Advances in high throughput, next generation sequencing technologies have allowed an in-depth examination of biological environments and phenomena, and are particularly useful for culture-independent microbial community studies. Recently the use of RNA for metatranscriptomic studies has been used to elucidate the role of active microbes in the environment. Extraction of RNA of appropriate quality is critical in these experiments and TRIzol reagent is often used for maintaining stability of RNA molecules during extraction.

Article Synopsis
  • Melatonin plays a crucial role in plant growth and stress responses, particularly in rice under cold stress conditions.
  • Exogenous melatonin treatments (soaking seeds, immersing roots, or spraying leaves) can alleviate growth inhibition and oxidative damage caused by cold stress.
  • The most effective methods for enhancing cold stress resistance were seed soaking and root immersion, showing a dose-dependent effect on rice's physiological and biochemical responses.

bHLH (basic helix-loop-helix) transcription factors play important roles in the abiotic stress response in plants, but their characteristics and functions in tartary buckwheat (), a flavonoid-rich cereal crop with a strong stress tolerance, have not been fully investigated. Here, a novel bHLH gene, designated , was isolated and characterized. Expression analysis in tartary buckwheat revealed that was mainly induced by polyethylene glycol 6000 (PEG6000) and abscisic acid (ABA) treatments.

Article Synopsis
  • Pre-harvest sprouting (PHS) in wheat causes significant economic loss in high rainfall areas, and a study evaluated 717 Chinese landraces for PHS resistance using extensive genetic analysis techniques.
  • The results showed that many landraces, especially white-grained ones, had better resistance to PHS, with geographical variations indicating higher resistance in southern China compared to northern regions.
  • Three key genetic regions related to PHS resistance were identified, along with additional factors linked to grain color, suggesting a combination of natural and human selection contributed to enhancing PHS resistance in these wheat varieties.

Identification and Characterization of Switchgrass Histone H3 and CENH3 Genes.

Front Plant Sci

July 2016

Department of Horticulture, Virginia Tech Blacksburg, VA, USA.

Switchgrass is one of the most promising energy crops and only recently has been employed for biofuel production. The draft genome of switchgrass was recently released; however, relatively few switchgrass genes have been functionally characterized. CENH3, the major histone protein found in centromeres, along with canonical H3 and other histones, plays an important role in maintaining genome stability and integrity.
