Background Succinylcholine (SCh) is the most commonly used muscle relaxant during endotracheal intubation, and it is known to cause fasciculations and postoperative myalgia. Pregabalin is structurally similar to the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which is known to reduce SCh-induced fasciculations and myalgia. Materials and methods This study was conducted on patients who underwent surgery under general anesthesia.

Background: Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) infections are an emerging global health concern with increasing incidence. Conventional identification methods for NTM species in clinical settings are prone to errors. This study evaluates a newer method, polymerase chain reaction-restriction enzyme analysis (PCR-REA) of the rpoB gene, for NTM species identification.

Background Neuromuscular blocking agents are crucial for anesthesia but can cause reversible paralysis, leading to risks like postoperative residual dysfunction. Undetected paralysis in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) jeopardizes patient safety by impairing airway function and increasing complications. Effective reversal, assessed clinically or via nerve stimulation, is critical to prevent residual postoperative curarization (RPOC), which is linked to significant morbidity and mortality.

Article Synopsis
  • VACTERL association is a grouping of birth defects affecting various organ systems, and a diagnosis requires presence of at least three anomalies without any other identifiable patterns.
  • A case study involves a pregnant woman in her 20s whose fetus was found to have multiple abnormalities during prenatal scans, leading to the decision to terminate the pregnancy due to poor prognosis.
  • Post-abortion autopsy revealed significant defects, including club feet and heart anomalies, demonstrating the value of fetal autopsies for confirming diagnoses and understanding underlying causes in similar situations.

Introduction Breast cancer is considered the most common cancer among women. According to the literature, cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression in breast carcinoma is associated with aggressive tumor biology and acts as an independent prognostic marker. As COX-2 is a newly identified marker, studies are required to understand its immunoexpression and correlation with hormone receptor status and other prognostic factors, which helps in the therapeutic management of patients.

Introduction: Oxytocin is a uterotonic drug that acts on receptors in the myometrium, causing uterine contractions. However, oxytocin receptors are also present in other organs, including the myocardium. Heat-stable carbetocin, a long-acting analog of oxytocin, is also known to act on these oxytocin receptors.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are widely prescribed for various conditions but are associated with numerous adverse drug reactions (ADRs). Understanding these ADRs is necessary to reduce morbidity and mortality. NSAID-induced angioedema, although rare, can be life-threatening and is often due to increased leukotriene production from COX pathway inhibition.

Adult granulosa cell tumour camouflaged as mucinous neoplasm.

BMJ Case Rep

July 2024

Pathology, Shri B.M. Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre, BLDE (Deemed to be University), Vijayapura, Karnataka, India.

This case report delves into the diagnostic intricacies and clinical management of adult granulosa cell tumour (AGCT) in a woman in her 50s, presenting with pain abdomen. Initial imaging investigations like ultrasound suggested diagnosis of benign cystadenoma. Further MRI revealed a large well-defined multiloculated lesion so a diagnosis of neoplastic aetiology/likely mucinous cystadenocarcinoma was offered.

Background and objective While hypertension (HTN) is a major health-related threat globally, it is often an under-reported clinical condition as most of the stage I hypertensive patients do not present with any symptoms. The relationship between endogenous oxygen-sensing protein [erythropoietin (EPO) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)] levels and vascular stress in hypertensive patients is not fully understood as the mechanistic pathway by which these oxygen-sensing proteins alter the vascular physiology and cause hypertension is still a matter of debate. In light of this, we explored the role of these two proteins in the development of vascular stress including increased pulse wave velocity (PWV).

Background Acidosis, hypoxemia, and hypercarbia are symptoms of a syndrome known as perinatal asphyxia that occurs during the first and second stages of labor and shortly after delivery due to poor gas exchange. The Doppler technique is a non-invasive way to assess the risk of neurodevelopment damage in hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) that may be done at the patient's bedside without disturbing them. The study aims to evaluate cranial ultrasound findings in HIE and investigate the role of resistive index (RI) values assessed by color Doppler transcranial ultrasonography in predicting early morbidities in neonates with HIE within 72 hours of life.

Introduction: Hypertension (HTN), a leading risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, is intricately linked with endothelial dysfunction, a hallmark of vascular pathology. The effect of oxidative stress in maintaining the optimum endothelial function in the regulation of blood pressure is yet to be explored. While numerous factors contribute to the pathogenesis of HTN, emerging evidence highlights the pivotal role of oxidative stress in endothelial dysfunction, offering novel insights into the underlying mechanisms.

Background Spinal dysraphism, characterized by incomplete closure of neural and bone spinal structures, manifests as congenital fusion abnormalities along the dorsal midline, involving the skin, subcutaneous tissue, meninges, vertebrae, and neural tissue. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the preferred imaging modality for assessing spinal dysraphism across all age groups, provides direct visualization of the spinal cord without the need for contrast or ionizing radiation while also eliminating bone artifacts and allowing multiplanar imaging. The objective of this study was to evaluate the range of spinal dysraphism lesions and assess the significance of MRI in their evaluation.

Background A major development in noninvasive imaging modalities, computed tomographic enterography (CTE) has a number of benefits over conventional computed tomography (CT) and capsule endoscopy. Through the utilization of multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) technology, CTE expedites the assessment of small bowel diseases, especially in those segments that are not accessible through traditional endoscopy. This study's main goal is to thoroughly evaluate CTE's diagnostic accuracy for a range of small intestinal conditions.
