Objective: T cell immunoglobulin and mucin domain-3 (Tim-3) may be implicated in neuroinflammation. Herein, we attempted to discern the role of serum soluble (s) Tim-3 as an inflammatory prognostic biomarker of severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI).

Methods: In this prospective observational study of 112 sTBI patients and 112 controls, serum sTim-3 levels were determined, Rotterdam computed tomography (CT) classification and Glasgow coma scale (GCS) were selected as the two severity indicators, serum C-reactive protein (CRP) was regarded as an inflammatory biomarker, and poor prognosis was referred to as extended Glasgow outcome scale (GOSE) scores 1-4 at 180 days after trauma.

Objective: Currently, the choice between laparoscopic surgery and conventional laparotomy in the surgical treatment of acute cholangitis of severe type (ACST) is debatable. This study compared the clinical efficacy of these two surgical methods through a meta-analysis based on relevant clinical randomized controlled trials (RCT) on ACST.

Methods: We systematically searched several databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and WangFang) for RCT on the surgical treatment of ACST between 2010 and 2022.

LY450139 Inhibited Ti-Particle-Induced Bone Dissolution via Suppressing Notch and NF-κB Signaling Pathways.

Calcif Tissue Int

August 2022

Shanghai Key Laboratory of Orthopaedic Implants, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, Shanghai, China.

Aseptic loosening of the prosthesis caused by wear-particle-induced osteolysis is a long-term complication and one of the most common reasons for the failure of joint implants. The primary cause of aseptic loosening of the prosthesis is overactive bone resorption caused by wear-particle-activated osteoclasts in both direct and indirect ways. Therefore, drugs that can inhibit differentiation and bone resorption of osteoclasts need investigation as a potential therapeutic strategy to prevent and treat peri-prosthetic osteolysis and thereby prolong the service life of the prosthesis.

Background: Hemangiopericytoma (HPC), also known as solitary fibrous tumor (SFT), is a type of soft tissue sarcoma with a special aggressive behavior. The HPC/SFT is locally aggressive with possibility of late recurrence locally or distant extraneural metastasis. The most common location of this HPC/SFT is the lower extremities.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explored the effectiveness and feasibility of combined chemotherapy and radiotherapy (CRT) in elderly patients (70+) with esophageal cancer (EC) undergoing surgery, analyzing data from 1085 patients from 1998 to 2016.
  • Results indicated that patients receiving both surgery and CRT had significantly better survival outcomes compared to those who had surgery alone, particularly among those with more aggressive tumor characteristics.
  • The research proposed a new nomogram model for evaluating patient risk and suggested it may provide better prognostic accuracy than the traditional TNM staging system, emphasizing the benefits of aggressive treatment for select elderly patients.

Evaluation of the feasibility of acetabular cup pre-determination in revision total hip arthroplasty via X-ray of the bone stock of the anterosuperior acetabulum.

J Orthop Surg Res

October 2021

Shanghai Key Laboratory of Orthopaedic Implants, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital, Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine, 639 Zhizaoju Road, Shanghai, 200011, People's Republic of China.

Purpose: This study was aimed to explore (1) location on AP pelvic X-ray that displayed bone stock in anterosuperior acetabulum; (2) whether X-ray could provide enough evidence to evaluate whether bone stock could provide support for acetabular cup; (3) criteria to determine whether anterosuperior bone stock could provide sufficient support for cup on X-ray.

Methods: Our study retrospectively collected 43 patients who underwent revision THA for cup loosening from 2014 to 2019. The position of anterosuperior acetabular bone stock was compared between X-ray and CT-based 3-D reconstruction.

Background: Hypoxia-inducible factor 1alpha (HIF-1α) is implicated in the cell's response to hypoxia. We investigated whether serum HIF-1α concentrations are correlated with the severity and clinical outcome of severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI).

Methods: Serum HIF-1α concentrations were quantified in 104 sTBI patients and 80 healthy controls.

The purpose of this article was to systematically evaluate the clinical efficacy of laparoscopy-assisted distal gastrectomy (LDG) and open distal gastrectomy (ODG) in the treatment of gastric carcinoma (GC). PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, CNKI, and Wanfang databases were systematically searched for relevant articles on surgical treatment of GC published from 2010 to 2020. GC patients in the treatment group received LDG, whereas those in the control group received ODG.

Exosomes from human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (HUCMSCs) containing microRNAs (miRNAs) have been underscored as possible therapeutic options for cancers. Hence, our goal here was to investigate the relevance of miR-320a-containing exosomes from HUCMSCs to lung cancer. First, H1299 and H460 cells were co-cultured with the exosomes overexpressing miR-320a from HUCMSCs.

Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) has been a devastating actuality and accounts for half of cardiovascular emergency department visits. Nucleotide oligomerization domain, leucine-rich repeat, and pyrin domain-containing protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome participates in the mediation of myocardial inflammation during AMI. Therefore, this study aimed to reveal the therapeutic function of tranilast, an agent targeting NLRP3, for AMI.

Neurovascular Unit: A critical role in ischemic stroke.

CNS Neurosci Ther

January 2021

Department of Neurosurgery, First Affiliated Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China.

Ischemic stroke (IS), a common cerebrovascular disease, results from a sudden blockage of a blood vessel in the brain, thereby restricting blood supply to the area in question, and making a significantly negative impact on human health. Unfortunately, current treatments, that are mainly based on a recanalization of occluded blood vessels, are insufficient or inaccessible to many stroke patients. Recently, the profound influence of the neurovascular unit (NVU) on recanalization and the prognosis of IS have become better understood; in-depth studies of the NVU have also provided novel approaches for IS treatment.
