.

Avoiding Toxicity With Lung Radiation Therapy: An IASLC Perspective.

J Thorac Oncol

August 2022

Department of Radiation Oncology, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, Melbourne, Australia; Sir Peter MacCallum Department of Oncology, University of Melbourne, Melbourne, Australia.

Toxicity concerns from thoracic radiation therapy in the treatment of lung cancers have changed substantially over the past few decades. Survival in the treatment of lung cancer has markedly improved and the introduction of advanced radiation and imaging techniques to treatment planning and delivery has made reducing toxicity possible. Phase 3 dose-escalation trials have revealed that excess dose to critical organs within the thorax can negatively impact overall survival.

Matched linac stereotactic radiotherapy: An assessment of delivery similarity and distributive patient-specific quality assurance feasibility.

J Appl Clin Med Phys

November 2022

School of Physics, Mathematics, and Computing, Faculty of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences, University of Western Australia, Crawley, Western Australia, Australia.

Matching multiple linacs to common baseline data allows patients to be treated, and patient-specific quality assurance (PSQA) to be completed on any linac. Stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) requires higher levels of accuracy and quality assurance than routine radiotherapy. The achieved linac matching must therefore be evaluated before distributive treatment or PSQA models can be implemented safely.

J Appl Clin Med Phys

December 2020

School of Physics, Mathematics, and Computing, Faculty of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences, University of Western Australia, Crawley, WA, Australia.

Monte Carlo (MC)-based treatment planning requires a choice of dose voxel size (DVS) and statistical uncertainty (SU). These parameters effect both the precision of displayed dose distribution and time taken to complete a calculation. For efficient, accurate, and precise treatment planning in a clinical setting, optimal values should be selected.
