Metal-free carbon-based materials have gained recognition as potential electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in new environmentally-friendly electrochemical energy conversion technologies. The presence of effective active centers is crucial for achieving productive ORR. In this study, we present the synthesis of two metal-free dibenzo[a,c]phenazine-based covalent organic frameworks (DBP-COFs), specifically JUC-650 and JUC-651, which serve as ORR electrocatalysts.

Complexes of Ni(II) with a series of aryl or alkyl substituent dithiophosphinic acids were characterized by crystallographic structure, sulfur K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and density functional theory (DFT). In these complexes, Ni(II) coordinates with four sulfur atoms from two dithiophosphinate anions form a well-defined square-planar structure. Despite the minor differences in the geometry parameters among the complexes, the electronic structure is affected significantly by the substituent group attached to dithiophosphinic acid.

The unsuitable disposal of plastic wastes has caused serious environmental pollution, and finding a green manner to address this problem has aroused wide concern. Plastic wastes, especially polyolefin wastes, are rich in carbon and hydrogen, and chemical recycling shows distinct advantages in their conversion into olefins and realizes a closed-loop cycling of plastic wastes. Plastic wastes should be labeled before disposal.

The development of membranes for protein purification has stringent requirement of disinfection resistance, low protein adsorption and anti-fouling, without changing protein structure. In this study, hydrophilic titanium dioxide (TiO)/calcium alginate (TiO/CaAlg) hydrogel membranes were prepared by a simple ionic cross-linking method. The effects of the porogenic agent polyethylene glycol (PEG) concentration, the molecular weight of PEG, and the concentration of TiO on the filtration properties were systematically investigated.

The waste tire pyrolysis oil (WTPO) has been widely concerned because it's a promising recycling method of waste tires. However, the high content of nitrogen in WTPO is unfavorable to its application. In this work, nitrogen compounds in the full distillation range of a waste tire pyrolysis oil were characterized by gas chromatograph-nitrogen chemiluminescence detector (GC-NCD), gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS).

As a new kind of modern military biological weapon, bacterial agents pose a serious threat to the public health security of human beings. Existing bacterial identification requires manual sampling and testing, which is time-consuming, and may also introduce secondary contamination or radioactive hazards during decontamination. In this paper, a non-contact, nondestructive and "green" bacterial identification and decontamination technology based on laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is proposed.

The separation of Co(II) and Ni(II) from leaching solution is gaining interest because Co(II) and Ni(II) are increasingly used in emerging strategic areas, such as power batteries. Herein, the surface of silica gel is functionalized with 1,2-ethylenediamine and used for the separation of Co(II) and Ni(II). The Co(II) removal efficiency of the modified silica is 80.

Proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is one of the most promising energy conversion devices with high efficiency and zero emission. However, oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the cathode is still the dominant limiting factor for the practical development of PEMFC due to its sluggish kinetics and the vulnerability of ORR catalysts under harsh operating conditions. Thus, the development of high-performance ORR catalysts is essential and requires a better understanding of the underlying ORR mechanism and the failure mechanisms of ORR catalysts with in situ characterization techniques.

Heat accumulation generated from confined space poses a threat to the service reliability and lifetime of electronic devices. To quickly remove the excess heat from the hot spot, it is highly desirable to enhance the heat dissipation in a specific direction. Herein, we report a facile route to fabricate the large-scale composite film with enhanced thermal conductivity and electrical insulation.

Based on the characteristics of typical C aromatics in naphtha fractions, the effects of key process parameters and heavy aromatic composition on product distribution of fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) of heavy aromatics (HAs) were investigated. The results show that catalysts with large pore size and strong acid sites are favorable for the conversion of HAs to benzene-toluene-xylene (BTX) at higher reaction temperatures and moderate catalyst-oil ratios (C/O). With a Y zeolite-based catalyst which was hydrothermally pretreated for 4 h, the conversion of Feed 1 at 600 °C and C/O of 10 may reach 64.

Calorific value is an important indicator to evaluate the comprehensive quality of coal, and its real-time and rapid analysis is of great significance for optimizing the coal blending process and improving boiler combustion efficiency. Traditional assays are time-consuming, and prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) have certain limitations. In this paper, a novel technique for ultra-repeatability measurement of coal calorific value by combining near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) is proposed.

Solar-driven conversion of carbon dioxide (CO) without sacrificial agents offers an attractive alternative in sustainable energy research; nevertheless, it is often retarded by the sluggish water oxidation kinetics and severe charge recombination. To this end, a Z-scheme iron oxyhydroxide/polymeric carbon nitride (FeOOH/PCN) heterojunction, as identified by quasi X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, is constructed. In this heterostructure, the two-dimensional FeOOH nanorod provides rich coordinatively unsaturated sites and highly oxidative photoinduced holes to boost the sluggish water decomposition kinetics.

The alternative flame retardants, novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) and organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) are ubiquitous in the environment and biota and may induce endocrine disruption effects. Associations between traditional endocrine-disrupting chemicals and type 2 diabetes have been extensively reported in epidemiological studies. However, the effects of NBFRs and OPFRs in humans have not been reported to date.

Copper-loaded ceria (Cu/CeO) catalysts have become promising for the catalytic oxidation of industrial CO emissions. Since their superior redox property mainly arises from the synergistic effect between Cu and the CeO support, the dispersion state of Cu species may dominate the catalytic performance of Cu/CeO catalysts: the extremely high or low dispersity is disadvantageous for the catalytic performance. The nanoparticle catalysts usually present few contact sites, while the single-atom catalysts tend to be passivated due to their relatively single valence state.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been paid more attention as liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs) because of their high hydrogen storage, easy transportation, low price, and other advantages. Dehydrogenation is the key point of the PAH hydrogen storage. However, the dehydrogenation reaction rate of perhydro-PAHs is slow, and their pathway is still not clear.

Electrocatalytic water splitting in an alkaline medium is recognized as the promising technology to sustainably generate clean hydrogen energy via hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), while the sluggish water dissociation and subsequent *H adsorption steps greatly retarded the reaction kinetics and efficiency of the overall hydrogen evolution process. Whilst nitrogen (N)-doped carbon-based materials are attractive candidates for promoting HER activity, the facile fabrication and gaining a deeper insight into the electrocatalytic mechanism are still challenging. Herein, inspired by the Diels-Alder reaction, we precisely tailored six-membered pyridinic N and five-membered pyrrolic N sites at the edge of the carbon substrates.
