Background: The factors affecting cardiovascular risk associated with vascular calcification in patients with chronic kidney disease are less well addressed. Distinct risk factors may contribute synergistically to this elevated cardiovascular risk in this population.

Objectives: We aimed to determine whether echocardiographic left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) affects the risk of major adverse cardiac events (MACE) associated with vascular calcification in end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) patients.

Artificial intelligence predicts direct-acting antivirals failure among hepatitis C virus patients: A nationwide hepatitis C virus registry program.

Clin Mol Hepatol

January 2024

School of Medicine and Doctoral Program of Clinical and Experimental Medicine, College of Medicine and Center of Excellence for Metabolic Associated Fatty Liver Disease, National Sun Yat-sen University, Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

Background/aims: Despite the high efficacy of direct-acting antivirals (DAAs), approximately 1-3% of hepatitis C virus (HCV) patients fail to achieve a sustained virological response. We conducted a nationwide study to investigate risk factors associated with DAA treatment failure. Machine-learning algorithms have been applied to discriminate subjects who may fail to respond to DAA therapy.

Article Synopsis
  • The Taiwanese government aimed to control a COVID-19 outbreak caused by variant B.1.429 before rolling out a universal vaccination program, focusing on high-risk regions.
  • A study analyzed blood samples from 10,000 donors to check for antibodies against SARS-CoV-2, finding a very low seroprevalence rate of 2 out of 10,000, with no positive cases among 2,000 donors tested for the virus itself.
  • Results indicated that effective epidemic control measures, including contact tracing and isolation, were successful in limiting the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 prior to widespread vaccination efforts.

Predicting the length of hospital stay for myasthenia gravis (MG) patients is challenging due to the complex pathogenesis, high clinical variability, and non-linear relationships between variables. Considering the management of MG during hospitalization, it is important to conduct a risk assessment to predict the length of hospital stay. The present study aimed to successfully predict the length of hospital stay for MG based on an expandable data mining technique, multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS).

Objectives: This study investigated the potential of combining PTT with dendritic cell (DC)-based immunotherapy and anti-PD-L1 immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) therapy against colorectal cancer and elucidated the underlying mechanisms.

Methods: The CT26 tumour-bearing mice were divided into seven treatment groups: control, atezolizumab (A), dendritic cells (DC), pAuNSs-mediated PTT (PTT), PTT combined with atezolizumab (PTT + A), PTT combined with dendritic cells (PTT + DC), and PTT combined with dendritic cells and atezolizumab (PTT + DC + A). Therapeutic efficacy was monitored.

Carrier screening is important to people have a higher prevalence of severe recessive or X-linked genetic conditions. This study is aimed that the frequency and uncertain nature of genetic variants was identified in Taiwanese population, providing individuals with information at risk of inherited diseases and their heritability to newborns. A total of 480 subjects receiving genetic counseling with no family history of inherited disorders were recruited into a cohort from 2018 to 2022.

Article Synopsis
  • Reprocessing GI endoscopes and accessories is crucial for patient safety, yet current practices fail to ensure complete cleanliness, with about 5.4% of duodenoscopes still contaminated.
  • The Digestive Endoscopy Society of Taiwan (DEST) has developed updated standards for endoscopic reprocessing to enhance quality control in GI endoscopy centers.
  • These guidelines offer detailed, step-by-step instructions and recommendations based on comprehensive reviews of existing practices and clinical effectiveness to improve patient safety.

Although retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) tears are common in patients with chronic conditions such as exudative age-related macular degeneration or may occur in response to anti-vascular endothelial growth factor or laser treatment, a spontaneous RPE tear can occur in patients with acute and new-onset bullous central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR). We present a rare case of a healthy young Asian man with unilateral massive subretinal fluid (SRF). An idiopathic acute-onset bullous CSCR with an RPE tear was diagnosed through ancillary examinations.

Background: B cells are essential for providing humoral protection against acute influenza A virus (IAV) infection. FcγRIIB, a regulator of antibody (Ab) production, influences immune responses during pathogen infections, but its specific impact on humoral protection and B cell-mediated responses against IAV remains unclear.

Methods: To investigate FcγRIIB's role in host defense and B cell function during acute IAV infection, we generated mice with systemic FcγRIIB deficiency, functional impairment, and B cell-specific FcγRIIB deletion.

Renal outcomes after contrast exposure in patients with diabetes who use sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors.

Postgrad Med J

February 2024

Division of Cardiology, Department of Internal Medicine, School of Medicine, College of Medicine, Taipei Medical University, Taipei, 110, Taiwan.

Background: Contrast-induced nephropathy has become increasingly prevalent as the age and prevalence of comorbidities in the general population have increased. Most cases of contrast-induced nephropathy are reversible; however, some may progress to acute kidney disease, and subsequently, to chronic kidney disease. Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) are known for their renoprotective effects.

Life expectancy is likely to be substantially reduced in patients undergoing chronic hemodialysis (CHD). However, machine learning (ML) may predict the risk factors of mortality in patients with CHD by analyzing the serum laboratory data from regular dialysis routine. This study aimed to establish the mortality prediction model of CHD patients by adopting two-stage ML algorithm-based prediction scheme, combined with importance of risk factors identified by different ML methods.

Purpose: Renal cysts are typically a benign condition, and parapelvic cysts are a type of renal cyst that occur adjacent to the renal pelvis or renal sinus. Parapelvic cysts can increase the risk for injury to adjacent organs or urine leakage during laparoscopic surgery. Flexible ureteroscopes with laser assistance were used to make internal incisions in cysts.
