Golden-winged Warblers () have become rare across much of their historic breeding range and response to conservation efforts is variable. Evidence from several recent studies suggests that breeding output is a primary driver explaining responses to conservation and it is hypothesized that differences in food availability may be driving breeding output disparity between two subpopulations of the warbler's Appalachian breeding range. Herein, we studied two subpopulations: central Pennsylvania ("central subpopulation"), where breeding productivity is relatively low, and eastern Pennsylvania ("eastern subpopulation"), where breeding productivity is relatively high.

3-D printing the structural components of facemasks and personal protective equipment (PPE) based on 3-D facial scans creates a high degree of customizability. As a result, the facemask fits more comfortably with its user's specific facial characteristics, filters contaminants more effectively with its increased sealing effect, and minimizes waste with its cleanable and reusable plastic structure compared to other baseline models. In this work, 3-D renditions of the user's face taken with smartphone laser scanning techniques were used to generate customized computer-aided design (CAD) models for the several components of an N95 respirator, which are each designed with considerations for assembly and 3-D printing constraints.

For unconscious perception research, Bayesian statistics are more appropriate for assessing null awareness of masked stimuli than traditional (frequentist) statistics. This assertion is based mostly upon the theoretical features of Bayesian statistics and modeling studies. To further assess the potential advantages, we compared frequentist and Bayesian statistical tests in a masked Stroop priming experiment in which the prime stimuli were presented at varying degrees of visibility.

Article Synopsis
  • The mechanisms that lead to trait conservation over long periods in evolution are not well understood and can involve either constraints or selection.
  • Constraints can limit trait changes, but natural selection may uphold similar traits across species if the reasons for that selection are also stable over time.
  • In a study on wild radish, researchers found that reducing the difference in stamen lengths (anther separation) showed a clear response to selection with minimal genetic variation loss, implying that selection, not strong constraints, plays a key role in maintaining this trait despite its unclear function.

Differences in Habitual and Maximal Gait Velocity Across Age Groups: A Cross-Sectional Examination.

J Aging Phys Act

December 2023

Department of Health, Human Performance, and Recreation, Exercise Science Research Center, University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, AR,USA.

Prior work, primarily focusing on habitual gait velocity, has demonstrated a cost while walking when coupled with a cognitive task. The cost of dual-task walking is exacerbated with age and complexity of the cognitive or motor task. However, few studies have examined the dual-task cost associated with maximal gait velocity.

The opioid overdose crisis remains of critical concern after historic increases in overdose mortality in the United States between 2020 and 2021. Improving access to buprenorphine -a partial opioid agonist and one of three FDA-approved medications for opioid use disorder (OUD) treatment- and reducing inappropriate opioid prescriptions may help curb mortality. Here, we examined the impact of Medicaid expansion and pain management clinic laws on opioid prescription rates and buprenorphine availability.

The study of adaptation helps explain biodiversity and predict future evolution. Yet the process of adaptation can be difficult to observe due to limited phenotypic variation in contemporary populations. Furthermore, the scarcity of male fitness estimates has made it difficult to both understand adaptation and evaluate sexual conflict hypotheses.

In this study, we examine how full nurse practitioner (NP) practice authority affects racial and ethnic diversity of the NP workforce. Specifically, the purpose of our research is to understand the relationship between the racial and ethnic composition of the NP workforce, NP level of practice authority, and the communities they service. In this paper, we compare the ethnic and racial composition of the NP workforce to the composition of the state's population, and then observe if there are any noticeable differences in the patients served by NPs when we compare full practice authority (FPA) and non-FPA states.

The harmful effects of suspended sediment (SS) exposures on aquatic ecosystems have been well documented. Integrating this knowledge into the management plans of in-stream construction projects that cause SS releases remains challenging. Commonly, these projects have fixed scopes that require decisions about trade-offs between elevated SS concentrations (SSC, mg∙L) and duration of exposure (DoE, h).

The luminescence properties of two types of heterotrimetallic aluminum-lanthanide-sodium 12-metallacrown-4 compounds are presented here, LnNa(ben)[12-MC-4] (LnAl4Na) and {LnNa[12-MC-4]}(iph) (Ln2Al8Na2), where Ln = Gd, Tb, Er, and Yb, MC is metallacrown, ben is benzoate, shi is salicylhydroximate, and iph is isophthalate. The aluminum-lanthanide-sodium metallacrowns formed with benzoate are discrete monomers while, upon replacement of the benzoate with the dicarboxylate isophthalate, two individual metallacrowns can be joined to form a dimer. In the solid state, the terbium version of each structure type displays emission in the visible region, and the erbium and ytterbium complexes emit in the near-infrared.

Many studies have investigated the consequences of exposure to fine-grained suspended sediments (SS) on aquatic organisms. Exposure has two components-concentration and duration-and can be expressed as dose, where we define suspended sediment dose (SSD: mg·h·L) as the product of suspended sediment concentration (SSC: mg·L) and duration of exposure (DoE: h). We evaluated these three measurement endpoints for managing SS effects on salmonids by assembling and analyzing all published SS dose-response observations.
