Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) impacts approximately 50% of individuals with Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), leading to severe complications such as foot ulcers and amputations. Notably, visceral adiposity is increasingly recognized as a pivotal factor in augmenting the risk of DPN. We aim to evaluate the correlation between obesity-related body composition, particularly visceral fat, and DPN to facilitate early identification of high-risk patients with T2DM.

Objective: This study proposes a region-wide blood glucose management system to solve the problem of blood glucose management in patients with diabetes.

Methods: A professional team of doctors, nurses and dietitians jointly developed a region-wide blood glucose management system. The system operates through a collaborative approach where each team member utilises their specialised role, such as data monitoring, algorithm development or patient support, to contribute to a comprehensive blood glucose management network.

The primary aim of this study is to assess the viability of employing multimodal radiomics techniques for distinguishing between cervical spinal cord injury and spinal cord concussion in cervical magnetic resonance imaging. This is a multicenter study involving 288 patients from a major medical center as the training group, and 75 patients from two other medical centers as the testing group. Data regarding the presence of spinal cord injury symptoms and their recovery status within 72 h were documented.

Department of Neurology, The Second Affiliated Hospital, Fujian Medical University, Quanzhou 362000, Fujian Province, China; The Second Clinical Medical College of Fujian Medical University, Quanzhou 362000Fujian Province, China. Electronic address:

Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is an autoimmune-mediated primary inflammatory myelinopathy of the central nervous system that primarily affects the optic nerve and spinal cord. The aquaporin 4 antibody (AQP4-Ab) is a specific autoantibody marker for NMOSD. Most patients with NMOSD are seropositive for AQP4-Ab, thus aiding physicians in identifying ways to treat NMOSD.

Purpose: Esketamine, the S(+) enantiomer of ketamine, exhibits good anesthetic efficacy and controllability; however, its potential clinical applications, particularly in sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE), remain underexplored. SAE involves the development of diffuse brain dysfunction after sepsis, leading to markedly increased sepsis-related disability and mortality. In this study, we investigated the effects of esketamine pretreatment on acute SAE.

Department of Anesthesiology, The Second Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University, No. 34 North Zhongshan Road, Quanzhou, 362000, Fujian Province, China.

The pathological features of Alzheimer's disease are the formation of amyloid plaques and entanglement of nerve fibers. Studies have shown that Cu may be involved in the formation of amyloid plaques. However, their role has been controversial.

July 2023

Department of Neurology, Second Affiliated Hospital, Fujian Medical University, Quanzhou, Fujian Province 362000, China. Electronic address:

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common age-related neurodegenerative disorder characterized by damage to nigrostriatal dopaminergic neurons. Key pathogenic mechanisms underlying PD include alpha-synuclein misfolding and aggregation, impaired protein clearance, mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and neuroinflammation. However, to date, no study has confirmed the specific pathogenesis of PD.

Sevoflurane, commonly administered to children as anesthesia, often leads to emergence delirium (ED). Currently, a consensus is lacking among clinicians regarding pharmacological interventions to improve recovery. To determine an effective approach, we compared the effects of several drugs in lowering the incidence of ED after sevoflurane anesthesia in children.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the disease burden of prostate cancer (PC) and assess key influencing factors associated with the disease expenditures of PC in the United States.

Methods: The total deaths, incidence, prevalence, and disability-adjusted life-years of PC were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019. The Medical Expenditure Panel Survey was used to estimate healthcare expenditures and productivity loss and to investigate patterns of payment and use of healthcare resources in the United States.

Recent research progress on metabolic syndrome and risk of Parkinson's disease.

Rev Neurosci

October 2023

Department of Neurology, The Second Affiliated Hospital, Fujian Medical University, No. 34 North Zhongshan Road, Quanzhou 362000, Fujian Province, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Parkinson's disease (PD) is a widespread neurodegenerative disorder marked by the loss of dopaminergic neurons, leading to both motor symptoms (like tremors and stiffness) and non-motor symptoms (such as cognitive issues and fatigue).
  • Metabolic syndrome (MetS) encompasses various health conditions like obesity, hypertension, and diabetes, which are linked to chronic diseases and share several biological processes with PD, including oxidative stress and inflammation.
  • Recent studies suggest that MetS increases the risk of developing PD, and certain metabolic therapies may offer promising preventative and therapeutic benefits for those at risk.

Background: Myocardial infarction is one of the most common types of coronary heart disease. It is mainly caused by the rupture of coronary atherosclerotic plaque, which leads to platelet agglutination and thrombosis. The occlusion of coronary arteries and vessels leads to insufficient myocardial blood supply, subsequently causing cardiac interstitial fibrosis, gradual enlargement of ventricles, and heart failure, which affects the quality of life and safety of patients.

Circular RNAs as Novel Diagnostic Biomarkers and Therapeutic Targets in Kidney Disease.

Front Med (Lausanne)

September 2021

Department of Nephrology, The First Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, China.

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are a novel type of non-coding RNAs that have aroused growing attention in this decade. They are widely expressed in eukaryotes and generally have high stability owing to their special closed-loop structure. Many circRNAs are abundant, evolutionarily conserved, and exhibit cell-type-specific and tissue-specific expression patterns.

Background: Ulcerative colitis (UC) patients have an increased risk for the development of colorectal cancer (CRC). Our aim was to assess the risk of CRC in UC patients compared with disease extent, disease duration, and geographic variation.

Methods: In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched PubMed, scientific meetings, and the bibliographies of identified articles, with English language restrictions for studies published from 1988 to 2018, and assessed the risk of CRC in UC patients.
