Med Oncol

September 2024

Department of Bio-Sciences and Technology, Maharishi Markandeshwar Engineering College, Maharishi Markandeshwar (Deemed to Be University), Mullana, Ambala, 133207, India.

The incidence of lung cancer continues to grow globally, contributing to an ever-increasing load on healthcare systems. Emerging evidence has indicated lowered efficacy of conventional treatment strategies, such as chemotherapy, surgical interventions and radiotherapy, prompting the need for exploring alternative interventions. A growing focus on immunotherapy and the development of personalized medicine has paved the way for vaccine-based delivery in lung cancer.

Aging and, in particular, the emergence of age-related disorders is associated with tissue dysfunction and macromolecular damage, some of which can be attributable to accumulated oxidative damage. In the current study, we determine the potential of 'plasma-derived fraction (E5)' for cellular rejuvenation and extending the lifespan of Sprague Dawley (SD) rats. This is a unique study wherein we have used 24-month-old rats and monitored them until the end of their lifespan with and without E5 treatment.

Excessive iron accumulation in the brain plays a significant role in neurodegenerative processes, contributing to the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). AD, a prominent neurological disorder affecting the central nervous system, is characterized by the accumulation of beta-amyloid (Aβ) and tau phosphorylation. This accumulation leads to the subsequent development of cognitive impairments, particularly in learning and memory functions.

RNA methylation is a dynamic and ubiquitous post-transcriptional modification that plays a pivotal role in regulating gene expression in various conditions like cancer, neurological disorders, cardiovascular diseases, viral infections, metabolic disorders, and autoimmune diseases. RNA methylation manifests across diverse RNA species including messenger RNA (mRNA), ribosomal RNA (rRNA), and transfer RNA (tRNA), exerting pivotal roles in gene expression regulation and various biological phenomena. Aberrant activity of writer, eraser, and reader proteins enables dysregulated methylation landscape across diverse malignancy transcriptomes, frequently promoting cancer pathogenesis.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a deteriorating condition triggered by various factors, such as smoking, free radicals, and air pollution. This worsening disease is characterized by narrowing and thickening of airways, painful cough, and dyspnea. In COPD, numerous genes as well as microRNA (miRNA) play a significant role in the pathogenesis of the disease.

Background: Hypogalactia and agalactia in lactating mothers are the major causes of child malnutrition, mortality, morbidity, and overall ill health. The development of such treatments requires a well-designed preclinical study with suitable laboratory animals, which needs to be improved. Thus, a suitably designed study with a laboratory animal to analyse galactagogue activity, along with an assessment of the quality and quantity of milk, is required.

The study is designed to advocate for a harmonized medical device regulatory framework throughout the BRICS countries with a view to facilitating trade, attracting investments and safeguarding patients' health. The development of the medical devices industry in BRICS countries is impeded by a lack of standardized regulation. A harmonized framework would facilitate the approval process, promotion of innovation and wider access for patients to modern medical technologies.

Neuropathy is the most common disorder comprising peripheral nerve damage in diabetic patients. Prolonged hyperglycaemia and oxidative stress cause metabolic imbalance and are the key reasons for the development of diabetic neuropathy. Daidzein, a soy isoflavone possesses potent anti-hyperglycaemic and antioxidant activity.

Liquiritin (LIQ), a bioactive flavonoid from Glycyrrhiza species, has shown significant potential in cancer therapy. LIQ exhibits potent inhibitory effects on various cancer cell types, including breast, lung, liver, and colon cancers, while demonstrating low toxicity towards healthy cells. Its anticancer mechanisms include inducing cell cycle arrest, promoting apoptosis, and modulating inflammation-related pathways.

Glaucoma is caused by high intraocular pressure, which can causes blindness. Combinations of timolol and dorzolamide are used for its treatment with a requirement of multiple dosing with dosing being twice or four times a day. Conventional eye drops have poor pre-corneal retention and is thus less available for action.

An antifungal agent, luliconazole, is commercially available in cream or gel form. The major limitation of these conventional formulations is less residence time at the infection site. The primary objective of this work was to develop luliconazole-loaded polyvinyl alcohol (Luz-PVA) nanofibers for mycotic skin conditions with a longer retention.

Controlled-release drug delivery systems (CRDDS) are more beneficial than conventional immediate release (IRDDS) for reduced intake, prolonged duration of action, lesser adverse effects, higher bioavailability, etc. The preparation of CRDDS is more complex than IRDDS. The hot melt extrusion (HME) technique is used for developing amorphous solid dispersion of poorly water soluble drugs to improve their dissolution rate and oral bioavailability.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a progressive lung disease with an unknown underlying cause. There is no complete cure for IPF; however, two anti-fibrotic agents (Nintedanib and pirfenidone) are approved by the USFDA to extend the patient's life span. Therefore, alternative therapies supporting the survival of fibrotic patients have been studied in recent literature.

Nintedanib, a primary treatment for lung fibrosis, has gathered substantial attention due to its multifaceted potential. A tyrosine kinase inhibitor, nintedanib, inhibits multiple signalling receptors, including endothelial growth factor receptor (VEGFR), platelet-derived growth factor receptor (PDGFR), and fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) and ultimately inhibits fibroblast proliferation and differentiation. Therefore, nintedanib has been studied widely for other ailments like cancers and hepatic fibrosis, apart from lung disorders.
