J Nanobiotechnology

July 2024

Department of Orthopedics, Shenzhen Second People's Hospital, The First Affiliated Hospital of Shenzhen University, Shenzhen, 518035, China.

Messenger RNA (mRNA) has emerged as a promising therapeutic molecule with numerous clinical applications in treating central nervous system disorders, tumors, COVID-19, and other diseases. mRNA therapies must be encapsulated into safe, stable, and effective delivery vehicles to preserve the cargo from degradation and prevent immunogenicity. Exosomes have gained growing attention in mRNA delivery because of their good biocompatibility, low immunogenicity, small size, unique capacity to traverse physiological barriers, and cell-specific tropism.

ACS Biomater Sci Eng

October 2024

Department of Orthopedics, Shenzhen Institute of Translational Medicine, The First Affiliated Hospital of Shenzhen University, Shenzhen Second People's Hospital, Shenzhen 518035, Guangdong, China.

Exosomes are nanoscale membrane bound vesicles secreted by almost all types of cells. Their unique attributes, such as minimal immunogenicity and compatibility with biological systems, make them novel carriers for drug delivery. These native exosomes harbor proteins, nucleic acids, small molecule compounds, and fluorogenic agents.

Article Synopsis
  • Depression is increasingly recognized as a significant global psychological issue, with traditional detection methods criticized for their inefficiency and subjective nature.
  • A new framework called the Audio, Video, and Text Fusion-Three Branch Network (AVTF-TBN) integrates auditory, visual, and textual data for more accurate depression risk assessment through a multimodal approach.
  • Experimental results show that the AVTF-TBN model performs effectively in detecting depression risk, with metrics like F1 Score of 0.78, Precision of 0.76, and Recall of 0.81, highlighting the importance of sensor-based data in mental health evaluations.*

MHC1/LILRB1 axis as an innate immune checkpoint for cancer therapy.

Front Immunol

June 2024

Shanghai Frontiers Science Center for Drug Target Identification and Delivery, and the Engineering Research Center of Cell and Therapeutic Antibody of the Ministry of Education, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, National Key Laboratory of Innovative Immunotherapy, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, China.

Immune checkpoint blockades (ICBs) have revolutionized cancer therapy through unleashing anti-tumor adaptive immunity. Despite that, they are usually effective only in a small subset of patients and relapse can occur in patients who initially respond to the treatment. Recent breakthroughs in this field have identified innate immune checkpoints harnessed by cancer cells to escape immunosurveillance from innate immunity.

Objective: The present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) intervention in reducing problematic mobile phone use, depression, and sleep disorders among adolescents. Additionally, it sought to investigate whether the decrease in problematic mobile phone use acted as a mediator in the relationship between the MBCT intervention and adolescent depression and sleep disorders.

Methods: In a randomized controlled trial, a total of 104 adolescents were randomly assigned to the mindfulness group (n = 52) or the wait-list control group (n = 52).

Background And Purpose: Depression is closely linked with microglial activation and neuro-inflammation. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPAR-γ) plays an important role in M2 activation of microglia. Forkhead box (FOX) O3a has been implicated in the regulation of mood-relevant behaviour.

Article Synopsis
  • Depression has risen sharply among young people and is linked to issues in neural plasticity, which affects learning and behavior.
  • The study utilized a fear conditioning paradigm to evaluate how depressive symptoms impact fear learning, measuring both objective (skin conductance response) and subjective (ratings of nervousness, likeability) indicators.
  • Results showed that individuals with depressive symptoms had significant impairments in learning fear acquisition and extinction, indicating a potential deficit in associative learning compared to those without depressive symptoms.

Background: Although childhood maltreatment is a key risk factor for the development of psychopathology including depression in later life, not all children who have been maltreated subsequently become depressed.

Objective: The study aimed to examine the potentially moderating influence of resilience on the relationship between daily stress and different symptom dimensions of depression in adolescents with a history of childhood maltreatment.

Participants And Setting: A sample of students (n = 999) aged 12-16 years from middle schools with a history of childhood maltreatment participated in this study.

Article Synopsis
  • A study aimed to enhance predictive accuracy for overt hepatic encephalopathy (HE) risks in patients undergoing transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) by assessing changes in hepatic-associated vascular morphology.
  • The research involved 621 patients across multiple centers, creating predictive models that compared traditional clinical factors with vascular changes, ultimately finding that a combined model outperformed others in accuracy.
  • The findings indicate that evaluating vascular morphology can significantly improve predictions of HE risks, thus ensuring more patients have access to potentially curative TIPS rather than just palliative treatments.

This study explores the neural correlates between attentional control and trait anxiety among youth with a history of childhood maltreatment. Using diffusion tensor imaging, we investigated the microstructural integrity of brain white matter, particularly focusing on the right superior corona radiata (SCA-R). A total of 173 university students with experiences of childhood maltreatment underwent behavioral assessments using the Attentional Control Scale and trait anxiety measurements via the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory.

  • The study investigates the unique features and clinical importance of the nocturnal sleep onset rapid eye movement period (nSOREMP) in Chinese narcolepsy patients to improve understanding and treatment of the disorder worldwide.
  • A retrospective analysis was conducted using data from six hospitals and the Chinese Clinical Sleep Database, revealing a 2.51% nSOREMP prevalence in other sleep disorders and significant differences in various sleep metrics among narcolepsy patients with and without nSOREMP.
  • Findings indicate high nSOREMP prevalence (33.33% in type 1 and 28.30% in type 2 narcolepsy) and suggest that patients showing narcolepsy symptoms should undergo a Multiple Sleep Latency Test regardless of nocturnal polys

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia in the elderly. Recent evidence suggests that gamma-aminobutyric acid B (GABA) receptor-mediated inhibition is a major contributor to AD pathobiology, and GABA receptors have been hypothesized to be a potential target for AD treatment. The aim of this study is to determine how GABA regulation alters cognitive function and brain activity in an AD mouse model.

March 2024

Department of Addiction Medicine, Shenzhen Clinical Research Center for Mental Disorders, Shenzhen Kangning Hospital & Shenzhen Mental Health Center, No. 77 Zhenbi Road, Pingshan District, Shenzhen, 518118, Guangdong, China.

Estrogen regulates a wide range of neuronal functions in the brain, such as dendritic spine formation, remodeling of synaptic plasticity, cognition, neurotransmission, and neurodevelopment. Estrogen interacts with intracellular estrogen receptors (ERs) and membrane-bound ERs to produce its effect via genomic and non-genomic pathways. Any alterations in these pathways affect the number, size, and shape of dendritic spines in neurons associated with psychiatric diseases.
