Biomarkers are critical for heart failure (HF) management by facilitating risk stratification, therapeutic decision-making, and monitoring treatment response. This prospective, single-center study aimed to assess predictors of death during one-year follow-up in patients with end-stage HF, with particular emphasis on the soluble suppression of tumorigenicity 2/left ventricular mass index (sST2/LVMI) ratio, modified Model for End-stage Liver Disease (modMELD), and Model for End-stage Liver Disease excluding INR (MELD-XI). This study comprised 429 consecutive patients with end-stage HF hospitalized between 2018 and 2023.

Lipoprotein(a) as an Independent Predictor of Elevated SYNTAX Score.

J Clin Med

November 2024

Department of Cardiology, Congenital Heart Diseases and Electrotherapy, Faculty of Medical Sciences in Zabrze, Medical University of Silesia, 40-055 Katowice, Poland.

Increased lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] level is associated with elevated possibility of atherosclerosis progression. SYNTAX score enables to grade the anatomy of coronary arteries. To identify the impact of increased Lp(a) level on SYNTAX score in individuals with acute myocardial infarction (AMI).

Acromegaly in Speckle Tracking Echocardiography-A New Cardiac Hypertrophy Phenotype? Case Report and Review.

Life (Basel)

November 2024

Department of Cardiology and Electrotherapy, Silesian Center for Heart Diseases, Faculty of Medical Sciences in Zabrze, Medical University of Silesia, 40-055 Katowice, Poland.

Background: This study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) findings in patients diagnosed with acromegaly, exploring a potential application for the differential diagnosis of cardiac hypertrophy and guiding clinicians in patient management. To our knowledge, this is the first review showcasing changes in the bull's-eye pattern in myocardial function after acromegaly treatment, suggesting a possible pattern in this aetiology of left ventricular hypertrophy.

Methods: A review of PubMed articles using the search term "speckle tracking echocardiography acromegaly" yielded 11 relevant papers published between 2017 and 2023.

November 2024

Department of Cardiology and Electrotherapy, Faculty of Medical Sciences in Zabrze, Silesian Center for Heart Diseases, Medical University of Silesia, ul. Marii Curie Skłodowskiej 9, 41-800 Zabrze, Poland.

Background: We report the case of a 63-year-old white Caucasian male patient admitted to the clinic because of atypical angina and palpitations. Other comorbidities included hypertension, hyperuricaemia, and hypercholesterolaemia. He was admitted to a tertiary cardiac centre for deepened diagnostics of his complaints.

Aim Of The Study: Predictive factors for poor outcomes in hypothermic cardiac arrest (HCA) differ from those in normothermic out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). This study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of extracorporeal life support (ECLS) in HCA patients who may not be considered eligible based on the guidelines set by the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO).

Methods: A retrospective multicentre study included 127 HCA patients, divided into two groups: those meeting the ELSO eligibility criteria for ECLS, and those with at least one of the following ELSO exclusion criteria: age over 70 years, unwitnessed cardiac arrest, or asystole.

Article Synopsis
  • Sepsis is a serious condition caused by the body's extreme response to infection, impacting organ function.
  • A study assessed the effectiveness of presepsin (P-SEP) in predicting death risk in sepsis patients upon ICU admission, alongside other inflammatory markers like CRP, PCT, and IL-6.
  • Findings revealed that none of these markers, including P-SEP, were reliable indicators for predicting mortality, but higher levels were associated with positive microbiological tests for infections.

Background: Changes in the management of patients with chronic coronary syndromes (CCS) require continuous monitoring of results of treatment in daily clinical practice. The present study contains a comparison of the clinical characteristics, management, and in-hospital and five-year outcomes of patients with CCS enrolled on the Prospective REgistry of Stable AnGina management and trEatment (PRESAGE).

Methods: A group of 3475 patients with CCS were selected who underwent coronary angiography and were divided into two groups who were treated in the years 2006-2007 (1300 [37.

Introduction: Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] is an independent risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Increased Lp(a) concentration > 30 mg/dl (75 nmol/l) and especially >50 mg/dl (125 nmol/l) may cause faster atherosclerosis, being an important and underdiagnosed residual cardiovascular risk factor. Thus, there is a need to characterize further the clinical phenotypes in patients at risk for ASCVD with high Lp(a) levels now and during follow-up, while also looking for the possible impact of geographical differences.

Article Synopsis
  • Atrial fibrillation (AF) is common among patients receiving cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) and affects the effectiveness of the treatment by reducing biventricular pacing (BiVp) beats.
  • This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of rhythm control (using electrical cardioversion) versus rate control (using atrioventricular node ablation) strategies in CRT recipients suffering from persistent AF.
  • Results showed that while both strategies improved BiVp percentage similarly, only patients who restored sinus rhythm experienced a significant increase in left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), indicating the importance of maintaining normal heart rhythm in these patients.

Fibrin clot permeability (Ks) in patients on left ventricular assist device.

Sci Rep

August 2024

Department of Cardiac, Vascular and Endovascular Surgery and Transplantology, Faculty of Medical Sciences in Zabrze, Medical University of Silesia, 41-800 Zabrze, M. C. Skłodowskiej 9, 40-055, Katowice, Poland.

Article Synopsis
  • Patients on long-term left ventricular assist device (LVAD) therapy experience significant hemostasis disturbances, which may affect fibrin clot permeability.
  • A study involving 85 end-stage heart failure patients over a period of up to five years found that fibrin clot permeability decreased consistently from pre-implantation to post-implantation periods, correlating negatively with fibrinogen levels and factor VIII activity.
  • Despite these findings, no direct associations were seen with patient age or Left Ventricular Ejection Fraction (LVEF), while cumulative aspirin use was linked to shortened fibrin clot permeability and a notable occurrence of adverse cardiac and bleeding events in the patient group.

Oxidative stress reflects an imbalance between the systemic manifestation of reactive oxygen species and cells' ability to neutralize them by antioxidant systems. The role of oxidative stress in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is not fully understood. The aim of the study was to examine selected parameters of oxidative stress in patients with HCM compared to the control group.
