Hydroa vacciniforme (HV) is a rare photodermatosis that mainly affects children and manifests as vesiculopapular eruptions in sun-exposed areas without systemic symptoms. HV-like lymphoma (HVLL) is one of the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated lymphoproliferative disorders (LPD) of childhood. Its diagnosis is based on monoclonal T-cell proliferation; however, its degree of malignancy is controversial owing to its variable prognosis.

The author herein reports a case of multiple verrucous carcinomas (VCs) of the left lower gingiva. A 78-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of gingival tumor. A biopsy revealed severe dysplasia.

We describe an unusual case of a 73-year-old woman presenting with a solitary splenic mass 8 cm in diameter and an elevation of serum soluble interleukin-2 receptor level. The preoperative diagnosis was primary malignant lymphoma of the spleen. Splenectomy was conducted.

Proximal supination osteotomy of the first metatarsal for hallux valgus.

Background: Risk factors for hallux valgus recurrence include postoperative round-shaped lateral edge of the first metatarsal head and postoperative incomplete reduction of the sesamoids. Efficacy of short-term prednisolone treatment in patients with chronic eosinophilic pneumonia.

In patients with chronic eosinophilic pneumonia (CEP), dramatic improvements are seen in response to corticosteroid therapy; however, relapse is common after treatment has ceased. The optimal duration of corticosteroid therapy remains unclear. In a randomised, open-label, parallel group study, eligible patients with CEP received oral prednisolone for either 3 months (3-month group) or 6 months (6-month group), followed by 2 years observation.

Background: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is one of the most common causes of chronic cough and often coexists with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD); however, it is unknown whether there are differences in the effect of GERD on these diseases. Accelerometry-based gait analysis predicts falls among patients with a recent fracture who are ambulatory: a 1-year prospective study.

The aim of this prospective study was to assess whether accelerometry-based gait analysis is associated with the incidence of falls among individuals who are ambulatory and recently had a fracture, and to compare the ability to discriminate body function and structure and activity measures. A total of 100 patients who fulfilled our inclusion criteria were enrolled. At hospital discharge, the following outcomes were assessed: timed-up-and-go test, five-times-sit-to-stand test, one-leg standing test, 5-m gait test, and gait analysis using a wireless three-axis accelerometer.

Stem cells in the development and differentiation of the human adrenal glands.

There are no studies on stem cells (SCs) and development and differentiation (DD) of the human adrenal glands. The SCs in DD of the adrenal glands were herein investigated histochemically and immunohistochemically in 18 human embryonic adrenal glands at gestational week (GW) 7-40. At 7 GW, the adrenal glands were present, and at 7 GW, numerous embryonic SCs (ESCs) are seen to create the adrenal cortex.

Extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT lymphoma) occurring in inflammatory bowel diseases, including ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease, has been reported, although it is extremely rare. Primary small cell carcinoma of the prostate is extremely rare. Herein reported is a case of primary small cell carcinoma of the prostate with immunohistochemical examination of KIT and platelet-derived growth factor-α. The present case is unique in that the small cell carcinoma did not express neuroendocrine antigens.
