Pan Afr Med J

February 2023

Department of Surgery, Urology Division, Faculty of Medicine, Public Health and Nursing, Gadjah Mada University, Jogjakarta, Indonesia.

Retrieving these forgotten encrusted double j (DJ) stents could be challenging and require multimodal urological interventions, especially in a single-functioning transplanted kidney. Only a few cases of mini-percutaneous nephrolithotomy (mini-PCNL) via ultrasonography (US) guidance in transplanted kidneys have been published. We report a 47-year-old man; a case of a transplanted kidney, with a complaint of abdominal pain and dysuria for two weeks.

Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 is a highly transmissible and pathogenic viral infection caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, a novel coronavirus that was identified in early January 2020 in Wuhan, China, and has become a pandemic disease worldwide. The symptoms of coronavirus disease 2019 range from asymptomatic to severe respiratory failure. In moderate and severe cases, oxygen therapy is needed.

Background: Peritoneal adhesion still becoming a common complication after abdominal surgeries and become a significant threat to digestive surgeons nowadays. Vitamin E might offer benefits for preventing peritoneal adhesions because of its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-fibroblastic properties. This study sought to analyze the relationship between vitamin E administration and peritoneal/intra-abdominal adhesions in rat models.

Introduction: Trauma to the extremities is a common major health problem that requires special attention because it can have a dangerous impact on both the viability of the limb and the patient's life. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is an alternative therapy hypothesized to improve the prognosis in lower extremity trauma.

Case Presentation: We present a series of 7 cases of lower extremity trauma treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy: soft tissue loss, neglected chronic burn injury, high-voltage electrical burn, gas gangrene, crush injury, chemical burn, and excoriation with skin loss.

Background: Endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) is a procedure that involves devising an opening in the third ventricle floor, allowing cerebrospinal fluid to flow into the prepontine cistern and the subarachnoid space. Third ventricular floor bowing (TVFB) serves as an indicator of intraventricular obstruction in hydrocephalus and existence of pressure gradient across third ventricular floor, which is the prerequisite of a successful ETV.

Objective: In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we aimed to synthesize the latest evidence on the TVFB as a marker for surgical success in patients undergoing ETV.

Article Synopsis
  • The review found a significant link between pre-pregnancy obesity and the incidence of Peripartum Cardiomyopathy (PPCM), with obese participants having nearly 1.8 times the risk compared to those of normal weight.
  • The study included over 5.3 million participants, highlighting the substantial scale of the analysis.
  • Additionally, women with higher obesity classes (II and III) faced an even greater risk, suggesting that the severity of obesity plays a critical role in PPCM incidence.

Heparin in the treatment of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Neurosurg Focus

March 2022

2Department of Neurosurgery, Neuroscience Centre Siloam Hospital, Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Pelita Harapan, Tangerang, Banten, Indonesia.

Objective: Cerebral vasospasm and the resulting infarction remain the most devastating complications of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). Limited treatment options are available, with nimodipine as the only approved prophylactic medication. In addition to its anticoagulant properties, heparin also has a pleiotropic and anti-inflammatory effect that could be beneficial in vasospasm.

Background And Purpose: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) primarily attacks the respiratory system, but there are also several reports of the involvement of the central nervous system, with one of the manifestations being encephalopathy. The relatively new emergence of COVID-19 means that few studies have investigated the clinical profile of encephalopathy associated with this disease. This study aimed to determine the clinical profile, laboratory, and imaging results of encephalopathy associated with COVID-19.

Article Synopsis
  • Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) aids in urological wound healing by reducing inflammation, promoting blood vessel growth, and enhancing immune response.
  • A case series involving eight patients demonstrated successful outcomes after various reconstructive surgeries supplemented with HBOT, including treatments for silicone fluid injections, hypospadias, and Fournier's gangrene.
  • The study concludes that HBOT significantly enhances wound healing and graft integration in reconstructive urology cases.

Introduction: The surgical removal of an intraoral tumor and preventing intraoral wound dehiscence are constant challenges faced by surgeons today. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), the inhalation of 100% oxygen at a greater atmospheric pressure, is often used in cases of wounds to induce a faster wound healing process, alongside other treatment modalities. We report a rare case of squamous odontogenic tumor (SOT) treated with HBOT after being surgically removed to foster an accelerated wound recovery.

Background: The scalpel was once the gold standard for surgical incisions. Electrosurgery has started to supplant scalpels but is not yet acceptable for skin incisions due to the risk of burns and deeper injury relative to the scalpels' neat incision with less tissue damage. The unnecessary burden of excessive scar formation makes comparing these two methods challenging.

Piriformis syndrome (PS) is a neuromuscular condition caused by the entrapment of the sciatic nerve at the level of the piriformis muscle (PM). Diagnosing PS remains challenging despite recent invasive and non-invasive diagnostic methods. Response to invasive nerve block is still one of the most reliable diagnostic modalities because there is no gold standard test for PS.

Background: The use of regular blood transfusions and iron chelation therapy to treat thalassemia has improved survival and increased the incidence of osteoporosis. Moreover, iron toxicity is one of the contributing factors that reduce bone mass density in adult transfusion-dependent beta-thalassemia patients. Therefore, this study aims to determine the proportion of low bone mass density in adult thalassemia patients and transferrin saturation, as well as serum ferritin, which correlates to the skeletal condition.

Introduction: Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), a procedure that involves the patient inhaling 100% oxygen gas under pressure, is currently used as an adjunctive treatment option for certain inflammatory conditions. HBOT can improve wound healing by increasing the rate of angiogenesis in injured tissue by increasing levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). VEGF causes re-epithelialization, the migration of endothelial cells, and the formation of granulation tissue, which are involved in the wound healing process.

Expanding pneumocephalus due to craniofacial fractures: A case report.

Int J Surg Case Rep

September 2021

Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, Hasanuddin University, Makassar, Indonesia. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Pneumocephalus (PNC) is the presence of air in the skull, primarily caused by head injuries or surgery, leading to characteristic imaging findings like the "Mount Fuji sign."
  • A case study of a 57-year-old man showed that he developed severe PNC after a motorcycle accident, requiring surgical intervention to drain the air and repair cranial defects, ultimately improving his symptoms.
  • The study emphasizes the challenge of diagnosing PNC, as it can be subtle at first, and endorses the use of pericranial flaps for effective surgical repair with lower infection rates compared to synthetic options.
