Purpose: To determine the accuracy of nursing diagnoses at hospital admission and discharge for patients with heart failure (HF).

Methods: This comparative study examined the documentation in 155 medical records of patients with an admitting diagnosis of HF during August 2018 and July 2019. An audit tool was used to record the diagnoses made by nurses during routine care at the time of admission and discharge.

Objectives: Both alcohol use and the prevalence of depression-depressive disorders, among older adults have increased over the past several decades and have been associated with increased morbidity and mortality. To our knowledge, the interactions between retirement, depression, and alcohol use have not yet been examined. This study aims to longitudinally explore the mediating role of alcohol use on the association between retirement and depressive symptoms in the United States, comparing individuals who are retired and not retired, while also exploring individuals who transitioned into and out of retirement at different times.

Unlabelled: One of the most critical intervention strategies when working with individuals with significant language delays associated with autism spectrum disorder and related developmental delays is teaching mands. For mand training to be effective, an establishing operation (EO) must be in effect, yet EOs are often difficult to observe. Before learning to mand, an individual may point to or approach a reinforcer, which likely indicates an EO related to that reinforcer, and may be considered an indicating response (IR).

Unlabelled: Mands are consistently described as critical learning targets for members of vulnerable populations in need of language intervention (Ala'i-Rosales et al., 2018; Michael, 1988; Sundberg, 2004). Reviews of the literature demonstrate a prevalence of the mand in the applied literature (e.

Social media use has become a growing concern and an emerging public health crisis, with an increasing body of research suggesting adverse effects on the psychological, social, and mental well-being of its users. We evaluated the effectiveness of a technology-based self-management intervention consisting of self-monitoring and delays in a college student's daily social media use. Results showed a reduction of social media use to zero and near-zero levels and maintenance up to 30 days postintervention.

Background: Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent environmental contaminants previously used for industrial purposes as a non-stick coating and flame retardant. The stability of these molecules prevents their breakdown, which results in ground water contamination across the globe. Perfluoroalkyl substances molecules are known to bioaccumulate in various organisms.

The Perceived Effectiveness of Cannabidiol on Adult Women with Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Medicina (Kaunas)

December 2024

Department of Nutrition, College of Natural, Behavioral and Health Sciences, Simmons University, Boston, MA 02115, USA.

: In this study we analyzed the perceived effectiveness of cannabidiol (CBD) in adult women with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). : We conducted an online cross-sectional survey which assessed disease severity and quality of life (QOL) in women with IBD (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis) who used CBD versus those who did not. The survey included: the Harvey-Bradshaw Index, Partial Mayo Score, Short Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire, Bristol Stool Scale, and the Prime Screen Short Food Frequency Questionnaire.

Background: Eliminating HIV vertical transmission (VT) and is a global priority. Estimates of paediatric HIV infections are commonly derived through mathematical models relying on rates of VT stratified by maternal immunological and treatment status from literature, namely the UNAIDS-supported Spectrum AIDS Impact Module (Spectrum-AIM) to assess progress towards eliminating VT. Default VT probabilities were last updated in 2018, since then there have been substantial changes to service delivery and ART regimens.

Differential Effects of Prenatal Buprenorphine and Methadone on Postnatal Growth and Gene Expression in the Nucleus Accumbens.

Dev Psychobiol

January 2025

Department of Comparative Pathobiology, Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, Tufts University, North Grafton, Massachusetts, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • Methadone and buprenorphine are used during pregnancy to help women with opioid use disorder, but babies exposed to these medications may experience neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS), affecting their feeding behavior.
  • A study involving pregnant female rats showed that offspring exposed to either drug had lower weights compared to those given saline, with buprenorphine offspring maintaining lower weights longer than those exposed to methadone.
  • Gene expression analysis indicated that while both drugs had similar effects, methadone-exposed offspring exhibited significantly reduced levels of the gene proopiomelanocortin (Pomc), suggesting different developmental impacts between the two medications.

To facilitate investigations of the microtubule severing protein spastin and its specific role in neurons, we aimed to create a strain in which the spastin homolog SPAS-1 is visible and can be degraded with spatial and temporal precision. We used CRISPR-Cas9 to fuse an auxin-inducible degron and mScarlet to the endogenous SPAS-1 protein, enabling degradation of SPAS-1 in neurons during desired life stages. DNA sequencing confirmed in-frame insertion with the SPAS-1 N-terminus and fluorescence microscopy revealed endogenous SPAS-1 throughout the CRISPR-edited worms.

MalKinID: A Classification Model for Identifying Malaria Parasite Genealogical Relationships Using Identity-by-Descent.

Genetics

November 2024

Department of Immunology and Infectious Diseases, Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health, Harvard University, Boston, MA, 02115, USA.

Pathogen genomics is a powerful tool for tracking infectious disease transmission. In malaria, identity-by-descent (IBD) is used to assess the genetic relatedness between parasites and has been used to study transmission and importation. In theory, IBD can be used to distinguish genealogical relationships to reconstruct transmission history or identify parasites for quantitative-trait-locus experiments.

Dietary Pattern, Sputum DNA Methylation, and Lung Health: An Epidemiological Study in People Who Ever Smoked.

Chest

November 2024

Comprehensive Cancer Center, University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, NM; Department of Internal Medicine, University of New Mexico School of Medicine, Albuquerque, NM; Lung Cancer Program, Lovelace Biomedical Research Institute, Albuquerque, NM. Electronic address:

Background: We previously identified a panel of sputum DNA methylation that predicts lung aging and risk for lung cancer.

Research Question: Can the sputum methylation panel be used as a readout to derive a dietary pattern beneficial for lung health? Is this dietary pattern associated with various subjective and objective lung health phenotypes? Does this relationship vary among people who currently smoke (current smokers) vs previously smoked (former smokers)?

Study Design And Methods: Using the Lovelace Smoker Cohort (LSC), we employed the LASSO (least absolute shrinkage and selection operator) regularized Poisson regression to define a dietary pattern for sputum. Associations of the dietary pattern with objective and subjective lung health measurements were examined using generalized linear and Cox models in the LSC and the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer Screening trial.
