To understand the precise mechanism of the glycoside hydrolase (GH) family 127, a cysteine β-l-arabinofuranosidase (Arafase) - HypBA1 - has been isolated from Bifidobacterium longum in the human Gut microbiota, and the design and synthesis of the mechanism-based inhibitors such as l-Araf-haloacetamides have been carried out. The α-l-Araf-azide derivative was used as the monoglycosylamine equivalent to afford the l-Araf-chloroacetamides (α/β-1-Cl) as well as bromoacetamides (α/β-1-Br) in highly stereoselective manner through Staudinger reaction followed by amide formation with/without anomerization. Against HypBA1, the probes 1, especially in the case of α/β-1-Br inhibited the hydrolysis.

There are 2 plausible origins for the light scattering changes: (i) hemodynamic responses such as changes in blood volume and in density of blood cells and (ii) reorientation of dipoles in cellular membrane. These quinazolinone derivatives are isotopic atropisomers based on -CH/CD discrimination and were revealed to possess a slight optical rotation and high rotational stability.

A precise measurement of the cosmic-ray proton spectrum with the Calorimetric Electron Telescope (CALET) is presented in the energy interval from 50 GeV to 60 TeV, and the observation of a softening of the spectrum above 10 TeV is reported. The analysis is based on the data collected during ∼6.2  years of smooth operations aboard the International Space Station and covers a broader energy range with respect to the previous proton flux measurement by CALET, with an increase of the available statistics by a factor of ∼2.

An unprecedented non-uniform self-folding of artificial polymer chains composed of turn moieties and stretched segments is presented through the design of a set of optically active poly(fluorene-2,7-diylethene-1,2-diyl) (poly(fluorenevinylene)) derivatives bearing a neomenthyl group and a pentyl group attached at the 9-position of fluorene backbone at various ratios. The folded structure is formed and stabilized through inter-chain interactions in the solid state, leading to remarkably enhanced chiroptical properties (chirality amplification) in terms of circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized light (CPL) emission. This phenomenon is rationalized by experimental and theoretical CD and CPL spectral analyses.

In situ MgB superconducting samples were prepared by using the spark plasma sintering method. The density of the obtained bulks was up to 95% of the theoretical value predicted for the material. The structural and microstructural characterizations of the samples were investigated using X-ray diffraction and SEM and correlated to their superconducting properties, in particular their critical current densities, J, which was measured at 20 K.

The cell membrane capacitance (Cm) and characteristic frequencies (fc) of tissues can be obtained using segmental bioelectrical impedance spectroscopy (S-BIS). Higher Cm and lower fc are associated with a larger surface area of skeletal muscle fibers with T-tubules in the tissues. Muscle fiber membrane is one of the major physiological factors that influence surface electromyograms (EMGs) as well as the number of recruited motor units so that the amplitude of surface EMG may be correlated with Cm and fc.
