Characterization of gut dominant microbiota in obese patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

Front Cell Infect Microbiol

February 2023

Department of General Medicine, Zhejiang Cancer Hospital, Institute of Basic Medicine and Cancer (IBMC), Chinese Academy of Sciences, Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China.

In obese patients, non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFLD) is common. However, whether there is a connection between the gut microbiota and the onset of NAFLD in obese people is yet unknown. Using quantitative real-time PCR, the microbiota of feces of the eligible 181 obese individuals was identified to compare the differences in gut microbiota between obesity with NAFLD and simple obesity.

Introduction: Severe Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) progresses with inflammation and coagulation, due to an overactive complement system. Complement component 5a (C5a) plays a key role in the complement system to trigger a powerful "cytokine and chemokine storm" in viral infection. BDB-001, a recombinant human immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4) that specially binds to C5a, has the potential to inhibit the C5a-triggered cytokine storm in treating COVID-19 patients and other inflammation diseases.

Background & Aims: Human neutrophil peptides (HNP)-1, -2 and -3 are the most abundant proteins in neutrophil azurophilic granules and are rapidly released via neutrophil degranulation upon activation. The aims of our study were to assess the role of HNP1-3 as biomarkers of disease severity in patients with decompensated cirrhosis and their value in predicting short-term mortality.

Methods: In this study, 451 patients with acutely decompensated cirrhosis (AD) were enrolled at the two medical centres.

Article Synopsis
  • ABO-incompatible liver transplantation (ABOi LT) with rituximab desensitization shows survival rates similar to ABO-compatible liver transplantation (ABOc LT), prompting an exploration of the bile microbiota and metabolomics in recipients.
  • A study involving 6 ABOi LT and 12 ABOc LT recipients analyzed bile samples taken at various intervals post-transplant, revealing no significant differences in microbial diversity between the groups after the first week.
  • Notable diversity was observed only 2 days after ABOi LT, characterized by increased biodiversity and specific bacterial genera, but these differences diminished by the end of the first month post-transplant.

Background: With the rapid accumulation of scRNA-seq data, more and more automatic cell type identification methods have been developed, especially those based on deep learning. Although these methods have reached relatively high prediction accuracy, many issues still exist. One is the interpretability.

Background: After years of development, digital replantation has become a mature treatment. Although the NOTUM gene has been shown to be involved in the formation of vertebrate nerves, whether it contributes to the osteogenic mechanism of severed finger replantation remains unknown. In response to this, this study investigates the specific details of NOTUM involvement in replantation of severed fingers.

Background: Erlotinib treatment can lead to skin diseases that drastically affected the quality of life of patients. Quercetin (Que), the active component in Xijiao Dihuang Decoction (XDD), was identified to improve inflammatory skin diseases. However, the mechanism of XDD treating erlotinib-induced cutaneous toxicity was not clear at the molecular level.

This study focused on the investigation into how HMGB3 works in breast cancer (BC) progression. Firstly, we analyzed the relationship between HMGB3 and BC patients through the TCGA database. We performed qRT-PCR for determining the HMGB3 mRNA level and Western blot for detecting the protein level of HMGB3 in BC cell lines.

Profile of Remimazolam in Anesthesiology: A Narrative Review of Clinical Research Progress.

Drug Des Devel Ther

October 2022

Department of Anesthesiology, The First Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, Hangzhou, People's Republic of China.

Remimazolam is a novel short-acting γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptor agonist with typical characteristics of benzodiazepine sedative drugs, nonorgan-dependent metabolism, long-term infusion without accumulation, and no injection pain. It is quite different from the other current sedative drugs and has broad prospects for application. It has been established that the metabolites of remimazolam are inactive, and the interactions with other drugs are weak with slight cardiopulmonary suppressive effects, showing good effectiveness and safety.

Tendinopathy is a common tendon disorder characterized by pain, swelling, and dysfunction. Current evidence has demonstrated that the depletion of stem cell pool and non-tenogenic differentiation of tendon-derived stem/progenitor cells (TSPCs) might account for the pathogenesis of tendinopathy. FNDC5/Irisin, as a novel exercise-induced myokine, is proved to be involved in the exercise-induced protective effects on musculoskeletal disorders.

Background: To establish a new and accurate model for standard liver volume (SLV) estimation and graft size prediction in liver transplantation for Chinese adults.

Methods: In this study, the data of morphologic indices and liver volume (LV) were retrospectively obtained on 507 cadaveric liver transplantation donors between June 2017 and September 2020 in Shulan (Hangzhou) Hospital. Linear regression analysis was performed to evaluate the impact of each parameter and develop a new SLV formula.

Front Genet

July 2022

Department of Hematology, The First Affiliated Hospital, College of Medicine, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China.

Angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL) genomic abnormalities are highly disease-specific, and the ras homology family member A () gene is one of the most recurrent mutated genes, especially for G17V mutation site. Here, we identified a rare A161E mutation in an AITL patient through gene sequencing platforms. The patient presented with persistent hypereosinophilia, asymptomatic or symptomatic mildly for over 3 years.

Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the leading causes of tumor-related death. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) belong to a subfamily of functional non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) and are essential regulators of tumorigenesis. They affect tumor-related therapeutic response, tumor metastasis, and clinical outcomes of several human malignant tumors.

Coronary atherosclerotic heart disease is one of the most common heart diseases that seriously endanger human health. The study found that intracellular second messenger CAMP plays an important role in inhibiting the proliferation and migration of vascular smooth muscle and the local inflammatory response at the damaged vessel. Phosphodiesterase 4D (PDE4D) can specifically degrade cAMP.
