This study investigates the thermal and structural properties of multilayer composites based on chitosan (CS) and polyanions with different functionalities, including sodium sulfoethyl cellulose (SEC), sodium alginate (ALG), and sodium hyaluronate (HA). Unlike polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) obtained by polymer mixing, the formation of a PEC layer by a process of layer-by-layer deposition of oppositely charged polymers is accompanied by the transformation of the CS polymorphic state, and this affects the relaxation and thermal properties of the resulting multilayer composite. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the formation of the PEC layer in the CS/SEC multilayer film is accompanied by crystallization of the CS chains and the formation of a predominantly anhydrous CS modification.

Crystals of Cs(SO)(HPO) belong to the family of alkali metal acid salts that show a high protonic conductivity at relatively low temperatures. Such properties make superprotonic crystals an excellent choice for the study of the influence of the hydrogen subsystem on the physicochemical properties and promising materials for energy-efficient technologies. Single crystals of Cs(SO)(HPO) were studied by neutron diffraction methods, optical polarization microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy.

Potato virus A (PVA) protein coat contains on its surface partially unstructured N-terminal domain of the viral coat protein (CP), whose structural and functional characteristics are important for understanding the mechanism of plant infection with this virus. In this work, we investigated the properties and the structure of intact PVA and partially trypsinized PVAΔ32 virions using small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and complimentary methods. It was shown that after the removal of 32 N-terminal amino acids of the CP, the virion did not disintegrate and remained compact, but the helical pitch of the CP packing changed.

Pressure-stabilized hydrides are a new rapidly growing class of high-temperature superconductors, which is believed to be described within the conventional phonon-mediated mechanism of coupling. Here, the synthesis of one of the best-known high-T superconductors-yttrium hexahydride -YH is reported, which displays a superconducting transition at ≈224 K at 166 GPa. The extrapolated upper critical magnetic field B (0) of YH is surprisingly high: 116-158 T, which is 2-2.

The Ensemble Optimization Method (EOM) is a popular approach to describe small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) data from highly disordered proteins. The EOM algorithm selects subensembles of coexisting states from large pools of randomized conformations to fit the SAXS data. Based on the unphysical bimodal radius of gyration () distribution of conformations resulting from the EOM analysis, a recent article (Fagerberg et al.

Lassa mammarenavirus (LASMV) is responsible for a specific type of acute viral hemorrhagic fever known as Lassa fever. Lack of effective treatments and counter-measures against the virus has resulted in a high mortality rate in its endemic regions. Therefore, in this study, a novel epitope-based vaccine has been designed using the methods of immunoinformatics targeting the glycoprotein and nucleoprotein of the virus.

The insulin receptor (IR), insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF-1R), and insulin receptor-related receptor (IRR) form a mini family of predimerized receptor-like tyrosine kinases. IR and IGF-1R bind to their peptide agonists triggering metabolic and cell growth responses. In contrast, IRR, despite sharing with them a strong sequence homology, has no peptide-like agonist but can be activated by mildly alkaline media.

DNA co-crystallization with Dps family proteins is a fundamental mechanism, which preserves DNA in bacteria from harsh conditions. Though many aspects of this phenomenon are well characterized, the spatial organization of DNA in DNA-Dps co-crystals is not completely understood, and existing models need further clarification. To advance in this problem we have utilized atomic force microscopy (AFM) as the main structural tool, and small-angle X-scattering (SAXS) to characterize Dps as a key component of the DNA-protein complex.

A series of carbosilane dendrimers of the 4th, 6th, and 7th generations with a terminal trimethylsilylsiloxane layer was synthesized. Theoretical models of these dendrimers were developed, and equilibrium dendrimer conformations obtained via molecular dynamics simulations were in a good agreement with experimental small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) data demonstrating molecule monodispersity and an almost spherical shape. It was confirmed that the glass transition temperature is independent of the dendrimer generation, but is greatly affected by the chemical nature of the dendrimer terminal groups.

There has been growing interest in recent years in developing multifunctional materials for studying the structure interface in biological systems. In this regard, the multimodal systems, which possess activity in the near-infrared (NIR) region, become even more critical for the possibility of improving examined biotissue depth and, eventually, data analysis. Herein, we engineered bi-modal contrast agents by integrating carbon nanotubes (CNT) and gold nanoparticles (AuNP) around silica microspheres using the Layer-by-Layer self-assembly method.

The formation of oxide nanorolls decorated with nanotubes during anodic oxidation of amorphous Fe70Cr15B15 alloy in hydrophobic ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (IL) was revealed. The unusual architecture was observed for the first time on the surface of amorphous alloy. The generation of the novel type of nanostructure by electrochemical oxidation of the amorphous Fe70Cr15B15 alloy occurs only in hydrophobic ionic liquid and in the presence of the natural oxide film at the surface.
