Exploring the potential association between serum selenium and hypertension in obese adult males in the United States.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Department of Gastroenterology of Shenzhen Second People's Hospital, Health Science Center, Shenzhen Second People's Hospital, The First Affiliated Hospital of Shenzhen University, Shenzhen, 518035, People's Republic of China.

Previous studies on the correlation between serum selenium and hypertension have yielded inconsistent results. Our previous analysis of participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2018 indicated that elevated serum selenium concentrations were associated with an increased risk of metabolic abnormalities in obese individuals, with the primary effect being on blood pressure in males. The aim of this study was to further elucidate the relationship between serum selenium and the risk of hypertension in obese males.

PIKFYVE deficiency induces vacuole-like cataract via perturbing late endosome homeostasis.

Biochem Biophys Res Commun

February 2025

Department of Ophthalmology, Shenzhen People's Hospital (The Second Clinical Medical College, Jinan University, The First Affiliated Hospital, Southern University of Science and Technology), Shenzhen, China. Electronic address:

Phosphoinositide kinase, FYVE-type zinc finger containing (PIKFYVE) was recently identified as a causative gene for cataract. Pikfyve phosphatidylinositol phosphate kinase domain-deficient (pikfyve) zebrafish lens and PIKFYVE-inhibited human lens epithelial cells developed vacuoles, colocalized with late endosome marker RAB7. In this study, the pikfyvezebrafish with vacuole-like cataract underwent transcriptomic and proteomic analyses to explore the underlying mechanisms of vacuole formation.

The activation of acid-sensing ion channel 1a (ASIC1a) in response to extracellular acidification leads to an increase in extracellular calcium influx, thereby exacerbating the degeneration of articular chondrocytes in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). It has been suggested that the inhibition of extracellular calcium influx could potentially impede chondrocyte ferroptosis. The cystine transporter, solute carrier family 7 member 11 (SLC7A11), is recognized as a key regulator of ferroptosis.

Single-cell transcriptomic analysis of chondrocytes in cartilage and pathogenesis of osteoarthritis.

Genes Dis

March 2025

CAS Key Laboratory of Computational Biology, Shanghai Institute of Nutrition and Health, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai 200031, China.

Chondrocyte is considered the only cell type in cartilage. However, the cell heterogeneity of chondrocytes in human articular cartilage is still not well defined, which hinders our understanding of the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis (OA). Here, we constructed a single-cell transcriptomic atlas of chondrocytes in healthy cartilage and identified nine chondrocyte subsets including homeostatic chondrocytes, proliferate fibrochondrocytes, and hypertrophic chondrocytes (HTC).

Article Synopsis
  • Mitochondrial dysfunction leads to chondrocyte aging, contributing to osteoarthritis (OA) and it remains uncertain if mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) can help restore mitochondrial function in chondrocytes or reverse OA progression.
  • The study utilized mitochondria-rich extracellular vesicles (MEV) from stem cells to determine their impact on both healthy and stressed human articular chondrocytes in vitro, and further tested their effects in OA rats.
  • Findings revealed that MEV could enter chondrocytes, reduce oxidative stress markers, enhance mitochondrial function, and effectively reduce cartilage degeneration in OA rats, suggesting a potential therapeutic approach for OA management.

  • Autophagy is an essential process for cellular degradation and recycling, impacting cancer development and progression, but there's a lack of comprehensive assessments of its related genes (ATGs) across different cancers.
  • A pan-cancer analysis revealed that 3-32% of ATGs differ in expression among 21 types of human cancer, and an autophagy-related score (ATS) may help predict patient prognosis in 11 cancers, supported by various datasets.
  • The study showed that autophagy affects the tumor immune environment and can enhance clinical outcomes by improving interactions between immune cells, while also correlating with drug sensitivity, highlighting its potential in cancer treatment and prognosis.

Glioma is recognized as one of the most lethal and aggressive brain tumors. Although the standard-of-care treatment for glioblastoma (GBM) involves maximal surgical resection and temozolomide (TMZ) chemotherapy, the discovery of novel anti-tumor agents from nature sources is an effective strategy for glioma treatment. In this study, we conducted a screening process to identify the bisindole alkaloid melodinine J (MDJ) from Melodinus tenuicaudatus.

Achieving Photocatalytic Overall Nitrogen Fixation via an Enzymatic Pathway on a Distorted CoP Configuration.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

December 2024

State Key Laboratory of Catalysis, Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Dalian National Laboratory for Clean Energy, Dalian, 116023, China.

Photocatalytic nitrogen (N) fixation over semiconductors has always suffered from poor conversion efficiency owing to weak N adsorption and the difficulty of N≡N triple bond dissociation. Herein, a Co single-atom catalyst (SAC) model with a C-defect-evoked CoP distorted configuration was fabricated using a selective phosphidation strategy, wherein P-doping and C defects co-regulate the local electronic structure of Co sites. Comprehensive experiments and theoretical calculations revealed that the distorted CoP configuration caused a strong charge redistribution between the Co atoms and adjacent C atoms, minimizing their electronegativity difference.
