Interactions of Phosphate Metabolism With Serious Injury, Including Burns.

Approximately 85% of the body's phosphate pool resides within the skeleton. The remaining 15% is stored as high-energy phosphates or in its free form, where it acts as a substrate for adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production. Accordingly, phosphate plays a crucial role in energy metabolism.

Skin toxicity induced by wet heat.

Pieces of human skin from the skin bank were heated in an autoclave for 1 or 5 min at temperatures 80, 90, 100, 110 and 135 degrees C. The pieces were then homogenized and the homogenates were injected intraperitoneally into groups of mice. The amount injected was either a quantity equivalent to 50 or 75% of the mouse body surface area.

Infestations and chronic infections in foreign pediatric patients with burns: is there a role for specific protocols?

Infestations by parasites such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis and other viral infections are common in third world countries. Consequently, the admission of a significant number of foreign patients to burn centers in the United States may pose new problems, not only for inpatients but also for health care workers. To document infestations in patients from third world countries and to determine the need for specific protocols, we studied 62 consecutive foreign patients admitted to our pediatric burn reconstruction service between July 1997 and December 1998.
