Background: Substantial studies have demonstrated that oxidative stress placenta and endothelial injury are considered to inextricably critical events in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia (PE). Systemic inflammatory response and endothelial dysfunction are induced by the circulating factors released from oxidative stress placentae. As a novel biomarker of oxidative stress, advanced oxidation protein products (AOPPs) levels are strongly correlated with PE characteristics.

Analysis of a National Institutes of Health (NIH) trial shows that cigarette smoking protected tissue plasminogen activator (tPA)-treated patients from hemorrhage transformation (HT); however, the underlying mechanism is not clear. Damage to the integrity of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) is the pathological basis of HT. Here, we investigated the molecular events of BBB damage after acute ischemic stroke (AIS) using in vitro oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) and in vivo mice middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) models.

Placenta plays essential role in successful pregnancy, as the most important organ connecting and interplaying between mother and fetus. However, the cellular characteristics and molecular interaction of cell populations within the fetomaternal interface is still poorly understood. Here, we surveyed the single-cell transcriptomic landscape of human full-term placenta and revealed the heterogeneity of cytotrophoblast cell (CTB) and stromal cell (STR) with the fetal/maternal origin consecutively localized from fetal section (FS), middle section (Mid_S) to maternal section (Mat_S) of maternal-fetal interface.

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is a highly aggressive brain tumor with an extremely low survival rate. New and effective approaches for treatment are therefore urgently needed. Here, we successfully developed M1-like macrophage-derived extracellular vesicles (M1EVs) that overcome multiple challenges via guidance from two macrophage-related observations in clinical specimens from GBM patients: enrichment of M2 macrophages in GBM; and origination of a majority of infiltrating macrophage from peripheral blood.

The only food and drug administration (FDA)-approved drug currently available for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke is tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), yet the therapeutic benefits of this drug are partially outweighed by the increased risk of hemorrhagic transformation (HT). Analysis of the NIH trial has shown that cigarette smoking protected tPA-treated patients from HT; however, the underlying mechanism is not clear. Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChR) has shown anti-inflammatory effect and modulation nAChR could be a strategy to reduce ischemia/reperfusion-induced blood-brain barrier (BBB) damage.

Background: With an incidence of less than 1% among astrocytomas, pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma (PXA) is rare. When its mitotic activity exceeds 5 mitoses/10 high-power fields, PXA is defined as anaplastic pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma (APXA). This report documents the clinical manifestations and histopathological characteristics of APXA to help prevent future misdiagnoses.

Aims: The canonical Wnt signaling pathway plays an essential role in blood-brain barrier integrity and intracerebral hemorrhage in preclinical stroke models. Here, we sought to explore the association between canonical Wnt signaling and hemorrhagic transformation (HT) following intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients as well as to determine the underlying cellular mechanisms.
Methods: 355 consecutive AIS patients receiving IVT were included.

Ischemic stroke often causes motor and cognitive deficits. Deregulated glia gap junction communication, which is reflected by increased protein levels of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and connexin 43 (Cx43), has been observed in ischemic hippocampus and has been associated with cognitive impairment in animal stroke models. Here, we tested the hypothesis that reactive astrocytes-mediated loss of synaptophysin (SYP) and CREB-regulated transcription coactivator 1 (CRTC1) contribute to dysfunction in glia gap junction communication and memory impairment after ischemic stroke.

Aggregated amyloid-β protein (Aβ) and Aβ-induced neuronal apoptosis have been implicated as critical factors in the pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Certain preclinical results have indicated that the increased accumulation of protein aggregates in AD-affected neurons activates the unfolded protein response (UPR), a pathological phenomenon, which predominantly mediates the aberrant endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and apoptotic cascades in neuronal cells. In the present study, we confirmed that Santacruzamate A (STA, a natural product isolated from a Panamanian marine cyanobacterium) attenuates Aβ protein fragment 25-35 (Aβ)-induced toxicity in PC12 cells and rescues cognitive deficits in APPswe/PS1dE9 mice by enhancing ER stress tolerance.

The efficacy of neurofeedback is a point of great controversy, because a certain proportion of users cannot properly regulate their brain activities and thereby fail to benefit from neurofeedback. To address the neurofeedback inefficacy problem, the present study is aimed to design and implement a new neurofeedback system that can more effectively and consistently regulate users' brain activities than the conventional way of training users to voluntarily regulate brain activities. The new neurofeedback system delivers external visual stimuli continuously at a specific alpha phase, which is real-time decoded from ongoing alpha wave, to regulate the alpha wave.

Background: Investigating cell fate decision and subpopulation specification in the context of the neural lineage is fundamental to understanding neurogenesis and neurodegenerative diseases. The differentiation process of neural-tube-like rosettes in vitro is representative of neural tube structures, which are composed of radially organized, columnar epithelial cells and give rise to functional neural cells. However, the underlying regulatory network of cell fate commitment during early neural differentiation remains elusive.
