Article Synopsis
  • - Ureteral stents are commonly used after ureteroscopy to prevent complications from kidney stones, yet they can cause significant pain and urinary issues, which has led to calls for their omission in many cases.
  • - Guidelines support not using stents in uncomplicated surgeries, but over 80% of procedures still involve them, partly due to insufficient evidence about their impact on pain and patient outcomes.
  • - A new study is being conducted where patients randomly choose whether to have a stent or not, while those who refuse randomization will be observed based on the doctor's decision, aiming to gather real-world data on the effectiveness of stent omission.

Non-cancer-related risk factors for secondary lymphedema were defined across four categories: co-morbidity, social determinants of health, behavioral factors, and environmental effectors. Based on rapid reviews of the literature and presentations at the ACS/LANA Lymphedema Summit, this working group categorized these risk factors according to the strength of evidence. Consensus agreement on level of evidence was achieved through one face-to-face working session and three follow-up virtual meetings.

The Southern United States (US) bears the highest burden of HIV prevalence in the country, disproportionately affecting African American communities. Despite the proven efficacy of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in reducing HIV transmission, its uptake remains suboptimal in this region. This study aimed to identify factors influencing PrEP-prescribing behaviors among primary care providers (PCPs) in the Southern US through the application of the transtheoretical model of behavior change.

Translating evidence-based practice (EBP) into real-world clinical settings often takes a considerable amount of time and resources. In allergy and immunology, the dissemination and implementation (D&I) sciences facilitate the study of how variations in knowledge, resources, patient populations, and staffing models lead to differences in the clinical care of asthma, allergic disease, and primary immunodeficiency. Despite the need for validated approaches to study how to best apply EBP in the real world, the D&I sciences are underutilized.

  • We did a study to understand why some doctors overuse ADT and how to stop it, using different theories and surveys to gather information from urologists.
  • From our survey, we found that some doctors are less likely to stop giving ADT unnecessarily, and that better communication and teamwork might help reduce its overuse.
