Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the most common gastrointestinal malignancy, with its recurrence and metastasis significantly affecting patient survival. Circular RNAs (circRNAs), a novel class of noncoding RNAs, have emerged as crucial contributors to CRC pathogenesis. However, the role of circEIF3I in CRC metastasis remains unclear.

It's well known that sex is a risk factor for the occurrence of adverse events (AEs), most of which have found sex differences. Real-world data studies on the sex differences of fall-risk-increasing drugs (FRIDs) are few and far between, with most small-scale retrospective studies based on FRID classes. To establish a list of FRIDs and describe their sex differences, we used preferred terms from the Medical Dictionary for Regulatory Activities to search for AEs in the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS), and then perform disproportionality analyses and female/male ratio analyses.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the role of myelin-associated glycoprotein (MAG) in the effects of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) on Alzheimer's disease progression in a specific mouse model (APP-PS1 transgenic mice).
  • The findings suggest that increased levels of MAG are linked to the beneficial impacts of omega-3 fatty acids, indicating a potential protective mechanism against Alzheimer's-related degeneration.
  • These results may offer insights into new dietary or therapeutic strategies for mitigating Alzheimer's disease symptoms through nutritional intervention.

Background: Recurrent miscarriage (RM) is influenced by immune factors, particularly regulatory T cells, which can impact immune function and miscarriage risk. Vitamin D (VD) is known to regulate the immune system, potentially improving pregnancy outcomes in RM patients. This study aims to assess the effect of VD adjuvant therapy on regulatory T cells and pregnancy outcomes in RM patients.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive behavioral and cognitive impairments. Despite growing evidence of the neuroprotective action of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), the effects and mechanism of omega-3 PUFAs on AD control are yet to be clarified. By crossing male heterozygous fat-1 mice with female APP/PS1 mice, we assessed whether elevated tissue omega-3 PUFA levels could alleviate AD progression and their underlying mechanism among the offspring WT, APP/PS1 and APP/PS1 × fat-1 groups at various stages.

Relationship between asymmetry of transverse sinus and difference in intraocular pressure Based on MRV imaging examination.

SLAS Technol

December 2024

Department of Neuroelectrophysiology, Changde Hospital, Xiangya School of Medicine, Central South University, 415003 Hunan, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Transverse sinus asymmetry refers to variations in the shape, size, or blood flow of a key brain vessel, potentially linked to differences in eye pressure (intraocular pressure, IOP) between the two eyes.
  • A study measured IOP in patients with transverse sinus asymmetry, revealing significant differences in eye pressures and a negative correlation with right eye pressure and the variance in pressures between both eyes.
  • The findings suggest that when one transverse sinus is thicker, it may lead to lower IOP on that side, indicating a relationship between the structure of the transverse sinus and eye pressure differences.

Int J Nanomedicine

June 2024

Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Nanozymes and Translational Cancer Research, Department of Otolaryngology, Shenzhen Institute of Translational Medicine, The First Affiliated Hospital of Shenzhen University, Shenzhen Second People's Hospital, Shenzhen, 518035, People's Republic of China.

The tumor microenvironment (TME) is a complex and dynamic entity, comprising stromal cells, immune cells, blood vessels and extracellular matrix, which is intimately associated with the occurrence and development of cancers, as well as their therapy. Utilizing the shared characteristics of tumors, such as an acidic environment, enzymes and hypoxia, researchers have developed a promising cancer therapy strategy known as responsive release of nano-loaded drugs, specifically targeted at tumor tissues or cells. In this comprehensive review, we provide an in-depth overview of the current fundamentals and state-of-the-art intelligent strategies of TME-responsive nanoplatforms, which include acidic pH, high GSH levels, high-level adenosine triphosphate, overexpressed enzymes, hypoxia and reductive environment.

Background: Pulmonary infections are significant global health burdens, and conventional diagnostic methods (culture and polymerase chain reaction), are often limited by slow results and low sensitivity. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) offers a rapid, comprehensive alternative for identifying diverse pathogens, including rare and mixed infections. Thus, we assessed the diagnostic performance of mNGS in pulmonary infections, compared the findings with those of traditional pathogen detection methods, and explored its potential to enhance clinical diagnostics and patient care.

NK/T-cell lymphoma (NKTCL) is a highly aggressive malignant tumour with a very poor prognosis, which often poses diagnostic difficulties due to the non-specificity of its clinical presentation. NK/T-cell lymphoma with eosinophilic hyperplasia syndrome is extremely rare. This article describes a patient with NKTCL misdiagnosed as vasculitis who presented with sinusitis, abdominal pain, anorexia, and lung shadows.

Serum betaine and dimethylglycine in mid-pregnancy and the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus: a case-control study.

Endocrine

August 2024

Department of Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health, School of Public Health, Anhui Medical University, Hefei, Anhui Province, China.

Purpose: To investigate the associations of choline, betaine, dimethylglycine (DMG), L-carnitine, and Trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) with the risk of Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) as well as the markers of glucose homeostasis.

Methods: We performed a case-control study including 200 diagnosed GDM cases and 200 controls matched by maternal age (±2 years) and gestational age (±2 weeks). Concentrations of serum metabolites were measured by the high-performance liquid chromatography - tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS).

BACKGROUND Hyperparathyroidism is a common issue in patients on long-term hemodialysis, necessitating parathyroidectomy with deep venipuncture. These patients frequently exhibit a heightened incidence of vascular calcification, complicating deep venipuncture and increasing the risk of associated complications. Therefore, a crucial aspect of preoperative assessment in this population involves identifying vascular calcification, with a preference for ultrasound-guided intraplane puncture.

Introduction: Early stable deep molecular response (DMR) to nilotinib is associated with goal of treatment-free remission (TFR) in patients with chronic-phase chronic myeloid leukemia (CML-CP). It is important to early distinguish between patients who can achieve a DMR and those who are fit for TFR.

Methods: We performed a multicenter study to explore the early cumulative MR rate at 18 months with nilotinib in patients with newly diagnosed CML-CP (ND-CML-CP) in China.

There is a crosstalk between Tumor-associated macrophages (TAM) and tumor-infiltrating T cells in tumor environment. TAM could inhibit the activity of cytotoxic T cells; TAM could also regulate the composition of T cells in tumor immune environment. The combination therapy for TAM and tumor infiltrated T cells has been widely noticed, but the crosstalk between TAM and tumor infiltrated T cells remains unclear in the process of combination therapy.
