Celery () was shown to have beneficial effects on cardiometabolic factors in animal models. As the progression of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) adversely affects cardiometabolic factors, we aimed to assess the effects of celery powder on glycemic and anthropometric indices, lipid profile, liver function, oxidative stress, and blood pressure of individuals with T2DM. In a pilot randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical trial, 50 eligible adults with T2DM were randomly divided into two groups of intervention and control to consume either 750 mg of celery powder (obtained from fresh celery) or placebo along with a low-calorie diet for 12 weeks, respectively.

An efficient one-pot, three-component process for the synthesis of benzimidazole derivatives using a catalytic amount of Fe(iii) porphyrin has been developed. The reaction proceeds domino C-N bond formation and cyclization reactions of benzo-1,2-quinone, aldehydes and ammonium acetate as a nitrogen source to selectively produce benzimidazole. A number of benzimidazole derivatives have been synthesized using this method in high yields under mild reaction conditions.

In the present study, fluorogenic coumarin-based probes (1-3) through condensation of 4-hydroxy coumarin with malondialdehyde bis(diethyl acetal)/triethyl orthoformate were prepared. The absorption and fluorescence emission properties of 2b and 3 in different solvents were studied, and a considerable solvatochromic effect was observed. The sensitivity of chemosensors 2b and 3 toward various cations and anions was investigated.

We have synthesized a novel, bis-bidentate, covalently anchored, 4,6-diacetyl resorcinol (DAR) ligand on silica-coated magnetic FeO nanoparticles and the corresponding bi-metallic iron(iii) complex (FeO@SiO-APTESFeL). Both the chemical nature and the structure of the homogeneously heterogenized catalyst were investigated using physico-chemical techniques. The results obtained by XPS, XRD, FT-IR, TGA, VSM, SEM, TEM, EDX, ICP and AAS revealed a magnetic core, a silica layer and the grafting of a binuclear iron complex on the FeO@SiO-APTES, as well as its thermodynamic stability.

For the first time, in this study, a novel optical fiber biosensor is proposed and developed coating only one smart functional layer of silica-supported carbon dots realizing the concepts of both lossy mode resonance (LMR) and molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) for epinephrine detection. The carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are prepared using a green synthesis method and then treated with a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) strategy. Under ultrasonic irradiation, a SiO shell was stabilized on the surface of the CQDs to graft and to provide the LMR/MIP functional layer onto the curved optical fiber surface.

The purpose of this work was to investigate the potential production of protein isolated (TQPI) to improve the quality of low-fat desserts. In this study, low-fat desserts incorporating TQPI (0, 1%, 3%, and 5%) were produced. The results indicated that as TQPI increased, protein content, acidity, b*, hardness, and water-holding capacity (WHC) increased.

In the present study, the effect of modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) on microbial (total aerobic count, yeasts and molds, Enterobacteriaceae, psychrotrophic bacteria, and lactic acid bacteria), physicochemical (pH, moisture content, and color), and sensory properties of raw ready-to-eat leek was investigated after disinfection using Percidin-Nanosil disinfectants. There were six different treatments, of which four samples were packaged as MAP (T to T) and two samples were packaged as non-MAP (T and T). The highest and the lowest reduction in the number of microorganisms after disinfection was observed in psychrotrophic bacteria and total aerobic count, respectively.

Parboiling is a type of heat pretreatment used in rice processing to reach higher head rice yield and improve the nutrition properties of raw rice. In this research, the goals were prediction and determination of optimum conditions for parboiled rice processing using the response surface method (RSM) as well as modeling the output values by linear regression (LR) and artificial neural networks (ANN). The parameters including steaming time (0, 5, 10, and 15 min), dryer type (solar and continuous dryers), and drying air temperature (35, 40, and 45°C) were employed as input values.

Mixed-cation perovskite materials have shown great potential for sunlight harvesting and have surpassed unmixed perovskite materials in solar cell efficiency and stability. The role of mixed monovalent cations in the enhanced optoelectronic properties and excited state response, however, are still elusive from a theoretical perspective. Herein, through time dependent density functional theory calculations of mixed cation perovskites, we report the electronic structure of Cs formamidinium (FA) mixed cationic lead iodide (CsFAPbI) in comparison to the corresponding single monovalent cation hybrid perovskite.

Freshwater habitats of the Caucasus biodiversity hotspot represent a center of endemism for the gobiid genus Iljin, 1927. Hitherto, large-scale molecular studies, owing to restricted taxon and geographical sampling, have failed to give an elaborate picture of diversity and evolutionary history of these species. Here, to contribute to filling this gap, we assessed taxonomic diversity, phylogeography and evolutionary history for the south Caspian populations of presently classified as and , using an integrative taxonomic approach comprising an entire geographic range sampling, and analyses of mitochondrial DNA haplotypes, the head lateral line system, otolith shape, and meristic and morphometric variation.

Entrance of coronavirus into cells happens through the spike proteins on the virus surface, for which the spike protein should be cleaved into S1 and S2 domains. This cleavage is mediated by furin, a member of the proprotein convertases family, which can specifically cleave Arg-X-X-Arg↓ sites of the substrates. Here, folate (folic acid), a water-soluble B vitamin, is introduced for the inhibition of furin activity.

A reductive filter paper for selective nitro reduction has been prepared by modification of a pristine cellulose filter paper by Pd/C nanoparticles, as a portable catalyst. The reaction was performed in two different set-ups including (i) filtration and (ii) sealed systems, in the presence of ammonium formate and generated hydrogen gas reducing agents, respectively. In the sealed system in the presence of H gas, the halogenated nitroarenes were completely reduced, while in the filtration system, different derivatives of the nitroarenes were selectively reduced to aryl amines.

A layer of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) was applied on the photoanode of a self-powered photoelectrochemical (PEC) UV photodetector based on TiO nanotubes (NTs). The GQDs layer acted as a dual functional layer and improved the photodetector performance by both UV light absorption and blocking the charge carriers recombination at the photoanode/electrolyte interface. The short circuit current density (sc) and thereby the responsivity of the PEC UV photodetector was enhanced by 473%.
