The patient was a 64-year-old man who underwent medical examination for anorexia and hematochezia. An abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan showed a large advanced rectal cancer with multiple metastases to the liver. We judged a radical operation to be impossible and performed a sigmoid colostomy for unresectable rectal cancer with multiple liver metastases.

We report a case of a patient with unresectable gastric cancer who showed complete response(CR)to S-1 and paclitaxel (PTX)combination therapy. The patient(a 67-year-old woman)was diagnosed with unresectable advanced gastric cancer with metastases in the Virchow's lymph nodes and para-aortic lymph nodes. Systemic chemotherapy with 70mg/m2 S-1 (days 1-14)and 70mg/m2 PTX(day 1)was administered every 3 weeks.

Calponin h1 (CNh1) is an actin-binding protein originally isolated from vascular smooth muscle and has been reported to suppress bone formation. We are therefore curious how CNh1 is involved in bone loss that is caused by space flight in microgravity. We assessed the effects of tail suspension (TS) in C57BL/6J wild (CN+/+) and CNh1-deleted (CN-/-) mice to elucidate the role of CNh1 in bone loss under weightless conditions.

History of cardiopulmonary bypass has been the pursuit for less invasiveness. Currently, about 60% of primary coronary artery bypass grafting is performed as off-pump coronary artery bypass (OPCAB). We tried to determine whether OPCAB by the lower partial sternotomy could be safely performed in the elderly patients with the age equal to or over 80 years.

A 36-year-old man suffered multiple traumatic injuries when he fell from a crane. Fractures of both lower extremities, a compression fracture of the fourth lumbar vertebra, and bilateral hemopneumothoraxes were identified. The sternum was not fractured, but was tender.
