Background: The factors affecting cardiovascular risk associated with vascular calcification in patients with chronic kidney disease are less well addressed. Distinct risk factors may contribute synergistically to this elevated cardiovascular risk in this population.
Objectives: We aimed to determine whether echocardiographic left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) affects the risk of major adverse cardiac events (MACE) associated with vascular calcification in end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) patients.

Background/aims: Despite the high efficacy of direct-acting antivirals (DAAs), approximately 1-3% of hepatitis C virus (HCV) patients fail to achieve a sustained virological response. We conducted a nationwide study to investigate risk factors associated with DAA treatment failure. Machine-learning algorithms have been applied to discriminate subjects who may fail to respond to DAA therapy.

Predicting the length of hospital stay for myasthenia gravis (MG) patients is challenging due to the complex pathogenesis, high clinical variability, and non-linear relationships between variables. Considering the management of MG during hospitalization, it is important to conduct a risk assessment to predict the length of hospital stay. The present study aimed to successfully predict the length of hospital stay for MG based on an expandable data mining technique, multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS).

Objectives: This study investigated the potential of combining PTT with dendritic cell (DC)-based immunotherapy and anti-PD-L1 immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) therapy against colorectal cancer and elucidated the underlying mechanisms.
Methods: The CT26 tumour-bearing mice were divided into seven treatment groups: control, atezolizumab (A), dendritic cells (DC), pAuNSs-mediated PTT (PTT), PTT combined with atezolizumab (PTT + A), PTT combined with dendritic cells (PTT + DC), and PTT combined with dendritic cells and atezolizumab (PTT + DC + A). Therapeutic efficacy was monitored.

Carrier screening is important to people have a higher prevalence of severe recessive or X-linked genetic conditions. This study is aimed that the frequency and uncertain nature of genetic variants was identified in Taiwanese population, providing individuals with information at risk of inherited diseases and their heritability to newborns. A total of 480 subjects receiving genetic counseling with no family history of inherited disorders were recruited into a cohort from 2018 to 2022.

Despite advances in therapeutic strategies, lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. Acetylshikonin is a derivative of the traditional Chinese medicine Zicao and presents a variety of anticancer properties. However, the effects of acetylshikonin on lung cancer have not been fully understood yet.

Although retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) tears are common in patients with chronic conditions such as exudative age-related macular degeneration or may occur in response to anti-vascular endothelial growth factor or laser treatment, a spontaneous RPE tear can occur in patients with acute and new-onset bullous central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR). We present a rare case of a healthy young Asian man with unilateral massive subretinal fluid (SRF). An idiopathic acute-onset bullous CSCR with an RPE tear was diagnosed through ancillary examinations.

Background: B cells are essential for providing humoral protection against acute influenza A virus (IAV) infection. FcγRIIB, a regulator of antibody (Ab) production, influences immune responses during pathogen infections, but its specific impact on humoral protection and B cell-mediated responses against IAV remains unclear.
Methods: To investigate FcγRIIB's role in host defense and B cell function during acute IAV infection, we generated mice with systemic FcγRIIB deficiency, functional impairment, and B cell-specific FcγRIIB deletion.

Background: Contrast-induced nephropathy has become increasingly prevalent as the age and prevalence of comorbidities in the general population have increased. Most cases of contrast-induced nephropathy are reversible; however, some may progress to acute kidney disease, and subsequently, to chronic kidney disease. Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) are known for their renoprotective effects.

Life expectancy is likely to be substantially reduced in patients undergoing chronic hemodialysis (CHD). However, machine learning (ML) may predict the risk factors of mortality in patients with CHD by analyzing the serum laboratory data from regular dialysis routine. This study aimed to establish the mortality prediction model of CHD patients by adopting two-stage ML algorithm-based prediction scheme, combined with importance of risk factors identified by different ML methods.

Purpose: Renal cysts are typically a benign condition, and parapelvic cysts are a type of renal cyst that occur adjacent to the renal pelvis or renal sinus. Parapelvic cysts can increase the risk for injury to adjacent organs or urine leakage during laparoscopic surgery. Flexible ureteroscopes with laser assistance were used to make internal incisions in cysts.

Aims: This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of closed-loop stimulation (CLS) pacing compared with the traditional DDD mode in patients with chronotropic incompetence (CI) using bicycle-based cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET).
Methods And Results: This single-centre, randomized crossover trial involved 40 patients with CI. Patients were randomized to receive either DDD-CLS or DDD mode pacing for 2 months, followed by a crossover to the alternative mode for an additional 2 months.

Background: We evaluated a new thymoma prognosis prediction model by combining current staging systems with tumor size.
Methods: The clinical records of thymoma patients in a single center between January 1993 and December 2021 were collected, and data on tumor size and stage and recurrence-free survival (RFS) was obtained. The prediction model was designed by combining staging with tumor size.
Background: Although older patients with atrial fibrillation are at heightened risk of thromboembolic and bleeding events, their optimal treatment choice remains uncertain.
Methods And Results: This meta-analysis was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. We searched the PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases for randomized controlled trials that compared thromboembolic or bleeding outcomes between a direct oral anticoagulant (DOAC) and a vitamin K antagonist (VKA) and reported outcomes for patients aged ≥75 years with atrial fibrillation.

(1) Background: The hippocampus (HP) and amygdala are essential structures in obsessive-compulsive behavior (OCB); however, the specific role of the HP in patients with behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) and OCB remains unclear. (2) Objective: We investigated the alterations of hippocampal and amygdalar volumes in patients with bvFTD and OCB and assessed the correlations of clinical severity with hippocampal subfield and amygdalar nuclei volumes in bvFTD patients with OCB. (3) Materials and methods: Eight bvFTD patients with OCB were recruited and compared with eight age- and sex-matched healthy controls (HCs).

Objective: In patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), epiglottic collapse (EC) constitutes a major factor in the failure of continuous positive airway pressure therapy and uvulopalatopharyngoplasty. This study explored treatments that can improve EC in patients with OSA through drug-induced sleep endoscopy with target-controlled infusion (TCI-DISE).
Study Design: Retrospective cohort study.
