A prevailing paradigm suggests that species richness increases with area in a decelerating way. This ubiquitous power law scaling, the species-area relationship, has formed the foundation of many conservation strategies. In spatially complex ecosystems, however, the area may not be the sole dimension to scale biodiversity patterns because the scale-invariant complexity of fractal ecosystem structure may drive ecological dynamics in space.

Fish rubbings, 'gyotaku', as a source of historical biodiversity data.

Methods for obtaining historical biodiversity information are mostly limited to examining museum specimens or surveying past literature. Such materials are sometimes time limited due to degradation, discarding, or other loss. The Japanese cultural art of 'gyotaku', which means "fish impression" or "fish rubbing" in English, captures accurate images of fish specimens, and has been used by recreational fishermen and artists since the Edo Period (the oldest known 'gyotaku' was made in 1839).

Preliminary report on bycatch fish species collected from the Tokyo Submarine Canyon, Japan.

An ichthyofaunal list of bycatch species was compiled, the fish captured by bottom gill-nets set at approximately 300 m depth in the Uraga Suido Channel central Japan. Fragmentary ichthyofaunal lists are available for this area; these lists have focused on chondrichthyans or commercial actinopterygians, but voucher specimens have not been prepared for museum storage. An initial list of the fish fauna was compiled with vouchers, and seven species not previously recorded from the channel are reported.
