Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the link between nutritional status, as measured by the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI), and cognitive function in older US adults, using data from the NHANES database.
  • The analysis involved nearly 3,000 individuals aged 60 and over, revealing that those categorized as malnourished (GNRI score ≤98) exhibited significantly lower scores in multiple cognitive assessments compared to those with normal nutrition (GNRI score >98).
  • The findings suggest that lower GNRI levels correlate with an increased risk of cognitive decline, particularly in elderly individuals with a history of stroke or other neurological issues.

Development and validation of a risk predictive nomogram for colon cancer-specific mortality: a competing risk model based on the SEER database.

Discov Oncol

November 2024

Department of Oncology, Shuyang Hospital, The Affiliated Shuyang Hospital of Xuzhou Medical University, No. 9 Yingbin Avenue, Shucheng Town, Shuyang County, Suqian, 223600, Jiangsu, China.

Background: Utilizing the SEER database, we developed a competing risk model along with a nomogram designed for the early identification of colon cancer-specific mortality (CSM) risk.

Methods: Clinical and pathological information, along with other significant data, were obtained from the SEER database. Patients were randomly divided into a training set and a validation set.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how changes in alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and γ-glutamyltransferase (GGT) levels affect the prognosis of patients with primary liver cancer (PLC) after they undergo radiofrequency ablation (RFA).
  • Data was collected from 165 patients treated with RFA between 2018 and 2023, utilizing statistical methods like chi-square tests and Cox regression to analyze survival outcomes.
  • Results indicated that both normal ALP and GGT levels correlated with significantly better survival rates compared to abnormal levels, with ALP and GGT identified as key independent prognostic factors for overall survival in PLC patients post-treatment.

Preimplantation genetic testing in the current era, a review.

Arch Gynecol Obstet

May 2024

MOE Engineering Research Center of Gene Technology, Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, Fudan University, Shanghai, 200433, China.

Background: Preimplantation genetic testing (PGT), also referred to as preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), is an advanced reproductive technology used during in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles to identify genetic abnormalities in embryos prior to their implantation. PGT is used to screen embryos for chromosomal abnormalities, monogenic disorders, and structural rearrangements.

Development Of Pgt: Over the past few decades, PGT has undergone tremendous development, resulting in three primary forms: PGT-A, PGT-M, and PGT-SR.

Background: To explore the diagnostic value of procalcitonin (PCT), C-reactive protein-to-lymphocyte ratio (CLR), C-reactive protein (CRP) and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) for predicting patients with bacteremia in the intensive care unit (ICU).

Methods: This case-control study included 359 patients with suspected bacteremia were divided into a bacteremia group (n = 152) and a control group (n = 207) from September 2018 to April 2023. Patient data were collected using a laboratory information system (LIS).

Background: In this study, we aimed to identify the risk factors for new-onset atrial fibrillation (NOAF) after postcoronary intervention in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and to establish a nomogram prediction model.

Methods: The clinical data of 506 patients hospitalized for AMI from March 2020 to February 2023 were retrospectively collected, and the patients were randomized into a training cohort (70%; n = 354) and a validation cohort (30%; n = 152). Independent risk factors were determined using least absolute shrinkage and selection operator and multivariate logistic regression.

Background: Dual antiplatelet treatment has been shown to lower the risk of recurrent stroke as compared with aspirin alone when treatment is initiated early (≤24 hours) after an acute mild stroke. The effect of clopidogrel plus aspirin as compared with aspirin alone administered within 72 hours after the onset of acute cerebral ischemia from atherosclerosis has not been well studied.

Methods: In 222 hospitals in China, we conducted a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, two-by-two factorial trial involving patients with mild ischemic stroke or high-risk transient ischemic attack (TIA) of presumed atherosclerotic cause who had not undergone thrombolysis or thrombectomy.
