Prostate cancer is the most common genitourinary cancer in men. Population-based serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing is used to screen men for the early detection of asymptomatic prostate cancer. The present study compared the features of patients with prostate cancer in Kusatsu City, the only municipality in Shiga Prefecture of Japan to implement organized PSA screening, with those in other municipalities.

Objectives: The pathology of de Quervain's disease affects the tenosynovium and rarely the tendons. The ultrasonographic features of de Quervain's disease unresponsive to conservative treatment are unknown. The purpose of this study was to describe and compare the morphological differences between patients with de Quervain's disease that is refractory to conservative treatment and patients who respond to conservative treatment.

Objectives: Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) is important for the detection of curable gastric cancer (GC). However, there are no appropriate surveillance data during routine endoscopic inspections. This study aimed to clarify the risk factors of pT1b or deeper GC detection during surveillance endoscopy.

Background: Many surgeons have encountered patients who could not immediately undergo surgery to treat spinal fractures because they had associated injuries and/or because a complete diagnosis was delayed. For such patients, practitioners might assume that delays could mean that the eventual reduction would be insufficient. However, no report covered risk factors for insufficient reduction of fractured vertebra including duration from injury onset to surgery.

Background: Coagulopathy is often observed in severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI), and hyperfibrinolysis (HF) is associated with a poor prognosis. Although the efficacy of fibrinogen concentrate (FC) in multiple trauma has been reported, its efficacy in sTBI is unclear. Therefore, we delineated severe HF risk factors despite fresh frozen plasma transfusion.

Background: Topoisomerase is an essential enzyme for deoxyribonucleic acid replication, and its inhibitors suppress tumor progression. Amrubicin, a topoisomerase II inhibitor, is mainly used in the second-line treatment of patients with extensive-stage small cell lung cancer (ES-SCLC). However, the impact of different types of topoisomerase inhibitors for first-line chemotherapy on the efficacy of amrubicin remains unclear.

Although traumatic cervical spine injuries in older adults are commonly caused by minor traumas, such as ground-level falls, their prognosis is often unfavorable. Studies examining the clinical characteristics of cervical spine injuries in older adults according to the external cause of injury are lacking. This study included 1512 patients of ≥ 65 years of age with traumatic cervical spine injuries registered in a Japanese nationwide multicenter database.

Introduction: The use of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) with chemotherapy has increased the survival of patients with advanced NSCLC. Nevertheless, the efficacy of ICI treatment for NSCLC with mutations is limited. Previous studies have not evaluated the efficacy of ICI treatment after osimertinib treatment in real-world settings.

Introduction: In elderly patients with cervical spinal cord injury, comorbidities such as cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases are common, with frequent administration of antiplatelet/anticoagulant (APAC) drugs. Such patients may bleed easily or unexpectedly during surgery despite prior withdrawal of APAC medication. Few reports have examined the precise relationship between intraoperative blood loss and history of APAC use regarding surgery for cervical spine injury in the elderly.

Background: The 1-year mortality and functional prognoses of patients who received surgery for cervical trauma in the elderly remains unclear. The aim of this study is to investigate the rates of, and factors associated with mortality and the deterioration in walking capacity occurring 1 year after spinal fusion surgery for cervical fractures in patients 65 years of age or older.
Methods: Three hundred thirteen patients aged 65 years or more with a traumatic cervical fracture who received spinal fusion surgery were enrolled.

Objective: The management of cervical spine injuries in the elderly is often complicated by the presence of multiple medical comorbidities, and it is not uncommon for preoperative testing to reveal other conditions that require the postponement of surgery. However, the factors that affect the waiting time from injury to surgery have not been clarified. The purpose of this multicenter database study was to analyze the clinical features and identify the factors affecting the number of days waited between injury and surgery in elderly patients with a cervical spine injury.

Therefore, multiple devices, such as baskets or balloon catheters, are frequently used in such cases. However, it is desirable to use a single device for stone extraction from the perspective of cost-effectiveness.

No predictive clinical risk scores for net adverse clinical events (NACE) have been developed for patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). We evaluated NACE to develop clinically applicable risk-stratification scores in the Bleeding and thrombotic risk evaluation In patients With Atrial fibrillation under COronary intervention (BIWACO) study, a multicenter survey which has enrolled a total of 7837 patients. We also investigated the current status and time trends for the use of antithrombotic drugs.

Background: Gastric wall abscess (GWA) itself is a rare clinicopathological condition, and there has been no report of primary gastric cancer complicated by GWA. Herein, we present a case of advanced gastric cancer with intramural abscess, which was successfully treated with curative gastrectomy.
Case Report: A 77-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital for dull epigastric pain with inflammatory findings and diagnosed with advanced gastric cancer (cT4aN1M0 Stage III) with intramural abscess.
Aim: To examine the trends in the management of patients with diabetes over an 18-year period in Japan.
Participants And Methods: We recorded the height, body mass, laboratory data, diabetes treatment, and screening status of diabetic complications from the data collected during the Shiga Diabetes Clinical Survey, which has been performed every 6 years since 2000. We then evaluated the management of patients with diabetes in Shiga Prefecture.

Background: String-like mobile echodensities (SLMEs) are sometimes found on postoperative duplex ultrasound (DUS) performed after carotid endarterectomy (CEA); however, they may not be visible on intraoperative DUS. The reasons for these echo findings and associated clinical course remain unknown.
Methods: Routine postoperative DUS evaluation after CEA was retrospectively examined in 101 consecutive patients (107 lesions) who underwent CEA between April 2015 and December 2021, at our institution.

We evaluated the usefulness of two novel cholesterol-triglyceride subgroup (CTS) indices, CTS and CTS, that potentially reflect the metabolic status regarding risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) using a retrospective longitudinal study of the Japanese general population. We recruited 12,373 individuals from the annual users of our healthcare center. Among them, the first onset of CHD was recorded in 131 individuals between April 2014 and March 2020.
