Intradural anterior transpetrosal approach.

The standard anterior transpetrosal approach (ATPA) for petroclival lesions is fundamentally an epidural approach and has been practiced for many decades quite successfully. However, this approach has some disadvantages, such as epidural venous bleeding around foramen ovale. We describe here our experience with a modified technique for anterior petrosectomy via an intradural approach that overcomes these disadvantages.

Maintenance therapy with pemetrexed and bevacizumab versus pemetrexed monotherapy after induction therapy with carboplatin, pemetrexed, and bevacizumab in patients with advanced non-squamous non small cell lung cancer.

Objectives: Single agent maintenance therapy is widely accepted for advanced non-squamous non small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, there is no consensus on the initial and maintenance phase regimens, and the clinical benefit of adding bevacizumab to cytotoxic drugs in the maintenance phase remains unclear.

Methods: Chemotherapy-naïve patients with non-squamous NSCLC were randomly assigned to maintenance therapy with pemetrexed and bevacizumab or pemetrexed alone, after achieving disease control after four cycles of induction therapy with carboplatin (area under the curve = 6), pemetrexed (500 mg/m(2)), and bevacizumab (15 mg/kg).

Combination Protocol of Low-Frequency rTMS and Intensive Occupational Therapy for Post-stroke Upper Limb Hemiparesis: a 6-year Experience of More Than 1700 Japanese Patients.

Several years ago, we proposed a combination protocol of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and intensive occupational therapy (OT) for upper limb hemiparesis after stroke. Subsequently, the number of patients treated with the protocol has increased in Japan. We aimed to present the latest data on our proposed combination protocol for post-stroke upper limb hemiparesis as a result of a multi-institutional study.

[Cases of Obstructive Colon Cancer for Which Elective Surgery Was Performed after Colonic Stent Placement].

The present study investigated the short-term outcomes of 20 patients with obstructive colon cancer who underwent colonic stent placement as a bridge to surgery (BTS) during the 3-year period between April 2012 and March 2015. Subjects comprised 13 men and 7 women, with a mean age of 68.3 years.

[Case Report of a Splenic Abscess Due to Colon Cancer].

The patient was a 63-year-old man with a chief complaint of fever and abdominal pain. He was admitted with the diagnosis of splenic abscess on enhanced abdominal computed tomography. After improvement of general condition, we planned a colonoscopy.

Gamma Knife surgery for patients with jugular foramen schwannomas: a multiinstitutional retrospective study in Japan.

OBJECTIVE This study aimed to explore the efficacy and safety of stereotactic radiosurgery in patients with jugular foramen schwannomas (JFSs). METHODS This study was a multiinstitutional retrospective analysis of 117 patients with JFSs who were treated with Gamma Knife surgery (GKS) at 18 medical centers of the Japan Leksell Gamma Knife Society. The median age of the patients was 53 years.

A lot of diseases, including lupus profundus, morphea, lipodystrophy, and Parry-Romberg syndrome, may manifest progressive hemifacial atrophy. These diseases usually progress slowly and rapid progression of atrophy is extremely rare. We report a case of elderly-onset rapid progression of hemifacial atrophy only in three weeks.

[Stage IV Gastric Cancer Made Resectable Following a Chemotherapy Regimen That Included Trastuzumab-A Case Report].

A 70-year-old man was referred to our hospital after anemia was identified by his general practitioner. A detailed examination led to the diagnosis of unresectable StageIV gastric cancer with metastasis to the paraaortic lymph nodes. The cancer was HER2-positive; therefore, the patient was administered trastuzumab, capecitabine, and cisplatin combination therapy.

Effectiveness of Trivalent Inactivated Influenza Vaccine in Children Estimated by a Test-Negative Case-Control Design Study Based on Influenza Rapid Diagnostic Test Results.

We assessed vaccine effectiveness (VE) against medically attended, laboratory-confirmed influenza in children 6 months to 15 years of age in 22 hospitals in Japan during the 2013-14 season. Our study was conducted according to a test-negative case-control design based on influenza rapid diagnostic test (IRDT) results. Outpatients who came to our clinics with a fever of 38 °C or over and had undergone an IRDT were enrolled in this study.

Surgical reduction and ligament reconstruction for chronic dorsal dislocation of the lesser metatarsophalangeal joint associated with hallux valgus.

Background: Hallux valgus (HV) is occasionally associated with chronic dislocation of the lesser metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joints. We have developed a novel surgical procedure to treat dislocation of the lesser MTP joints. This study aimed to describe our procedure and investigate the outcomes of surgical intervention in the treatment of HV with dislocation of the lesser MTP joints.

Radiosurgery for symptomatic cavernous malformations: A multi-institutional retrospective study in Japan.
