Biocompatible materials that act as scaffolds for regenerative medicine are of enormous interest. Hydrogel-nanoparticle composites have great potential in this regard, however evaluations of their wound healing and safety in vivo in animal studies are scarce. Here we demonstrate that a guar gum/curcumin-stabilized silver nanoparticle hydrogel composite is an injectable material with exceptional wound healing and antibacterial properties.

Multidrug-resistant emerge through the modification of core genome loci by interspecies homologous recombinations, and acquisition of gene cassettes. Both occurred in the otherwise contrasting histories of the antibiotic-resistant lineages PMEN3 and PMEN9. A single PMEN3 clade spread globally, evading vaccine-induced immunity through frequent serotype switching, whereas locally circulating PMEN9 clades independently gained resistance.

Sulfated galactans (SG) isolated from red alga have been reported to inhibit the growth of cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) cells, which was similar to the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-targeted drug, cetuximab. Herein, we studied the anti-cancer potency of SG compared to cetuximab. Biological studies demonstrated SG and cetuximab had similar inhibition mechanisms in CCA cells by down-regulating EGFR/ERK pathway, and the combined treatment induced a greater inhibition effect.

The reactivation of γ-globin chain synthesis to combine with excess free α-globin chains and form fetal hemoglobin (HbF) is an important alternative treatment for β-thalassemia. We had reported HbF induction property of natural curcuminoids, curcumin (Cur), demethoxycurcumin (DMC) and bis-demethoxycurcumin (BDMC), in erythroid progenitors. Herein, the HbF induction property of trienone analogs of the three curcuminoids in erythroleukemic K562 cell lines and primary human erythroid progenitor cells from β-thalassemia/HbE patients was examined.

This study aimed to examine the predictive validity of two internationally well-known instruments, the Modified Home Falls and Accidents Screening Tool (Modified HOME FAST) and the Modified Home Falls and Accidents Screening Tool-Self Report (Modified HOME FAST-SR), and the newly developed Thai Home Falls Hazard Assessment Tool (Thai-HFHAT) (69 items) in predicting falls among older Thai adults. It also aimed to examine the predictive validity of the two abbreviated versions (44 and 27 items) of the Thai-HFHAT, which were developed post hoc to accommodate older adults' limited literacy and poor vision and to facilitate the identification of high-impact home fall hazards that are prevalent in the Thailand context. A prospective cohort study was conducted among 450 participants aged 60 years and above who were assessed by the aforementioned tools at baseline, for which data on fall incidence were then collected during the one-year follow-up.

Purpose: The potential of members of the epidermal growth factor receptor (ErbB) family as drug targets in cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) has not been extensively addressed. Although phase III clinical trials showed no survival benefits of erlotinib in patients with advanced CCA, the outcome of the standard-of-care chemotherapy treatment for CCA, gemcitabine/cisplatin, is discouraging so we determined the effect of other ErbB receptor inhibitors alone or in conjunction with chemotherapy in CCA cells.
Materials And Methods: ErbB receptor expression was determined in CCA patient tissues by immunohistochemistry and digital-droplet polymerase chain reaction, and in primary cells and cell lines by immunoblot.

Although hot air (HA) is a conventional roasting medium for coffee beans, HA roasting is known to result in possible formation of toxic compounds, including acrolein, acrylamide and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Superheated steam (SHS) roasting is therefore proposed as an alternative means to alleviate the formation of these toxic compounds in roasted coffee beans. Robusta coffee beans were roasted either with HA or SHS in a fluidized bed roaster at 210-250 °C until the bean color reached the targeted roast levels.
