Background: Factors associated with severe COVID-19 infection have been identified; however, the impact of infection on longer-term outcomes is unclear. The objective of this study was to examine the impact of COVID-19 infection on the trajectory of lung function and nutritional status in people with cystic fibrosis (pwCF).

Methods: This is a retrospective global cohort study of pwCF who had confirmed COVID-19 infection diagnosed between January 1, 2020 and December 31, 2021.

Integrated gut metabolome and microbiome fingerprinting reveals that dysbiosis precedes allergic inflammation in IgE-mediated pediatric cow's milk allergy.

Allergy

April 2024

Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Translational Physiology, Infectiology and Public Health, Laboratory of Integrative Metabolomics (LIMET), Ghent University, Merelbeke, Belgium.

Background: IgE-mediated cow's milk allergy (IgE-CMA) is one of the first allergies to arise in early childhood and may result from exposure to various milk allergens, of which β-lactoglobulin (BLG) and casein are the most important. Understanding the underlying mechanisms behind IgE-CMA is imperative for the discovery of novel biomarkers and the design of innovative treatment and prevention strategies.

Methods: We report a longitudinal in vivo murine model, in which two mice strains (BALB/c and C57Bl/6) were sensitized to BLG using either cholera toxin or an oil emulsion (n = 6 per group).

Background: Head-to-head comparator trials between first-line oral migraine preventatives and the new monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) blocking the calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) pathway have not been published to date.

Objectives: This study aimed to indirectly compare the clinical efficacy and safety of mAbs against CGRP or its receptor (CGRPR) and topiramate in episodic migraine prophylaxis using meta-analysis.

Methods: We included controlled trials testing efficacy and safety of erenumab, galcanezumab, fremanezumab, eptinezumab, and topiramate in adults diagnosed with episodic migraine.

Background: The English version of the FACE-Q rhinoplasty module, developed according to Rasch measurement theory, has recently been translated into Dutch. Before conclusions can be drawn from the Dutch version, this translation must also fit the item analysis by the Rasch model.

Objectives: The primary aim of this study was to evaluate cross-cultural equivalence between the Dutch and English versions of the FACE-Q rhinoplasty module by applying Rasch methodology.

Aneuploidy mosaicism involving two complementary different autosomal trisomy cell lines is extremely rare. Although a mosaic double trisomy 8/trisomy 21 has been described in literature, this is the first report of Warkany (+8)-Down (+21) syndrome due to two complementary mosaic trisomy cell lines. The phenotype of the male patient with Warkany-Down syndrome includes upslanting palpebral fissures, hypertelorism, small low-set ears with unilateral aural stenosis, large and broad hands and feet with deep palmar and plantar creases, bilateral cryptorchidism, generalized mild hypotonia and transient neonatal thrombocytopenia.

Varicella zoster virus (VZV) typically causes chickenpox upon primary infection. In rare cases, VZV can give rise to life-threatening disease in otherwise healthy people, but the immunological basis for this remains unexplained. We report 4 cases of acute severe VZV infection affecting the central nervous system or the lungs in unrelated, otherwise healthy children who are heterozygous for rare missense mutations in POLR3A (one patient), POLR3C (one patient), or both (two patients).

Background: Visceral artery pseudoaneurysms are relatively rare but have a high mortality rate in case of rupture. Their detection in the last decades is rising due to an increased use of computed tomography and angiography. However, due to the nonspecific nature of the clinical symptoms and signs, diagnosis is often delayed or missed.

We measured acceleromyography and mechanomyography simultaneously with monitoring of rocuronium-induced neuromuscular block in four patients with myotonic dystrophy type 1. Furthermore, we compared neuromuscular block measures from these patients with those from normal controls from previous studies. In myotonic dystrophy type 1 patients, the dose-response curve obtained with acceleromyography was steeper and right-shifted compared with that obtained using mechanomyography.

Necrolytic migratory erythema: first symptom of a glucagonoma. A case report.

Acta Chir Belg

August 2004

Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, Sint Vincentius Hospital, Antwerpen, Belgium.

Necrolytic migratory erythema (NME) is a rare skin condition consisting of migrating areas of erythema with blisters that heal with hyperpigmentation. NME is a pathognomonic feature of a glucagonoma. When confronted with a xerosis cutis one should always exclude the possibility of a NME caused by a glucagonoma as demonstrated in this case report where the rash was wrongly attributed to an acrodermatitis enteropathica due to zinc deficiency.

Systemic mastocytosis, an unusual cause of osteoporosis.

Clin Rheumatol

September 1987

Department of Internal Medicine, Sint-Vincentius Hospital, Antwerp, Belgium.

A 45-year-old patient is described presenting with severe axial osteoporosis. This diagnosis was confirmed by measurement of urinary histamine metabolites and by bone biopsy showing increased numbers of mast cells and fibroblast-like cells.
