Article Synopsis
  • * Results showed that children with CAP had higher white blood cell counts, more lung abnormalities detectable via ultrasound, and significant differences in lung ultrasound scores (LUS) compared to healthy children.
  • * The findings suggest that lung ultrasound is a reliable diagnostic tool for CAP, with its results closely linked to serum procalcitonin levels and pediatric critical illness scores, demonstrating high sensitivity and specificity.

Background: The incidence of refractory Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia (RMPP) in children is increasing, posing a serious threat to life safety. Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) has demonstrated the ability to modulate the immune system and has shown the potential to treat RMPP. This study evaluated the clinical efficacy and safety of azithromycin combined with IVIG in the treatment of RMPP in children through a meta-analysis.

Background: Approximately one person in 1000 is a Robertsonian translocation carrier. Errors in the formation of eggs (or more rarely of sperms) may be the cause of Robertsonian translocation. Most Robertsonian translocation carriers are healthy and have a normal lifespan, but do have an increased risk of offsprings with trisomies and pregnancy loss.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on the effectiveness of rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE) for diagnosing invasive pulmonary fungal infections using touch imprints from bronchoscopic and lung tissue biopsies, which can initiate antifungal therapy faster.
  • Analyzing 44 patients with confirmed fungal infections, the results showed that ROSE has a sensitivity of 81.8%, making it comparable to traditional methods like histopathology, which had a sensitivity of 86.4%.
  • Rapid on-site evaluation provided results in just about 10 minutes, significantly quicker than other diagnostic techniques, and facilitated early antifungal treatment for 76.3% of patients, leading to clinical improvement.

Pulmonary cryptococcosis (PC) is an invasive pulmonary fungal disease caused by or It often presents as a single nodule or mass on radiology, which is easily misdiagnosed as lung cancer or metastases. However, cases of PC coexisting with lung cancer are rare and when this scenario is encountered in clinical practice, it is easy to be misdiagnosed as metastatic lung cancer. The present study reported the case of a 65-year-old immunocompetent patient with PC coexisting with lung adenocarcinoma.

Therapeutic effects of fenticonazole on bacterial vaginosis in mice.

FEMS Microbiol Lett

January 2023

Department of Medical Genetics and Prenatal Screening, Shiyan Maternal and Child Health Hospital, Shiyan 442000, Hubei province, PR China.

Bacterial vaginitis (BV) is a syndrome of increased vaginal discharge, fishy smelling leucorrhea, and itching and burning vulva caused by the microecological imbalance in the vagina induced by mixture of Gardnerella vaginalis (GV) and some anaerobic bacteria. Fenticonazole, an imidazole derivative and antimicrobial compound, has been demonstrated to exert effective therapeutic effects in mixed vaginitis. Accordingly, our study was designed to explore the potential role of fenticonazole in GV-infected BV mouse models.

The spatiotemporal matching pattern of Ezrin/Periaxin involved in myoblast differentiation and fusion and Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease-associated muscle atrophy.

J Transl Med

March 2023

Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, Postgraduate Union Training Basement of Jin Zhou Medical University, Hubei University of Medicine, Shiyan, 442000, Hubei, People's Republic of China.

Background: Clinically, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT)-associated muscle atrophy still lacks effective treatment. Deletion and mutation of L-periaxin can be involved in CMT type 4F (CMT4F) by destroying the myelin sheath form, which may be related to the inhibitory role of Ezrin in the self-association of L-periaxin. However, it is still unknown whether L-periaxin and Ezrin are independently or interactively involved in the process of muscle atrophy by affecting the function of muscle satellite cells.

Uniparental disomy (UPD) is a well-known epigenomic anomaly with both copies of a homologous pair of chromosomes (or part thereof) inherited from the same parent. Unlike numerical or structural chromosomal aberrations, UPD has no effects on chromosome number or structure, thereby escaping cytogenetic detection. However, UPD detection could be performed by the microsatellite analysis or SNP-based chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA) method.
