Background: Although attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is often comorbid with schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders (SZSPD), concerns about an increased risk of psychotic events have limited its treatment with either psychostimulants or atomoxetine.

Aims: To examine whether the risk of hospital admission for psychosis in people with SZSPD was increased during the year following the introduction of such medications compared with the year before.

Method: This was a retrospective cohort study using Quebec (Canada) administrative health registries, including all Quebec residents with a public prescription drug insurance plan and a diagnosis of psychotic disorder, defined by relevant ICD-9 or ICD-10 codes, who initiated either methylphenidate, amphetamines or atomoxetine, between January 2010 and December 2016, in combination with antipsychotic medication.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates whether thrombectomy can prevent no-reflow in STEMI patients undergoing PCI, using data from the TOTAL Trial with 1,800 participants.
  • The findings reveal no significant difference in no-reflow rates between thrombectomy and PCI alone for the total cohort, but a notable reduction in no-reflow among patients who underwent direct stenting.
  • Additionally, those who experienced no-reflow were at a higher risk for severe adverse clinical outcomes within a year, indicating the importance of managing no-reflow events.

Background: The incidence of left ventricular thrombus (LVT) after anterior acute myocardial infarction (AMI) has not been well established in the era of primary percutaneous coronary intervention (pPCI) and potent dual antiplatelet therapy. The objective of this study is to establish the contemporary incidence of LVT in this population, to identify their risk factors, and to examine their association with clinical outcomes.

Methods: A multicenter retrospective cohort study including AMI patients with new-onset antero-apical wall motion abnormalities treated with pPCI between 2009 and 2017 was conducted.

Background And Purpose: The transversus abdominis (TrA) is a key muscle for lumbar stabilization and is often retrained in physical therapy. Feedback tools, such as the pressure biofeedback unit (PBU) and rehabilitative ultrasound imaging (RUSI), are frequently used by physical therapists to train their patients and improve their patients' ability to contract this muscle. However, the effect of these tools in rehabilitating the TrA in older adults remains to be demonstrated, as is their efficiency in transferring the skill of recruiting the TrA from a supine position to a standing position.

Background: Cross-sectional studies of hospital-level administrative data have suggested that 4 nurse staffing practices-using adequate staffing levels, higher proportions of registered nurses (RNs) (skill mix), and more educated and experienced RNs-are each associated with reduced hospital mortality. To increase the validity of this evidence, patient-level longitudinal studies assessing the simultaneous associations of these staffing practices with mortality are required.

Methods: A dynamic cohort of 146,349 adult medical, surgical, and intensive care patients admitted to a Canadian University Health Center was followed for 7 years (2010-2017).

Peanut allergic individuals can be both co-sensitized and co-allergic to peanut and tree nuts. At the moment, standard diagnostic approaches do not always allow differentiation between clinically relevant sensitization and nonsignificant cross-reactions, and the responsibility of each allergen remains unclear. The objective of this study was therefore to determine a peanut sensitization profile in a cohort of Canadian peanut allergic children and assess the immunoglobulin E (IgE) molecular cross-reactivity between peanut, almond, hazelnut and pistachio.

The high metabolic demand of neuronal tissue, coupled with its relatively low energy storage capacity, requires that increases in neuronal activation are quickly matched with increased blood flow to ensure efficient supply of oxygen and nutrients to the tissue. For this to occur, dilation of nearby arterioles must be coordinated with the dilation of larger upstream feeding arteries. As it stands, the exact spatial extent of such dilation in humans is unknown.
