Introduction: Precocious puberty (PP), which is sometimes divided into gonadotropin-dependent or gonadotropin-independent PP, is a pathological condition characterized by premature secretion of gonadal steroids resulting in the early development of secondary sexual characteristics. Girls younger than 6 years with idiopathic gonadotropin-dependent PP (referred to as central PP or CPP) who receive gonadotropin-releasing hormone analog (GnRHa) therapy experience an increase in their adult height (AH) in contrast to girls who are aged 6 years or more, who show no consistent pattern of increase even with GnRHa therapy.

Methods: In total, 133 girls aged 6 years or more who visited any one of the seven study centers between April 2000 and March 2020 and who met the diagnostic criteria for PP in Japan were retrospectively examined.

Promising outcomes have been reported in elder patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) using combined therapy of venetoclax (VEN) and azacytidine (AZA) in recent years. However, approximately one-third of patients appear to be refractory to this therapy. Vitamin K2 (VK2) shows apoptosis-inducing activity in AML cells, and daily oral VK2 (menaquinone-4, GlakayR) has been approved for patients with osteoporosis in Japan.

Background: Cholesterol levels and bile acid metabolism are important drivers of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) progression. Using a mouse model, we investigated the mechanism by which cholesterol exacerbates MASH and the effect of colestyramine (a bile acid adsorption resin) and elobixibat (an apical sodium-dependent bile acid transporter inhibitor) concomitant administration on bile acid adsorption and MASH status.

Methods: Mice were fed a high-fat high-fructose diet with varying concentrations of cholesterol to determine changes in fatty liver according to liver status, water intake, defecation status, insulin resistance, bile acid levels, intestinal permeability, atherosclerosis (in apolipoprotein E knockout mice), and carcinogenesis (in diethylnitrosamine mice).

Tracheocutaneous fistula and tracheostomy scar are complications associated with the prolonged use of tracheostomy tubes. They have functional and cosmetic problems owing to tracheal tugging during swallowing and easily visible scars. Although many procedures exist to correct this issue, there is no consensus on the optimal surgical technique.

Non-invasive imaging techniques have greatly advanced the assessment of liver fibrosis and steatosis but are not fully evaluated in overweight patients. We evaluated the diagnostic performance of vibration-controlled transient elastography (VCTE) and magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) to assess fibrosis and controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) and MR imaging (MRI)-proton density fat fraction (MRI-PDFF) to assess steatosis in overweight and obese patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). We included 163 biopsy-proven patients with NAFLD who underwent VCTE, MRE/MRI-PDFF, and liver biopsy (years 2014-2020) who were classified according to their body mass index (BMI) as normal (BMI < 25 kg/m, n = 38), overweight (25 ≤ BMI < 30 kg/m, n = 68), and obese (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m, n = 57).

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is currently the most common chronic liver disease, affecting up to 25% of the global population. Simple fatty liver, in which fat is deposited in the liver without fibrosis, has been regarded as a benign disease in the past, but it is now known to be prognostic. In the future, more emphasis should be placed on the quantification of liver fat.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed data from a Japanese multicenter registry (K-ACTIVE) to compare the clinical outcomes of radial versus femoral access sites for primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in STEMI patients from 2015 to 2021.
  • Radial access was used in 70.3% of patients and was associated with shorter door-to-device times and lower rates of bleeding events compared to femoral access, especially in more severe cases.
  • Overall, the findings suggest that radial access in STEMI patients undergoing PCI may result in better clinical outcomes, including fewer major adverse cardiac events and composite events compared to femoral access.

Patients with traumatic brain injury(TBI)have various pathological conditions, such as direct cell destruction by external force, compression by hematoma, vascular injury, ischemia, complicated hypoxia, and hypotension. These pathological conditions occur simultaneously at the time of injury. In some cases, contaminated wounds may be treated, and infection patterns different from the scheduled neurosurgical cases should be managed.

Background: The incidence and burden of fragility fractures have reached the level where comprehensive systematic care is warranted to optimize the care of these patients. Hip fractures are the most frequently lethal and independence level changing fragility fractures, responsible for 30-day mortality comparable to high-energy trauma patients with injury severity scores over 12. It is a reasonable expectation that countries have a hip fracture treating system of care in place for this high-risk population.
