The Empowerment of Adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes Is Associated with Their Executive Functions.

Biomed Res Int

December 2019

Department of Pediatrics, Endocrinology, Diabetology with Cardiology Division, Medical University of Białystok, Białystok 15-274 Waszyngtona 24, Poland.

Background: Adolescence is a difficult period for young people with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), both in psychological and clinical terms. Empowerment therapy may support these patients, provided they are ready to change and have adequate executive functions to facilitate this change. Therefore, we hypothesise that the readiness of adolescents with T1DM to change is related to clinical features and/or their executive functions.

Unlabelled: Skin melanomas rank among the malignant neoplasms that have the greatest dynamics of growth and number of incidents. Early identification of primary lesions and metastases in regional lymph nodes, possible due to location, creates a chance for complete recovery.

Case Report: The study presents a positive result of treatment in case of a 67-year old woman patient, with diagnosed malignant melanoma in the lateral ankle area in the right lower extremity.

Introduction: Since little has been known about the effect of the central noradrenergic system on the reactivity of serotonin 5-HT3 receptors, the aim of the current study was to find out whether this reactivity could be altered by chemical damage to the system in adult rats in early developmental stage.

Materials And Methods: Adult male Wistar rats with central noradrenergic lesion induced by DSP-4 on day 1 and 3 of life were injected with analgesic model substance - morphine, serotoninergic 5-HT3 receptor agonist (1-phenylbiguanide, PBG), 5-HT3 receptor antagonist (ondansetron) or both compounds jointly followed by decarboxylase inhibitor of aromatic amino acids (NSD-1050). After 30 min following NSD-1050 injection, the animals were decapitated using a guillotine.

Genetic variability of GCKR alters lipid profiles in children with monogenic and autoimmune diabetes.

Exp Clin Endocrinol Diabetes

October 2014

Department of Pediatrics, Oncology, Hematology and Diabetology, Medical University of Lodz, Poland.

Purpose: Mutations in the glucokinase (GCK) gene are associated with altered blood glucose and lipid concentrations. Our aim was to assess the effects on HbA1c and serum lipid levels of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 2 genes encoding proteins that interact with glucokinase: glucose-6-phospatase catalytic subunit 2 (G6PC2) and glucokinase regulatory protein (GCKR).

Methods: The study group included 129 children with GCK-MODY from the Polish Registry of Monogenic Diabetes and 395 with type 1 diabetes (T1DM), in whom we genotyped 2 SNPs in G6PC2 (rs560887) and GCKR (rs1260326).

Copeptin: a new marker in cardiology.

J Cardiovasc Med (Hagerstown)

January 2013

Second Department of Cardiology, Silesian Medical University of Katowice, Katowice, Poland.

Copeptin, the C-terminal part of the prohormone of vasopressin (AVP), is released together with AVP in stoichiometric concentrations reflecting an individual's stress level. Copeptin has come to be regarded as an important marker for identifying high-risk patients and predicting outcomes in a variety of diseases. It improves the clinical value of commonly used biomarkers and the tools of risk stratification.

October 2012

Department of Paediatrics, Oncology, Haematology and Diabetology, Medical University of Lodz, 36/50 Sporna Str., 91-738, Lodz, Poland.

Aims/hypothesis: The aim of this study was to study dynamic changes in the prevalence of different types of diabetes in paediatric populations in Poland, with a specific focus on monogenic diabetes (MD).

Methods: Using epidemiologic data (PolPeDiab Collaboration) and nationwide genetic test results (TEAM Programme), we compared the prevalence of type 1, type 2 and cystic fibrosis-related diabetes (CFRD) and MD. Genetically confirmed MD included MODY, neonatal diabetes and Wolfram and Alström syndromes.

[Adrenopause].

Pol Merkur Lekarski

July 2008

Department of Internal Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology, Silesian Medical University of Katowice, Poland.

The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activity in the aging people is characterised by an unexplained reduction of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and its sulfate (DHEAS) secretion while ACTH and cortisol production remains relatively unchanged. This decline in the biological activity of the zona reticularis, referred to as 'adrenopause', may contribute to the physiology of human aging. The reduced endogenous concentrations of DHEA and DHEAS found in advancing age have been correlated with a constellation of health problems.

Progressive violence, the quickening pace of life and transport facilities' development have as a consequence an increased number of traumas. Midface fractures involving zygomatic bone fractures take one of the leading positions in the total number of traumas. It seems appropriate to study the causes and the effects of zygomatico-orbital and zygomatico-maxillo-orbital fractures managed by open reduction and rigid internal fixation at the present time of the medical service being reformed and economic rules being included in the treatment.
