Plus disease was first defined in the original International Classification of retinopathy of prematurity (ICROP) publication in 1984. Over time, the definition of plus disease has evolved, and each ensuing ICROP publication has included example plus disease images. Because plus disease is often present when treatment is indicated, it is important to evaluate whether the retinal vascular characteristics (ie, dilation and tortuosity) depicted in these example images have remained the same or changed over time.

Background: An increasing number of multicomponent workplace interventions are being developed to reduce sedentary time and promote physical activity among office workers. The Physical Activity at Work (PAW) trial was one of these interventions, but it yielded an inconclusive effect on sedentary time after 6 months, with a low uptake of movement breaks, the main intervention component.
Objective: This study investigates the factors contributing to the outcomes of the PAW cluster randomized trial.

Introduction: Clinical medicine is becoming more complex and increasingly requires a team-based approach to deliver healthcare needs. This dispersion of cognitive reasoning across individuals, teams and systems (termed "distributed cognition") means that our understanding of cognitive biases and errors must expand beyond traditional "in-the-head" individual mental models and focus on a broader "out-in-the-world" context instead. To our knowledge, no qualitative studies thus far have examined cognitive biases in clinical settings from a team-based sociocultural perspective.

Enzyme-catalyzed protein modifications have become invaluable in diverse applications, outperforming chemical methods in terms of precision, conjugation efficiency, and biological compatibility. Despite significant advances in ligases, such as sortase A and OaAEP1, their use in heterogeneous biological environments remains constrained by limited target sequence specificity. In 2021, Lupas' group introduced Connectase, a family of repurposed archaeal proteases for protein ligations, but its low processivity and lack of structural information have impeded further engineering for practical biological and biophysical applications.

Synthetic C-glycosides play a crucial role in molecular biology and medicine. With the surge of interest in C-glycosides and the demand to provide efforts with sufficient feedstock, it is highly significant to pursue novel methodologies to access C-glycosides in a concise and efficient manner. Here, we disclose an attractive strategy that diverges itself from conventional multistep reaction sequences involving the manipulations of protecting groups.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) presents a substantial clinical challenge due to the limited understanding of its genetic underpinnings. Here we conduct the largest scale whole-exome sequencing association study of NPC to date, encompassing 6,969 NPC cases and 7,100 controls. We unveil 3 germline genetic variants linked to NPC susceptibility: a common rs2276868 in RPL14, a rare rs5361 in SELE, and a common rs1050462 in HLA-B.

Norovirus (NoV) infection is a leading cause of gastroenteritis and poses global health threats, with increasing incidence reported in immunocompromised individuals, which is further exacerbated by the globalization of the food industry. Eumelanin has demonstrated its potential in antiviral treatments, but its role in preventing viral infections remains underexplored. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the antiviral properties and potential mechanisms of self-assembled eumelanin nanoparticles (EmNPs) against Tulane virus (TuV), a surrogate with a similar infection mechanism to NoVs.

Donor-specific antibodies (DSAs) targeting mismatched human leukocyte antigen (HLA) molecules are one of the principal threats to long-term graft survival in solid organ transplantation. However, many patients with long-term circulating DSAs do not manifest rejection responses, suggesting a degree of heterogeneity in their pathogenicity and related functional activity. Immunologic risk stratification of transplant recipients is complicated by challenges intrinsic to defining alloantibody responses that are potentially pathogenic versus those that are not.

Introduction: Flower color polymorphism is often attributed to selection pressures from Q9 pollinators or other non-pollinator stress factors. Generally, flower color polymorphism demonstrates effective acclimatization linked to either pollinator-mediated selection or pleiotropic effects.
Methods: To test these hypotheses in Ophiorrhiza japonica, we compared pollinator visitation frequencies and plant traits between pink and white morphs in Shibing, a dolomite Karst region recognized as a World Natural Heritage Site.

Low-dimensional lead-free metal halide perovskites are highly attractive for cutting-edge optoelectronic applications. Herein, we report a class of scandium-based double perovskite crystals comprising antimony dopants that can generate multiexcitonic emissions in the ultraviolet, blue, and yellow spectral regions. Owing to the zero-dimensional nature of the crystal lattice that minimizes energy crosstalk, different excitonic states in the crystals can be selectively excited by ultraviolet light, X-ray irradiation, and mechanical action, enabling dynamic control of steady/transient-state spectral features by modulating the excitation modes.

Stem cells reside in specialized microenvironments, termed niches, at several different locations in tissues. The differential functions of heterogeneous stem cells and niches are important given the increasing clinical applications of stem-cell transplantation and immunotherapy. Whether hierarchical structures among stem cells at distinct niches exist and further control aspects of immune tolerance is unknown.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, systemic inflammatory disease affecting a significant portion of the global population. Despite advancements in pharmacological treatments, the management of RA remains complex, particularly in regard to comorbidities such as cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis. Physiotherapy (PT) and occupational therapy (OT) are non-pharmacological approaches that play a critical role in the management of RA.

Treatment-free survival (TFS) is an important measure for this period, but no data are available for patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) starting first-line agents. Our aim was to analyze TFS outcomes for patients with mRCC starting first-line therapy.

Previous research has found functional connectivity in various networks to be altered in psychopathy and has theorised a link between these networks and the self-control-related deficits observed in psychopathy. However, this theory has yet to be tested adequately and empirically. The present study investigated the association between psychopathy, self-control, and intrinsic functional connectivity in 179 healthy adults from the MPI Leipzig Mind Brain Body dataset.

The hydraulic conditions vary significantly across different segments of the drinking water distribution system (DWDS), leading to distinct variations in water quality throughout the system. Understanding these changes in water quality and biofilm development over time is crucial for enhancing drinking water management efficiency. This study focused on replicating the hydraulic conditions found in transmission and distribution pipelines within a specific pipeline path of the DWDS in Singapore using a biofilm annular reactor series system (BARSS).

Electrochemical oxidation stands as a pivotal technology for refractory wastewater treatment. However, the high cost and low elemental abundance of commercial electrodes limit its widespread application. This work tries to address this by introducing a charge-transfer rerouting strategy via cocatalyst modification using earth-abundant elements.

Acute Q fever diagnosis via paired serology is problematic because it requires follow-up for convalescent sample collection; as such, it cannot provide a diagnosis to inform a treatment decision at the time of acute presentation. Real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) may be a useful approach for the diagnosis of acute Q fever in endemic settings. Among febrile patients enrolled in a sentinel surveillance study for Q fever at two referral hospitals in Moshi, Tanzania, from 2012 to 2014, we analyzed those with paired sera for IgG to Coxiella burnetii (C.
