An explainable artificial intelligence framework for risk prediction of COPD in smokers.

BMC Public Health

November 2023

Department of Health Statistics, School of Public Health, Shanxi Medical University, 56 South XinJian Road, Taiyuan, 030001, P.R. China.

Background: Since the inconspicuous nature of early signs associated with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), individuals often remain unidentified, leading to suboptimal opportunities for timely prevention and treatment. The purpose of this study was to create an explainable artificial intelligence framework combining data preprocessing methods, machine learning methods, and model interpretability methods to identify people at high risk of COPD in the smoking population and to provide a reasonable interpretation of model predictions.

Methods: The data comprised questionnaire information, physical examination data and results of pulmonary function tests before and after bronchodilatation.

The present study investigated the potential interaction between miR-526b and lncRNA SLC16A1-AS1 in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). Expression of miR-526b and SLC16A1-AS1 in TNBC tumor tissues and paired nontumor tissues from 60 TNBC patients was detected by real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). The interaction between miR-526b and SLC16A1-AS1 was evaluated with overexpression experiments, followed by RT-qPCR.

Machine learning-enabled risk prediction of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease with unbalanced data.

Comput Methods Programs Biomed

March 2023

Department of Health Statistics, School of Public Health, Shanxi Medical University, 56 South XinJian Road, Taiyuan, Shanxi 030001, China. Electronic address:

Background And Objective: Since the early symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are not obvious, patients are not easily identified, causing improper time for prevention and treatment. In present study, machine learning (ML) methods were employed to construct a risk prediction model for COPD to improve its prediction efficiency.

Methods: We collected data from a sample of 5807 cases with a complete COPD diagnosis from the 2019 COPD Surveillance Program in Shanxi Province and extracted 34 potentially relevant variables from the dataset.

This study aimed to investigate the possible molecular mechanisms associated with ischemic stroke through the construction of a lncRNA-miRNA-mRNA network. miRNA expression profile in GSE55937, mRNA and lncRNA expression profiles in GSE122709, and mRNA expression profile in GSE146882 were downloaded from the NCBI GEO database. After the identification of the differentially expressed miRNA, lncRNA, and mRNA using GSE55937 and GSE122709 in ischemic stroke control groups, a protein-protein interaction (PPI) network was constructed.

LncRNA CALML3-AS1 regulates chondrocyte apoptosis by acting as a sponge for miR-146a.

Autoimmunity

September 2021

Department of Rheumatology and Immunology, Shanxi People's Hospital, Taiyuan City, Shaanxi Province, China.

Chondrocyte apoptosis contributes to osteoarthritis, while miR-146a is a critical player in chondrocyte apoptosis. Our bioinformatics analysis showed that miR-146a may bind with long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) CALML3 antisense RNA 1 (CALML3-AS1). Our study was therefore carried out to investigate the interactions between lncRNA CALML3-AS1 and miR-146a in osteoarthritis.

Autoantibodies against M-type phospholipase A2 receptor (PLA2R) serve as specific biomarkers for idiopathic membranous nephropathy (IMN), and its quantification helps monitor disease activity. In this study, we describe a rapid and highly sensitive quantum dots-based immunochromatography assay (QD-ICA) for quantifying PLA2R autoantibodies. Serum samples from 135 biopsy-confirmed patients with nephrotic syndrome were analyzed for PLA2R autoantibodies using the novel QD-ICA as well as commercialized enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).

Local anesthetic with bupivacaine (BV) administration may cause severe neurotoxicity and neurological complications in developing neurons. Any substances that can mitigate the toxic effects of BV are of great importance in surgical procedures and pain management. The present study attempted to investigate if hesperidin (HN) could inhibit or prevent BV-induced neurotoxicity in SH-SY5Y cells.

February 2022

Department of Ultrasound in Medicine, Shanghai Jiao Tong University Affiliated Sixth People's Hospital, Shanghai Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, Shanghai, China.

Objectives: The aim of this study is to explore whether low-frequency ultrasound combined with microbubbles improves pEGFP genes transfection into human prostate cancer cells.

Methods: Ultrasound with frequency of 80 kHz and duty cycle of 50% was adopted in the study; in in vitro experiments, cell lysis, and membrane damage were evaluated after ultrasound exposure; and the membrane continuity and transfection efficiency were observed by transmission electron microscope and laser scanner, respectively. Human prostate cancer xenograft models were exposed to ultrasound and transfection efficiency and histological examination were analyzed.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms including deep learning have recently demonstrated remarkable progress in image-recognition tasks. Here, we utilized AI for monitoring the expression of underglycosylated mucin 1 (uMUC1) tumor antigen, a biomarker for ovarian cancer progression and response to therapy, using contrast-enhanced in vivo imaging. This was done using a dual-modal (magnetic resonance and near infrared optical imaging) uMUC1-specific probe (termed MN-EPPT) consisted of iron-oxide magnetic nanoparticles (MN) conjugated to a uMUC1-specific peptide (EPPT) and labeled with a near-infrared fluorescent dye, Cy5.

Introduction: Pure mucinous carcinoma is a rare type of breast carcinoma, but it usually has a favorable prognosis. Tumors of pure mucinous carcinoma are typically positive for both estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PR), and they do not commonly overexpress human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2). However, when tumors have HER2 overexpression and are progesterone receptor negative, the prognosis is worse.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is one of the most common aggressive cancers of the central nervous system in adults with a high mortality rate. Bortezomib is a boronic acid-based potent proteasome inhibitor that has been actively studied for its anti-tumour effects through inhibition of the proteasome. The proteasome is a key component of the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway that is critical for protein homeostasis, regulation of cellular growth, and apoptosis.
