Objective: To establish scientific and efficient quality control standard of Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii through two quantitative parameters.
Method: The contents of isoimperatorin and volatile oils in 29 commercial samples from 22 localities of Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii were determined by HPLC and the method in the pharmacopoeia respectively. The data were statistically analyzed.
Aim: To study the protective action of ulinastatin against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced acute lung injury in mice and the mechanism of its action.
Methods: Mice were intraperitoneally injected with ulinastatin (50 and 100 ku x kg(-1)) or saline at a period of 12 h, separately, 30 min after the last injection of ulinastatin, except normal control, all mice of other groups were injected a dose of LPS 15 mg x kg(-1) via tail vein. The levels of TNFalpha in serum and lung were measured by ELISA.

Objective: To explore the preparation technology of beta-cyclodextrin inclusion compound for chuanxiong volatile oil.
Method: Orthogonal test was used to evaluate the influence of the 4 factors, including the proportion of volatile oil to beta-cyclodextrin, the mode of mixing, inclusion temperature and mixing time.
Result: The best inclusion condition is the proportion of volatile oil to beta-cyclodextrin 1:9, the mode of mixing grinding, inclusion temperature 60 degrees C and inclusion time 90 min.

Aim: To study the mechanisms of anti-diabetic nephropathy of rhein on cultured human mesangial cells (HMCs).
Methods: To mimic the hyperglycemic (HG) environment of diabetic nephropathy, 30 mmol x L(-1) glucose were added to 10% FBS RPMI 1640. The HMCs were treated with rhein for 8, 24, 48 or 72 h, at these time, the bioactivity, total activity of transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGFbeta1), activity of p38MAPK (p38 mitogen-activated protein kinases, by using immunoprecipitate and Western blot), MMP-2 (matrix metalloproteinase-2), and MMP-9 (matrix metalloproteinase-9, by using gelatinase zymography) and the proliferation of HMCs in high glucose media were measured.

Method: Compounds were separated by rechromatography on silica gel from the chloroform solubles of its ethanol extracts, and the structures were determined by spectral analysis and chemical evidence.
Result: Three compounds were isolated and elucidated as 6'-O-benzoyldaucosterol, daucosterol and beta-sitosterol.

The insect pathogeny of parasitic hepialus by Cordyceps sinensis is, reported in this paper. The pharmacological effects of three species of Ootheca Mantidises were compared. The results indicate that Tenodera sinensis can increase the index of testis and thymus gland, and has an antidiuretic effect in mice; Statilia maculate can prolong the swimming time and ordinary pressing anoxia, increase the index of spleen and thymus gland, raise the temperature in mice, decrease the content of LPO in liver of the hypercholesteremia rats, and has an antidiuretic effect; Hierodula patellifera can increase the index of testis and thymus gland, raise the temperature in mice, and decrease the content of LPO in liver of the hypercholesteremia rets. The LD50 of the three species of Ootheca Mantidises are all over 320 g/kg.

Four iridoid glucosides were isolated from the root of the species. On the basis of IR, UV, NMR, MS spectral data and chemical methods, their structures were identified as: 8-O-acetylshanzhiside methyl ester(I), 6-O-acetylshanzhiside methyl ester(II), penstemoside(III) and 7, 8-dehydropenstemoside(IV).

The sexual behaviour of Hepialus gonggaensis has close relations with ecological environment and varies with its ecotypes. The more intense the illumination, the faster the sexual drive of Hepialus gonggaensis begins and the longer its sexual intercourse continues, light colours have a bearing on its sexual intercourse time. The effect of cultivating measures on the tuber yield of Curcuma longa was observed. dibble planting has been proved move effective in raising the tuber yield than drill culture, and the dibble planting quantity has no effect on the tuber.
