Biomed Opt Express

March 2024

State Key Laboratory of Quantum Optics and Quantum Optics Devices, Institute of Laser Spectroscopy, Shanxi University, Taiyuan, China.

Timely and accurate identification of harmful bacterial species in the environment is paramount for preventing the spread of diseases and ensuring food safety. In this study, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy technology was utilized, combined with four machine learning methods - KNN, PCA-KNN, RF, and SVM, to conduct classification and identification research on 7 different types of bacteria, adhering to various substrate materials. The experimental results showed that despite the nearly identical elemental composition of these bacteria, differences in the intensity of elemental spectral lines provide crucial information for identification of bacteria.

Selective stepwise adsorption for enhanced removal of multi-component dissolved organic chemicals from petrochemical wastewater.

Sci Total Environ

February 2024

State Key Laboratory of Water Environment Simulation, School of Environment, Beijing Normal University, Beijing, 100875, PR China; The Key Laboratory of Water and Sediment Sciences, Ministry of Education, School of Environment, Beijing Normal University, Beijing 100875, PR China. Electronic address:

The coexistence of multi-component dissolved organic chemicals causes tremendous challenge in purifying petrochemical wastewater, and stepwise selective adsorption holds the most promise for enhanced treatments. This study is designed to enhance the removal of multiple dissolved organic chemicals by stepwise adsorption. Special attention is given to the selective removal mechanisms for the major pollutant N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), the sensitive pollutant fluorescent dissolved organic matter (FDOM) and other components.

Amphoteric composite of ZrP and N-doped porous carbon: Synthesis, characterization, and potential use for cycloaddition of CO.

Heliyon

November 2023

College of Environmental and Resource, Research Center of Environment and Health, Shanxi University, Taiyuan, 030006, PR China.

Composites of amorphous ZrP and N-doped carbon were prepared in a one-step pyrolysis process instead of general post-loading technique. Owing to their mesoporous structure (6-10 nm) and Zr content (up to 41 wt%), the amphoteric materials have potential use in the cycloaddition of CO to epoxides, which is an acid‒base tandem process including the ring opening of epoxides and the addition of CO. Substantial work has been done on how starting materials impact the structure and performance of composite materials.

The effective utilization of charcoal and tar byproducts is a challenge for pyrolysis gasification of bamboo. Herein, the bamboo tar was modified via polymerization and acted as a new adhesive for the preparation of excellent bamboo-charcoal-derived molding activated carbon (MBAC). As compared with pristine tar and other adhesives, the aromatization of tar with phenol increased its molecular weight, oxygenic functional groups, and thermal stability, leading to the decreased blocking impact of charcoal pore and improved bonding and pyrolytic crosslinking effect between charcoal particles.

Non-contact bacterial identification and decontamination based on laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy.

J Photochem Photobiol B

July 2023

State Key Laboratory of Quantum Optics and Quantum Optics Devices, Institute of Laser Spectroscopy, Shanxi University, Taiyuan, China; Collaborative Innovation Center of Extreme Optics, Shanxi University, Taiyuan, China.

As a new kind of modern military biological weapon, bacterial agents pose a serious threat to the public health security of human beings. Existing bacterial identification requires manual sampling and testing, which is time-consuming, and may also introduce secondary contamination or radioactive hazards during decontamination. In this paper, a non-contact, nondestructive and "green" bacterial identification and decontamination technology based on laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is proposed.

Matrix stiffness-induced platelet activation determines immunomodulation of macrophages.

Biomater Adv

May 2023

Shanxi Key Laboratory of Biomedical Metal Materials, College of Materials Science and Engineering, Taiyuan University of Technology, Taiyuan 030024, China.

Although various bone defect repair materials have been used clinically, the influence of the material properties on bone repair and regeneration as well as the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. We hypothesize that the material stiffness affects initial platelet activation during hemostasis phase, which in turn mediates subsequent osteoimmunomodulation of macrophages, finally determining clinical outcomes. To verify the hypothesis, the present work used polyacrylamide hydrogels with different stiffness (10, 70, and 260 kPa) as model materials to investigate matrix stiffness induced platelet activation behavior and its mediation on osteoimmunomodulation of macrophages.

Study on direct identification of bacteria by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy.

Anal Methods

January 2023

State Key Laboratory of Quantum Optics and Quantum Optics Devices, Institute of Laser Spectroscopy, Shanxi University, Taiyuan, China.

Bacteria are everywhere in the natural environment. Although most of them are harmless, there are still some hazardous bacteria that will harm human health, so it is particularly important to identify bacteria quickly. Compared with traditional time-consuming and complicated identification methods, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is one of the potential technologies for rapid identification of bacteria.

Programmable Thermo-Responsive Actuation of Hydrogels via Light-Guided Surface Growth of Active Layers on Shape Memory Substrates.

Macromol Rapid Commun

February 2023

Key Laboratory of Syngas Conversion of Shaanxi Province, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Shaanxi Normal University, Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, 71006, China.

Hydrogel shape memory and actuating functionalities are heavily pursued and have found great potential in various application fields. However, their combination for more flexible and complicated morphing behaviors is still challenging. Herein, it is reported that by controlling the light-initiated polymerization of active hydrogel layers on shape memory hydrogel substrates, advanced morphing behaviors based on programmable hydrogel shapes and actuating trajectories are realized.

Traditional air filter papers can only filter toxic aerosols without the function of decontamination. If the poison stagnating in the paper is desorbed, it may pose a secondary threat to personnel and make it more difficult to dispose of the scrapped paper. Using an alkali-free glass fiber as the base material and zirconium hydroxide as the decontaminant, a self-decontaminating air filter paper that can degrade HD and VX simultaneously was successfully prepared by an intra-pulp addition method, with high filtration efficiency, low pressure drop and moderate tensile strength.

Two compounds containing carbazole and sulfone groups with different alkyl chain lengths have been designed and synthesized. The sulfone group has strong absorption characteristics and the alkoxy chain and carbazole group are electron-rich, forming D-δ-A-type symmetrical molecules. The molecules have the characteristics of charge transfer and high thermal stability, and the molecules stack to form a layered staggered stack, reducing the intermolecular π-π interactions.
