Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory oral disease that affects nearly 50% of all adults. () is known to be involved in the formation and development of periodontitis. Outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) harboring toxic bacterial components are continuously released during growth and regulate the extent of the inflammatory response by controlling the functions of immune and non-immune cells in tissues.

Ancestry informative markers (AIMs) are useful to infer individual biogeographical ancestry and to estimate admixture proportions of admixed populations or individuals. Although a growing number of AIM panels for forensic ancestry origin analyses were developed, they may not efficiently infer the ancestry origins of most populations in China. In this study, a set of 52 ancestry informative deletion/insertion polymorphisms (AIDIPs) were selected with the aim of effectively differentiate continental and partial Chinese populations.

Human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUCMSCs) are attractive therapeutic cells for tissue engineering to treat bone defects. However, how the cells can differentiate into bone remains unclear. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are non-coding RNAs that participate in many biological processes, including stem cell differentiation.

Chlorhexidine (CHX) is considered to be the gold standard for dental caries prevention and is widely applied in dental practice. However, the long-term application of CHX may result in CHX-resistance in oral pathogens. The aim of this study was to investigate whether long-term use of CHX causes resistance in Streptococcus mutans and to explore the possible associated mechanisms.

Backgroud: The mechanism implicated in the osteogenesis of human periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) has been investigated for years. Previous genomics data analyses showed that long noncoding RNA (lncRNA), microRNA (miRNA) and messenger RNA (mRNA) have significant expression differences between induced and control human PDLSCs. Competing for endogenous RNAs (ceRNA), as a widely studied mechanism in regenerative medicine, while rarely reported in periodontal regeneration.

Oral cancer is the most common malignant tumor in the oral and maxillofacial region, of which more than 90% is squamous cell carcinoma. The incidence of oral cancer is on the rise worldwide. An imbalance between the microorganism composition and its host may lead to the occurrence of oral malignant tumors.

Stem cells maintain a subtle balance between self-renewal and differentiation under the regulatory network supported by both intracellular and extracellular components. Proteoglycans are large glycoproteins present abundantly on the cell surface and in the extracellular matrix where they play pivotal roles in facilitating signaling transduction and maintaining stem cell homeostasis. In this review, we outline distinct proteoglycans profiles and their functions in the regulation of stem cell homeostasis, as well as recent progress and prospects of utilizing proteoglycans/glycosaminoglycans as a novel glycomics carrier or bio-active molecules in bone regeneration.

Punicalagin, a major ellagitannin isolated from pomegranate, is proved to have various pharmacological activities with an undefined therapy mechanism. The objective of this research was to demonstrate the effect of punicalagin on anti-inflammatory and angiogenic activation in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and their potential mechanisms. Endothelial-leukocyte adhesion assay was applied to evaluate primary cultures of HUVECs activation following tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) treatment.

Objective: To explore the role of cathepsin K (CTSK) regulated by mir-30a-wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway in cementogenic differentiation of periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs).
Methods: Human PDLSCs isolated by limiting dilution culture were induced by enamel matrix protein derivative (EMD) for differentiation into cementoblast-like cells. MicroRNA chip technique was employed to screen the differentially expressed microRNAs in the cells during induced differentiation.

Background: Mutations of the Ectodysplasin-A (EDA) gene are generally associated with syndrome hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia or nonsyndromic tooth agenesis. The influence of EDA mutations on dentinogenesis and odontoblast differentiation has not been reported. The aim of this study was to identify genetic clues for the causes of familial nonsyndromic oligodontia and explore the underlying mechanisms involved, while focusing on the role of human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs).

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have become a promising tool for neurorestorative therapy of neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs), which are mainly characterized by the progressive and irreversible loss of neuronal structure and function in the central or peripheral nervous system. Recently, studies have reported that genetic manipulation mediated by noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) can increase survival and neural regeneration of transplanted MSCs, offering a new strategy for clinical translation. In this review, we summarize the potential role and regulatory mechanism of two major types of ncRNAs, including microRNAs (miRNAs) and long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs), during the neurogenesis of MSCs with gene expression profile analyses.

Dental pulp stem cell (DPSC) transplantation has shown new prospects in dental pulp regeneration, and is of great significance in the treatment of pulpitis and pulp necrosis. The fate and regenerative potential of stem cells are dependent, to a great extent, on their microenvironment, which is composed of various tissue components, cell populations, and soluble factors. N-cadherin-mediated cell-cell interaction has been implicated as an important factor in controlling the cell-fate commitment of mesenchymal stem cells.
