As a key factor in tumorigenesis, progression, recurrence and metastasis, the biological properties, metabolic adaptations and immune escape mechanisms of CSCs are the focus of current oncological research. CSCs possess self-renewal, multidirectional differentiation and tumorigenicity, and their mechanisms of action can be elucidated by the clonal evolution, hierarchical model and the dynamic CSCs model, of which the dynamic model is widely recognized due to its better explanation of the function and origin of CSCs. The origin hypothesis of CSCs involves cell-cell fusion, horizontal gene transfer, genomic instability and microenvironmental regulation, which together shape the diversity of CSCs.

August 2024

Department of Pharmaceutical Analysis, Shenyang Medical College, Shenyang, 113004, People's Republic of China.

Neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and Huntington's disease, pose significant health challenges and economic burdens worldwide. Recent studies have emphasized the potential therapeutic value of activating silent information regulator-1 (SIRT1) in treating these conditions. Resveratrol, a compound known for its ability to potently activate SIRT1, has demonstrated promising neuroprotective effects by targeting the underlying mechanisms of neurodegeneration.

Brain macrophage senescence in glioma.

Semin Cancer Biol

September 2024

Department of Rehabilitation, Shengjing Hospital of China Medical University, Shenyang, Liaoning 110004, China. Electronic address:

Gliomas are a diverse group of primary central nervous system neoplasms with no curative therapies available. Brain macrophages comprise microglia in the brain parenchyma, border-associated macrophages in the meningeal-choroid plexus-perivascular space and monocyte-derived macrophages infiltrating the brain. With the great improvement of our recognition of brain macrophages, diverse macrophage populations have been found in the context of glioma, which exhibit functional and phenotypic heterogeneity.

Metastasis, the primary cause of death in lung cancer patients, is facilitated by cytoskeleton remodeling, which plays a crucial role in cancer cell migration and invasion. However, the precise regulatory mechanisms of intracellular trafficking proteins involved in cytoskeleton remodeling remain unclear. In this study, we have identified Rabenosyn-5 (Rbsn) as an inhibitor of filopodia formation and lung cancer metastasis.

September 2024

Department of Pathophysiology, College of Basic Medical Sciences, China Medical University, Shenyang 110122, China. Electronic address:

The E2F transcription factor family, whose members are encoded by the E2F1-E2F8 genes, plays pivotal roles in the cell cycle, apoptosis, metabolism, stemness, metastasis, aging, angiogenesis, tumor promotion or suppression, and other biological processes. The activity of E2Fs is regulated at multiple levels, with posttranslational modifications being an important regulatory mechanism. There are numerous types of posttranslational modifications, among which phosphorylation, acetylation, methylation, ubiquitination, SUMOylation, neddylation, and poly(ADP-ribosyl)ation are the most commonly studied in the context of the E2F family.

Dysregulation of cholesterol homeostasis occurs in multiple types of tumors and promotes cancer progression. Investigating the specific processes that induce abnormal cholesterol metabolism could identify therapeutic targets to improve cancer treatment. In this investigation, we observed upregulation of 7-dehydrocholesterol reductase (DHCR7), a vital enzyme involved in the synthesis of cholesterol, within bladder cancer tissues in comparison to normal tissues, which was correlated with increased bladder cancer metastasis.

Inspired by the outstanding nature of flavonoid derivatives in the fields of chemistry and medicine, in this work we mainly focus on exploring the photo-induced properties of the novel EtN-substituted flavonoid (ENF) fluorophore theoretically. Considering the potential photo-induced properties in different solvents and the chalcogen atomic electronegativity-associated photoexcitation, by time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) methods we primarily explore the intramolecular hydrogen bonding interactions and photo-induced charge redistribution behaviors. Via comparing geometrical data and the infrared (IR) spectral shifts-associated hydroxy moiety of ENF, we confirm that the intramolecular hydrogen bond O-H···O should be enhanced with facilitating an excited-state intramolecular proton-transfer (ESIPT) reaction.
