Institute of Systems and Physical Biology, Shenzhen Bay Laboratory, Shenzhen, 518107, China; School of Medicine, Hangzhou City University, Hangzhou, 310015, China; Guoke Ningbo Life Science and Health Industry Research Institute, Ningbo, 315040, China. Electronic address:

T cell therapy for solid tumors faces significant challenges due to the immune off-target attack caused by the loss of tumor surface antigens and inactivation in acidic tumor microenvironment (TME). Herein, we developed a bifunctional immunomodulator (MO@NAL) by loading ovalbumin (OVA; model antigen) mRNA (mOVA) onto lysozyme-coated layered double hydroxide nano-aluminum adjuvant (NA). The NA's inherent alkalinity effectively neutralizes the excess acid within the TME and suppresses regulatory T cells, creating a favorable microenvironment to enhance cytotoxic T cell infiltration and activation in tumors.

Molecular Ferroelectrics for Highly Sensitive Detection Toward Low-Frequency Sound Recognition.

Adv Mater

January 2025

School of Energy, School of Optoelectronic Science and Engineering, School of Biology and Basic Medical Sciences, School of Physical Science and Technology, Soochow University, Suzhou, 215000, P. R. China.

Human hearing cannot sensitively detect sounds below 100 Hz, which can affect the physical well-being and lead to dizziness, headaches, and nausea. Piezoelectric acoustic sensors still lack sensitivity to low-frequency sounds owing to the low piezoelectric coefficient or high elastic modulus of materials. The low elastic modulus and substantial piezoelectric coefficient of molecular ferroelectric materials make them excellent candidates for acoustic sensors.

Pervasive RNA-binding protein enrichment on TAD boundaries regulates TAD organization.

Nucleic Acids Res

January 2025

Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Li Ka Shing Institute of Health Sciences, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong SAR, China.

Mammalian genome is hierarchically organized by CTCF and cohesin through loop extrusion mechanism to facilitate the organization of topologically associating domains (TADs). Mounting evidence suggests additional factors/mechanisms exist to orchestrate TAD formation and maintenance. In this study, we investigate the potential role of RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) in TAD organization.

Biomarkers of ageing (BA) can predict health risks beyond chronological age, but little is known about how marital/living status affects longitudinal changes in BA. We examined the association between marital/living status and BA over time using the-Swedish-Adoption/Twin-Study-of-Aging (SATSA) cohort. Four BAs were analyzed: telomere length (TL) (638 individuals; 1603 measurements), DNAmAge (535 individuals; 1392 measurements), cognition (823 individuals; 3218 measurements), and frailty index (FI) (1828 individuals; 9502 measurements).

Background: The increasing prevalence of myopia among Chinese children and adolescents, especially at younger ages, has emerged as a significant concern in recent years. Pre-myopia is a key period for myopia prevention and control in children and adolescents. Previous studies suggested auricular acupressure (AA) therapy might offer a viable approach to prevent and slow down myopia progression.

Engineered Strategies for Lipid Droplets-Targeted AIEgens Based on Tetraphenylethene.

December 2024

School of Science and Engineering, Shenzhen Institute of Aggregate Science and Technology, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen 518172, China.

Lipid droplets (LDs), once regarded as inert fat particles, have been ignored by scientific researchers for a long time. Now, studies have shown that LDs are dynamic organelles used to store neutral lipids in cells and maintain cell stability. The abnormality of intracellular LDs usually causes metabolic disorders in the body, such as obesity, atherosclerosis, diabetes, and cancer, so the LDs have attracted wide attention.

Background/objectives: A-kinase-interacting protein 1 (AKIP1) has been discovered to be a pivotal signaling adaptor in the regulation of human labor and associated with preterm birth, but its effect on fetal growth was still unclear. Meanwhile, the regulation role of DNA methylation (DNAm) on placental and fetal development has been demonstrated. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the association of DNAm in maternal peripheral blood with placental development and full-term small for gestational age (FT-SGA) neonates, and to explore whether placenta mediate the association between DNAm and FT-SGA; Methods: This study was a case-control study including 84 FT-SGAs and 84 FT-AGAs derived from the Shenzhen Birth Cohort Study.

Missing pieces in the puzzle of ecology of microbial arsenate reduction.

J Hazard Mater

December 2024

Guangdong Key Laboratory of Integrated Agro-environmental Pollution Control and Management, Institute of Eco-environmental and Soil Sciences, National-Regional Joint Engineering Research Center for Soil Pollution Control and Remediation in South China, Guangdong Academy of Sciences, Guangzhou 510650, China.

Arsenic pollution and its associated health risks have raised widespread concern. Under anaerobic conditions, arsenic mobility and toxicity increase when arsenate [As(V)] is reduced to arsenite [As(III)] by microbes through the cytoplasmic and dissimilatory pathways. However, the relative importance of these two pathways in the environment remains unclear, restricting our ability to effectively predict and regulate the environmental behavior of arsenic.

FHIT is a fragile site tumor suppressor that is primarily inactivated upon tobacco smoking. FHIT loss is frequently observed in lung cancer, making it an important biomarker for the development of targeted therapy for lung cancer. Here, we report that inhibitors of glycogen synthase kinase 3 beta (GSK3β) and the homologous recombination DNA repair (HRR) pathway are synthetic lethal with FHIT loss in lung cancer.
