Introduction: Arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC) is an umbrella term including hundreds of conditions with the common clinical manifestation of multiple congenital contractures. AMC affects 1 in 3000 live births and is caused by lack of movement in utero. To understand the long-term needs of individuals diagnosed with a rare condition, it is essential to know the prevalence, aetiology and functional outcomes in a large sample.

Objectives: Ankle radiographs are among the most commonly obtained trauma images in the pediatric population, with the standard 3 views (AP/mortise [M]/lateral [L]) routinely ordered in the emergency department. The purpose of this study was to compare the diagnostic accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of sets of 2 views (AP/L or M/L) with the standard 3 views.

Methods: One hundred twenty sets of ankle radiographs of skeletally immature patients obtained in the emergency department of a level 1 pediatric trauma center were used.

Purpose: The purpose of this project was to determine if it is feasible to implement a rapid recovery pathway (RRP) for the surgical treatment of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) within a single-payer universal healthcare system while simultaneously decreasing length of stay (LOS) without increasing post-operative complications.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was completed for all patients who underwent posterior spinal fusion for AIS at a tertiary children's hospital in Canada between March 2010 and February 2019, with date of implementation of the RRP being March 1st, 2015. Patient demographic information was collected along with a variety of outcome variables including: LOS, wound complication, infection, 30-day return to the OR, 30-day emergency department visit, and 30-day hospital readmission.

The Maori of New Zealand have been identified as a high-risk population for slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE). This study assessed whether the burden of disease from SCFE in the American Territory of American Samoa is similar to that identified in the Maori. This was a retrospective review of children from American Samoa treated for SCFE at a tertiary care pediatric hospital between 2005-2014.

Purpose: Previous work has examined the impact of delay of diagnosis in slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) but not the impact of delay in treatment after radiographic diagnosis. Due to requirements for long distance transportation from less developed regions for many of our patients, our hospital was able to study variation in time between diagnosis and surgery for SCFE, as related to slip severity.

Methods: This is a retrospective review of patients treated for SCFE between 2005 and 2014 at a tertiary care paediatric hospital.

Background: Osseous overgrowth is a common problem in children after tibial transcortical amputation. We present the results of forty-seven children (fifty tibiae) treated for tibial osseous overgrowth with an autologous osteocartilaginous cap from the proximal part of the ipsilateral fibula.

Methods: We reviewed the records of all patients who underwent amputation at a single pediatric hospital from 1990 to 2011.

A diagnostic approach for cerebral palsy in the genomic era.

Neuromolecular Med

December 2014

Department of Pediatrics, Shriners Hospitals for Children - Honolulu, University of Hawaii, Honolulu, HI, USA.

An ongoing challenge in children presenting with motor delay/impairment early in life is to identify neurogenetic disorders with a clinical phenotype, which can be misdiagnosed as cerebral palsy (CP). To help distinguish patients in these two groups, conventional magnetic resonance imaging of the brain has been of great benefit in "unmasking" many of these genetic etiologies and has provided important clues to differential diagnosis in others. Recent advances in molecular genetics such as chromosomal microarray and next-generation sequencing have further revolutionized the understanding of etiology by more precisely classifying these disorders with a molecular cause.

Background: Niemann-Pick disease type C1 is a neurodegenerative lysosomal storage disorder. Without a highly effective treatment, biomarkers of severity would be beneficial for prognostication and testing new interventions. Diffusion tensor imaging has shown microstructural abnormalities in adults with Niemann-Pick disease type C1.

Background: Requested project of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America Evidenced-Based Medicine Committee.

Methods: The English literature was systematically reviewed for scientific evidence supporting or disputing the common practice of elective removal of implants in children.

Results: Several case series reported implant removal, but none contained a control group with retained implants.

Purpose: To inform nurse practitioners (NPs) about Mexican American men's health and illness beliefs and the ways in which these are influenced by their masculine identity and how they view themselves as men in their culture.

Data Sources: The data sources used were based on a selected review of the literature about Mexican American men's health and illness beliefs and the concept of machismo. Several studies, including the author's study on Mexican American men's healthcare-seeking beliefs and behaviors and experience in providing primary health care to men across cultures, contributed new data.

This focused ethnography explored health care seeking beliefs and behaviors of Mexican American men living in south central Washington State. Data collection included interviews with 36 research participants living in the community, participant observation in the research setting, and examination of ethnographic documents and cultural artifacts. Four major themes were identified: the identity of manhood dictates health care seeking, health means being able to be a man by fulfilling cultural obligations, illness means not being able to be a man, and men seek health care when their manhood is threatened or impaired.

We present a novel, effective method for verifying intraarticular needle placement for hip aspiration and arthrography. The vacuum created by hip-joint distraction induces an easily visualized movement of air bubbles in attached tubing, thereby confirming accurate localization. The suction-bubble technique is safe, objective, and reproducible in even inexperienced hands.
