A recently introduced metric for assessing metabolic syndrome (MetS) is the triglyceride glucose-body mass index (TyG-BMI). Additionally, the glycemic index (GI) is recognized as a significant measure for evaluating conditions associated with blood glucose. In this context, our research explores the correlation between TyG-BMI and GI in relation to diet quality, anthropometric measurements, and blood pressure among individuals diagnosed with MetS.

Background: The KHDC3L gene encodes a component of the subcortical maternal complex (SCMC). Biallelic mutations in this gene cause 5%-10% of biparental hydatidiform moles (BiHM), and a few maternal deletions in KHDC3L have been identified in women with recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL).

Method: In this study, we had a patient with a history of 10 pregnancy or neonatal losses, including spontaneous abortions, neonatal deaths, and molar pregnancy.

Addressing mandibular defects poses a significant challenge in maxillofacial surgery. Recent advancements have led to the development of various biomimetic composite scaffolds aimed at facilitating mandibular defect reconstruction. This study aimed to assess the regenerative potential of a novel composite scaffold consisting of polylactic acid (PLA), hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (n-HA), gelatin, hesperidin, and human dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) in a rat model of mandibular bone defect.

Background: Corrosive substance ingestion is rare but can cause severe injury, especially to the upper gastrointestinal tract, and can be a potentially fatal event. Various surgical procedures have been advocated for gastroesophageal reconstruction, but especially those using the right colon, when the ileocecal valve is preserved for gastric reconstruction, are briefly exposed in literature and have not been studied in humans by controlled studies. Using the right colon is believed to be beneficial because of the anti-reflux mechanism of the ileocecal valve.

Objectives: Basilic vein transposition (BVT) surgery is a crucial option for vascular access in hemodialysis patients when other alternatives are unavailable. One of the primary complications affecting the long-term function of arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) is the development of pseudoaneurysms, often caused by repeated punctures at the same site. This study aims to evaluate whether increasing the length of the basilic vein available for cannulation during the second stage of BVT surgery reduces the risk of puncture-related pseudoaneurysms, thereby improving fistula longevity and functionality.

Background And Aims: Morgagni hernias are rare congenital diaphragmatic defects that can lead to bowel obstruction and incarceration if not repaired. While this disease typically manifests as respiratory distress, frequent respiratory infections, and infant growth failure, it can sometimes be accidentally discovered in adulthood through cross-sectional imaging. We aimed to report our experience managing this entity during 20 years at our referral center.

Despite the importance of finding replacements for fetal bovine serum (FBS), very few studies have focused on this subject. Historically, the use of animals and their derivatives in growth, reproduction, and physiological studies has raised several concerns. The supplementation of culture media with FBS, also known as fetal calf serum, continues to be widespread, despite its limitations in quality, reproducibility, and implications for animal welfare.

Article Synopsis
  • A rare case report discusses a 20-year-old Iranian woman who experienced a ruptured right common iliac aneurysm one year after having deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which was treated with rivaroxaban.
  • The surgical repair was successful, but she faced complications, including abdominal pain, small bowel obstruction, and a large pancreatic pseudocyst, despite ongoing anticoagulant therapy.
  • The report highlights the unusual link between DVT and vascular aneurysms and emphasizes the need to consider potential complications arising from aneurysms when treating DVT in patients.

Background: Metabolic syndrome is a prevalent and common health problem and numerous studies have revealed the role of diet and lifestyle change in prevention of metabolic syndrome. However, the novel dietary index, cardioprotective index (CPI) and its association with metabolic syndrome is not investigated yet. In the current study, we evaluated the association between metabolic syndrome and its components, CPI, Nesfatin-1 and Omentin-1in a cross-sectional study.

Background: The current study aimed to evaluate the association between the intake of plant-based protein, animal-based protein, total protein, and the ratio of plant to animal protein with sleep quality and quality of life in patients undergoing hemodialysis.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 479 adult patients undergoing dialysis for a minimum of 3 months were included. The dietary intake was calculated using information from a validated 168-item semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire.

Enhancing wound healing via modulation of autophagy-induced apoptosis: the role of nicotinamide riboside and resveratrol in streptozotocin-treated diabetic rat.

J Nutr Biochem

November 2024

Autoimmune Bullous Diseases Research Center, Razi Hospital, Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran; Department of Dermatology, Babol University of Medical Sciences, Babol, Iran. Electronic address:

Impaired wound healing from diabetes mellitus (DM) causes lower limb amputations, posing clinical, social, and economic issues. Hypoxia and advanced glycation end products cause autophagy and apoptosis dysregulation, which delays wound healing. The study will test systemic and topical Nicotinamide Riboside (NR) and Resveratrol (RSV) for the capacity to modulate autophagy and apoptosis via the SIRT-1-FOXO1 pathway and improve diabetic wound healing.

Article Synopsis
  • Heart rate variability (HRV) has potential as a tool for assessing the severity of hemorrhagic shock (HS) by comparing it with traditional methods of measuring hemodynamic and metabolic parameters.
  • The study involved male Sprague-Dawley rats subjected to varying degrees of HS, revealing that HRV changes, particularly in low-frequency power and respiratory sinus arrhythmia, correlate with blood pressure and tissue perfusion.
  • Despite observed HRV alterations being linked to hemodynamic factors, they didn’t show a direct connection with inflammatory responses in the animals.

Background: Drug-related problems (DRPs) are frequently observed in intensive care units, resulting in a higher occurrence of drug side effects and increased treatment expenses. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of DRPs in pediatric patients admitted to the most prominent surgical and medical pediatric intensive care units (PICUs) in southern Iran, given the susceptibility of children to the effects of DRPs.

Method: This cross-sectional study was conducted at Namazi Hospital, which is affiliated with Shiraz University of Medical Sciences in Shiraz, Iran, from June 2022 to March 2023.

Background: Thymoquinone (TQ) has some beneficial roles in bone repair. Local administration of the drugs by loading them into a scaffold leads to releasing higher concentrations of a drug in the appropriate position. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of the local administration of TQ loaded in an alginate scaffold on bone regeneration in rabbit mandibular defect.

Article Synopsis
  • Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) can cause severe health issues, especially in those with weakened immune systems, and current diagnostic tests for HCMV have limitations in sensitivity and specificity.
  • Researchers aimed to create a new, more accurate multi-epitope antigen for diagnosing HCMV infections using immunoinformatic methods, selecting five key proteins based on their antigenic properties.
  • The designed antigen showed promising stability and antigenicity without cross-reactivity and is a potential candidate for better HCMV diagnosis, although further lab testing is needed to confirm its effectiveness.*
