Objective: To investigate the prevalence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) producing extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) and metallo-beta-lactamases (MBLs) in burn patients in Algeria.

Methods: Between April 2016 and October 2019, 47 non-redundant isolates of PA were collected from 47 burn patients admitted to the Department of Burns at the Military Hospital of Algiers in Algeria. Antibiotic susceptibility testing was performed by agar diffusion and the Phoenix automated method.

The intricate and delicate structure of the periorbital region, particularly in pediatric patients, presents challenges to eyelid reconstruction. Much like the more common lower eyelid ectropion, upper eyelid ectropion can result from lack of tissue, scar contracture, or over-resection as in blepharoplasty. Multi-Biomarker Prediction Models for Multiple Infection Episodes Following Blunt Trauma.

Severe trauma predisposes patients to multiple independent infection episodes (MIIEs), leading to augmented morbidity and mortality. We developed a method to identify increased MIIE risk before clinical signs appear, which is fundamentally different from existing approaches entailing infections' detection after their establishment. Applying machine learning algorithms to genome-wide transcriptome data from 128 adult blunt trauma patients' (42 MIIE cases and 85 non-cases) leukocytes collected ≤48 hr of injury and ≥3 days before any infection, we constructed a 15-transcript and a 26-transcript multi-biomarker panel model with the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) and Elastic Net, respectively, which accurately predicted MIIE (Area Under Receiver Operating Characteristics Curve [AUROC] [95% confidence intervals, CI]: 0.

The current study assessed the prevalence of appearance concerns, psychosocial difficulty, and use of an appearance-focused social and psychological support resource (Young Person's Face IT; YPF) within a population of teens (12-17 year-olds) receiving outpatient burn care with the goal to assess the feasibility of routine use of the resource in outpatient burn care. The study sample included 78 patients ages 12 to 17 receiving outpatient care for burns at one hospital. Appearance concerns were measured via the Burn Outcomes Questionnaire Appearance Subscale, the Appearance Subscale of the Body Esteem Scale for Adolescents, and a 2-part question which asked participants directly about appearance concerns related to the burn injury.

Semaphorin 3F signaling actively retains neutrophils at sites of inflammation.

Neutrophilic inflammation is central to disease pathogenesis, for example, in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, yet the mechanisms that retain neutrophils within tissues remain poorly understood. With emerging evidence that axon guidance factors can regulate myeloid recruitment and that neutrophils can regulate expression of a class 3 semaphorin, SEMA3F, we investigated the role of SEMA3F in inflammatory cell retention within inflamed tissues. We observed that neutrophils upregulate SEMA3F in response to proinflammatory mediators and following neutrophil recruitment to the inflamed lung.

Existing burn center referral criteria were developed several years ago, and subsequent innovations in burn care have occurred. Coupled with frequent errors in the estimation of extent of burn injury and depth by referring providers, patients are both over and under-triaged when the existing criteria are used to support patient care decisions. In the absence of compelling clinical trial data on appropriate burn patient triage, we convened a multidisciplinary panel of experts to execute an iterative eDelphi consensus process to facilitate a revision.
