Ann Gastroenterol

December 2024

Division of Gastroenterology, Pancreatobiliary and Digestive Endoscopy, Department of Internal Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Indonesia, Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital, Jakarta (Marcellus Simadibrata), Indonesia.

Background: The impairment of gastrointestinal mucosa visibility during esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), due to the presence of foam and bubbles, may lead to reduced quality in the EGD results. The combination of simethicone, a defoaming agent, along with N-acetylcysteine (NAC), which has mucolytic properties, has been proposed to improve the visibility of the mucosa. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of pre-procedural administration of simethicone and N-acetylcysteine in improving mucosal visibility, procedure time and mucosal cleansing volume needed during EGD.

We present a unique case of mixed ovarian carcinoma, including both clear cell carcinoma (CCC) and grade 1 endometrioid carcinoma (EC) in a 49-year-old woman. The patient had no complaints of pain but presented with an enlarged abdomen, necessitating a thorough diagnostic assessment. Histopathological evaluation revealed an unusual histological juxtaposition of CCC coexisting with grade 1 EC found in an ovarian mass, resulting in diagnostic and therapeutic challenges.

Background: Meniscus injuries are familiar sources of knee pain, with meniscus repair sometimes yielding unsatisfactory results. Microfracture is a standard procedure for treating articular cartilage damage in the knee that promotes the formation of fibrocartilage over damaged cartilage. Microfracture enhanced the healing rate of meniscus repair in animal models.

Lumbar spine MRI annotation with intervertebral disc height and Pfirrmann grade predictions.

PLoS One

May 2024

School of Computing, Engineering and Digital Technologies, Teesside University, Middlesbrough, United Kingdom.

Many lumbar spine diseases are caused by defects or degeneration of lumbar intervertebral discs (IVD) and are usually diagnosed through inspection of the patient's lumbar spine MRI. Efficient and accurate assessments of the lumbar spine are essential but a challenge due to the size of the clinical radiologist workforce not keeping pace with the demand for radiology services. In this paper, we present a methodology to automatically annotate lumbar spine IVDs with their height and degenerative state which is quantified using the Pfirrmann grading system.
