The expression of NCAM (CD56), chromogranin A, synaptophysin, c-KIT (CD117) and PDGFRA in normal non-neoplastic skin and basal cell carcinoma (BCC) has rarely been investigated. The author immunohistochemically examined the expression of these molecules in 66 consecutive cases of BCC. In non-tumorous skin, NCAM chromogranin A, synaptophysin, c-KIT and PDGFRA expression was seen in the basal cell of the epidermis.

Histopathologic features and frequency of gall bladder lesions in consecutive 540 cholecystectomies.

The frequency of gall bladder lesions in cholecystectomies is not clear. The purpose of the present study is to report the morphologies and frequency of gall bladder diseases and lesions of 540 cholecystectomies in the last 10 years in our pathology laboratory. The age of patients ranged from 18 years to 93 years with a mean of 64.

Laparoscopic partial hepatectomy of focal nodular hyperplasia.

Focal nodular hyperplasia is a benign liver lesion incidentally discovered with increasing frequency because of the proliferation of imaging studies. Radiographic characterization can diagnose this pathologic lesion and nonoperative therapy is the standard of care. However, surgical resection may be required for diagnostic reasons or symptomatic patients.

Gastrointestinal malignant lymphoma: a pathologic study of 37 cases in a single Japanese institution.

The author reviewed pathologic features of 37 cases of malignant lymphoma in the gastrointestinal organs in the last 10 years in our pathology laboratory. The current WHO classification was adopted. The 37 cases consisted of 20 males and 17 female, and the age ranged from 46 to 89 years with a median of 69 years.

Endometrioid adenocarcinoma of the ovary arising in atypical endometriosis.

Ovarian endometriosis can transform into malignant tumors, and ovarian carcinomas relatively frequently contain foci of endometriosis. In this study, the author reviewed 15 cases of endometrioid adenocarcinoma of the ovary in the last 15 years of our pathology laboratory in search for the presence of endometriosis within the tumor. Six (40%) of the 15 endometrioid adenocarcinoma were found to have endometriosis in the tumor.

Papillary squamous cell carcinoma of the mandibular gingiva.

Papillary squamous cell carcinoma (PSCC) has rarely been reported in the oral cavity. Herein reported is a case of PSCC in the mandibular gum. A 70-year-old man consulted our hospital because of a papillary tumor in the left mandibular gum.

Non-invasive intraductal papillary neoplasms of the common bile duct: a clinicopathologic study of six cases.

Unlabelled: Recently, several studies of intraductal papillary neoplasms (IPN) of the biliary tracts have been reported in the liver, but there have been only one study of them in the common bile duct (CBD). The author reviewed 34 archival pathologic materials of surgically resected specimens containing CBD tumors.

Results: Six cases (18%) of IPN of the CBD were found.

Small cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder.

Primary small cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder is very rare; only several studies have been reported in the English literature. A 62-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital because of hematuria and dysuria. Bladder endoscopy revealed a large polypoid tumor at the bladder base.

Renal cell carcinoma metastatic to the nasal cavity.

Metastatic renal cell carcinoma of the nasal cavity is very rare. A 76-year-old man presented with epistaxis and admitted to our hospital. His past histories were right radical nephrectomy for renal cell carcinomas at the age of 68 years and brain infarction at the age of 75 years.

Hepatocellular carcinoma metastatic to the gingiva as a first manifestation of hepatocellular carcinoma.

A 55-year-old man consulted to our hospital complaining of a gingival tumor. Oral examination showed granulation tissue-like polypoid tumors (2 × 2 × 1 cm) in the left upper gingiva. A clinical diagnosis of granulation tissue was made, and an incisional biopsy was performed.

Squamous cell carcinoma originated from an epidermal cyst.

Epidermal cyst (EC) of the skin is a very common condition. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) very infrequently arises from EC. A 76-year-old Japanese woman was admitted to our hospital because of multiple papules in the nose and nasal cavity.

Seborrheic inclusion cyst of the skin positive for cytoplasmic inclusion bodies and HPV antigen.

Seborrheic inclusion cyst (SIC) is a very rare variant of epidermal cyst of the skin. SIC shows seborrheic keratosis (SK)-like lesion in epidermal cyst. SIC is extremely rare; only 6 case reports have been published in the English literature.

Adenoid squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity.

Because immunohistochemical features of adenoid squamous cell carcinoma (AdSCC) of the oral cavity is unclear, the author reports herein AdSCC in the gingival with an emphasis on immunohistochemical features. A 73-year-old woman presented with a left lower gingival tumor. The tumor was mildly elevated tumor measuring 1.

Projected focal nodular hyperplasia of the liver with pronounced atypical ductular reaction resembling ductal plate and expressing KIT.

A 26-year-old woman was found to have a left abdominal tumor in the space among the hepatic left lobe, stomach and spleen. A laparoscopic examination revealed that the tumor was a projected liver tumor, and resection of the tumor was performed. Grossly, the tumor was not encapsulated and measured 4 cm × 4 cm × 5 cm.

Giant cell tumor of the tendon sheath composed largely of epithelioid histiocytes.

Giant cell tumor of the tendon sheath (GCTTS) is a relatively uncommon lesion. GCTTS composed largely epithelioid histiocytes are very rare. In the literature, the author could not find such cases.

Squamous cell carcinoma arising within verrucous carcinoma of the oral cavity: a case report.

The author herein reports a case of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) arising within verrucous carcinoma (VC) of the hard palate. An 84-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital complaining of oral discomfort. Oral examination revealed a pedunculated verrucous tumor (15 x 15 mm) in the hard palate.

An immunohistochemical and molecular genetic analysis of KIT and PDGFRA in small cell lung carcinoma in Japanese.

KIT and PDGFRA in small cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) have been rarely examined in Japanese. The author investigated protein expression of KIT and PDGFRA in 54 Japanese cases of small cell lung carcinoma by immunohistochemistry, and gene mutations of KIT and PDGFRA in 20 Japanese cases of small cell lung carcinoma by the PCR-direct sequencing method. The molecular genetic analysis showed no mutations of KIT (exons 9, 11, 13, and 17) and PDGFRA (exons 12 and 18) genes in all 20 cases.
