In recent years considerable variations in conditioning protocols for allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT) protocols have been introduced for higher efficacy, lower toxicity, and better outcomes. To overcome the limitations of the classical definition of reduced intensity and myeloablative conditioning, a transplantation conditioning intensity (TCI) score had been developed. In this study, we compared outcome after two frequently used single alkylator-based conditioning protocols from the intermediate TCI score category, fludarabine/melphalan 140 mg/m (FluMel) and fludarabine/treosulfan 42 g/m (FluTreo) for patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in complete remission (CR).

Purpose: ANCA-associated vasculitides (AAV) represent a group of diagnoses, including granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA) and microscopic polyangiitis (MPA). Most commonly, they present initially with ENT-associated symptomatology, and therefore they often pose a diagnostic challenge. We aim to present our one-year experience in the joint management of AAV in a multi-disciplinary setting.

Deep Vein Thrombosis is Common After Cardiac Ablation and Pre-Procedural D-Dimer Could Predict Risk.

Heart Lung Circ

July 2022

Manchester Heart Centre, Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, Manchester, UK; Division of Cardiovascular Sciences within the School of Medicine, University of Manchester, Manchester, UK. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Cardiac catheter ablation is a common treatment for supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), but this study investigated the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) following the procedure.
  • A cohort of 80 patients, who were not on anticoagulants before the procedure, was monitored for DVT using ultrasound at 24 hours and again between 10 to 14 days post-ablation.
  • The study found that 8.8% of patients developed DVT in the leg where the catheter was inserted, particularly among those with elevated D-dimer levels, suggesting the potential need for preventive anticoagulation during the procedure.

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in the rapid development of a range of vaccines against SARS-CoV-2. Vaccine-induced immune thrombocytopenia and thrombosis (VITT) is a rare but life-threatening complication of primarily adenoviral-based vaccines associated with the presence of antibodies to a PF4/polyanion neoepitope and measured by using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Presented are serial anti-PF4/polyanion antibody, platelet, and D-dimer measurements in a large cohort of patients and their relation to relapse.

Background: Despite studies using localized high density contact mapping and lower resolution panoramic approaches, the mechanisms that sustain human persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) remain unresolved. Voltage mapping is commonly employed as a surrogate of atrial substrate to guide ablation procedures.

Objective: To study the distribution and temporal stability of activation during persistent AF using a global non-contact charge density approach and compare the findings with bipolar contact mapping.

Autologous hematopoietic cell transplantation (auto-HCT) may be performed in multiple myeloma (MM) patients relapsing after a previous auto-HCT. For those without an adequate dose of stored stem cells, remobilization is necessary. This retrospective study included patients who, following disease relapse after the first auto-HCT(s), underwent stem cell remobilization and auto-HCT performed using these cells.

Diagnostics (Basel)

November 2021

Translational Medical Sciences Academic Unit, School of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, University of Nottingham, Nottingham NG7 2UH, UK.

Article Synopsis
  • Perianal Crohn's Disease (pCD) is a key type of Crohn's Disease where effective monitoring is challenged due to unreliable disease measures.
  • Qualitative MRI has become valuable in diagnosing and tracking pCD, while quantitative MRI techniques like diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and T2 relaxometry offer potential improvements in diagnosis.
  • In a study of 25 pCD patients, while no significant changes were observed in MRI measurements after 12 weeks of treatment, clinical indicators like PDAI and CRP did decrease, suggesting these could help predict treatment response more effectively.

Widespread adoption of next-generation techniques such as RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) has enabled research examining the transcriptome of anucleate blood platelets in health and disease, thus revealing a rich platelet transcriptomic signature that is reprogrammed in response to disease. Platelet signatures not only capture information from parent megakaryocytes and progenitor hematopoietic stem cells but also the bone marrow microenvironment, and underlying disease states. In cancer, the substantive body of research in patients with solid tumours has identified distinct signatures in 'tumour-educated platelets', reflecting influences of the tumour, stroma and vasculature on splicing, sequestration of tumour-derived RNAs, and potentially cytokine and microvesicle influences on megakaryocytes.
