Atherosclerosis is a primary cause of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, with the unpredictable rupture of vulnerable atherosclerotic plaques enriched with lipid-laden macrophages being able to lead to heart attacks and strokes. Activating macrophage autophagy presents itself as a promising strategy for preventing vulnerable plaque formation and reducing the risk of rupture. In this study, we have developed a novel metal-free nanozyme (HCN@DS) that integrates the functions of multimodal imaging-guided therapy for atherosclerosis.

Article Synopsis
  • Pathological thrombus can lead to severe health issues like heart attacks and strokes, complicating effective treatment and monitoring.
  • Researchers developed a multifunctional nanoplatform (TG-OPDEA@UK/MnO-H1080) to enhance thrombus penetration and enable real-time monitoring through advanced fluorescence imaging.
  • The nanoparticles, designed to carry a thrombolytic agent and a fluorescent marker, displayed a significant increase in therapeutic effectiveness while minimizing bleeding risks in a mouse model.

Objectives: To seek a triple combination of biomarkers for early diagnosis of chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone metabolic disorder and to explore the diagnostic efficacy of β2-microglobulin, parathyroid hormone and blood urea nitrogen in chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone metabolic disorder.

Participants: We collected medical records of 864 patients with chronic kidney disease (without direct contact with patients) and divided them into two groups based on the renal bone disease manifestations of all patients.

Primary And Secondary Outcome Measures: There were 148 and 716 subjects in the Chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone metabolic disorder and the control groups, respectively.

Fluoroquinolone (FQ) antibiotics, one of the leading environmental pollutants, have ecotoxic effects that can accumulate through ecosystems and harm human health. The determination of FQs is still difficult due to the complex matrix, many interfering factors, and low concentration. Hence, a magnetic microporous organic network (MON) composite denoted as FeO@MON-NH@CM-β-CD with excellent FQ adsorption performance was prepared by β-CD covalent modification of a MON.

Background: Oxidative stress is a significant contributor to the development of various diseases, and the oxidative balance score (OBS) is a valuable tool for assessing the impact of dietary and lifestyle factors on oxidative stress in humans. Nevertheless, the precise relationship between OBS and thyroid function in adults remains elusive.

Methods: This cross-sectional study comprised 6222 adult participants drawn from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted from 2007 to 2012.

Objective: This study investigated the diagnostic performance of thrombin-antithrombin complex (TAT), plasmin-α2 plasmin inhibitor complex (PIC), tissue plasminogen activator-plasminogen activator inhibitor complex (t-PAIC), and thrombomodulin (TM) in predicting the progression of massive cerebral infarction to the malignant cerebral artery infarction.

Method: A total of 71 patients with massive cerebral infarction confirmed by imaging examination were divided into malignant cerebral artery infarction group (MCAI) and non-malignant cerebral artery infarction group (NMCAI) based on whether they progressed to MCAI after admission. TAT, PIC, t-PAIC, and TM were measured immediately after admission.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the role of sympathetic nerve infiltration in the progression of stomach adenocarcinoma (STAD), revealing significant findings regarding the interaction between nerves and cancer development.
  • It was found that sympathetic nerves and certain biomarkers were significantly elevated in STAD tissues compared to adjacent tissues, indicating a strong correlation between nerve activity and cancer progression.
  • The research highlights that activation of β2-AR signaling enhances cancer cell behaviors such as proliferation and invasion, linking this pathway to poor patient survival and stressing the importance of targeting nerve-related mechanisms in STAD treatment.

Purpose: We conducted a retrospective study to compare transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) plus lenvatinib plus programmed death-1 (PD-1) inhibitors with TACE plus lenvatinib in patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

Patients And Methods: Patients with HCC were analyzed from January 2018 to January 2022 in three hospitals. Patients received TACE plus lenvatinib with or without PD-1 inhibitors (TACE+L+PD-1 or TACE+L, respectively).

Isolation and characterisation of Pulsatilla Radix-utilising bacteria Pediococcus pentosaceus PR-1 from human faeces.

FEMS Microbiol Lett

October 2022

Key lab of Medical Molecular Cell Biology of Shanxi Province, Institutes of Biomedical Sciences, Shanxi University, Taiyuan 030006, China.

Although probiotics have been isolated from different sources, few were isolated from traditional Chinese medicine. The current study firstly isolates Pulsatilla Radix-utilising Pediococcus pentosaceus PR-1 from human faeces. Subsequently, the tolerance of PR-1 to low pH, bile salts, simulated gastric juice and succus entericus, antioxidant activity, antimicrobial activity, cholesterol assimilation and antibiotics susceptibility were investigated.

Background: Sepsis is a serious and elusive syndrome caused by infection, with high mortality worldwide. Circular RNAs vacuolar ATPase assembly factor (circVMA21) has been reported to be related to the inflammatory damages in sepsis. This study is designed to explore the role and mechanism of circVMA21 in the lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced cell injury in sepsis.

Background: Ovarian cancer, the malignant tumor with the highest mortality rate in gynecological tumors, leads to a poor prognosis due to tumor metastasis. At present, the main treatment for ovarian cancer is the combination of cytoreduction surgery and chemotherapy. But the surgery is insufficient to solve the extensive transfer of tumor in the abdominal cavity and a large proportion of ovarian cancer cases have shown resistance to chemotherapy.

Background: Cerebral venous outflow obstruction involves idiopathic intracranial hypertension, and the most common related condition is dural venous sinus stenosis or, in other words, an obstruction of the dural venous sinuses. In these cases, the pathological process is often chronic, displays only mild symptoms, and rarely requires urgent surgical intervention. In this study, we present a unique case involving an acute cerebral venous outflow obstruction that occurred during meningioma resection that ultimately had catastrophic consequences.

We provide a case report of a 58-year-old man who presented with a ruptured fusiform dissecting aneurysm located at the junction of the vertebral artery and posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA). Due to the lesion's complexity, a two-step approach was planned for revascularisation of PICA using the occipital artery (OA) prior to coiling embolisation. An end-to-side OA-PICA bypass was performed with implantation at the caudal loop of the p3 PICA segment.

BACKGROUND We previously reported that cerebellar fastigial nucleus stimulation reduced post-stroke depression in a rat model by reducing inflammation. This study aimed to investigate the molecular inflammatory signaling pathways associated with cerebellar fastigial nucleus stimulation in an established rat model of post-stroke depression. MATERIAL AND METHODS Twenty-four Sprague-Dawley rats included a sham group (N=6), an untreated stroke group (N=6), an untreated post-stroke depression model group (PSD) (N=6), and the model group treated with cerebellar fastigial nucleus stimulation (FNS) (N=6).
