Complement Ther Med

August 2020

Department of Emergency, Minhang Hospital, Fudan University, No. 170 Xinsong Road, Minhang District, Shanghai, 201199, China. Electronic address:

Background & Objective: Walnut intake is considered a healthy dietary approach worldwide, particularly as a nutritional tool for the management of obesity and cardiometabolic disorders. Among these lines, leptin and adiponectin, as well as glycemic biomarkers, deserve further attention. We aimed to examine the impact of walnut intake on circulation levels of leptin and adiponectin through a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials (RCTs); secondarily, assessing the glycemic profile as well.

Article Synopsis
  • HMGB1 is crucial for causing liver injury and fibrosis, promoting the activation and growth of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) and increasing collagen and α-SMA protein levels.
  • The increase in HSC proliferation due to HMGB1 is linked to the upregulation of miR-146b, which negatively regulates HNF1A expression.
  • Targeting and inhibiting HMGB1 can alleviate liver fibrosis, indicating that the HMGB1/p65/miR-146b/HNF1A signaling pathway plays a significant role in liver fibrogenesis.

Background: This study aims to explore blueberry polyphenols and its roles in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) by relieving hepatic steatosis, and to understand alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD). Cell autophagy has been proved to promote lipid metabolism and is involved in the pathogenesis of AFLD; however, whether blueberry polyphenol affects autophagy is unknown. Therefore, our study analyzes the functions of blueberry polyphenol on AFLD and if its mechanisms are engaged with hepatocytes autophagy.

Background: AOC1 is a copper-containing amine oxidase that is responsible for catalyzing the deamination of polyamines, which produces reactive oxygen species. Previous studies have demonstrated that polyamines are involved in the regulation of proliferation, migration, and apoptosis of cells. However, very little is known about the functions and regulatory mechanisms of AOC1 in tumors.

Background: The relationship between serum hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and atrial fibrillation (AF) or postoperative AF (POAF) in coronary artery bypass (CABG) patients is still under debate. It is also unclear whether there is a dose-response relationship between circulating HbA1c and the risk of AF or POAF.

Methods And Results: The Cochrane Library, PubMed, and EMBASE databases were searched.

We investigate the correlation of serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) level and its gene polymorphism with liver function classification in patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV) induced liver cirrhosis. A total of 182 patients with HBV induced liver cirrhosis were collected as a case group, and 186 healthy subjects in the same period were used as the control group. ELISA measured serum BDNF levels.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) often causes delayed wound healing in patients, which can lead to limb loss, disability, and even death. Many conventional therapeutic strategies have been proposed, but there is still no effective therapy for DM wounds. This study aimed to explore the effects of CD271 and phosphorylated tyrosine kinase receptor A (pTrkA) on the migration and proliferation abilities of epidermal stem cells (eSCs) and on the activation of DM wound healing.

Background: microRNAs (miRNAs) have been implicated to play crucial roles in carcinogenesis. miR-1249-3p was reported to be abnormally expressed in multiple human cancers. However, its biological role and the associated underlying mechanisms in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remain largely unknown.

Inflammatory myositis (IM) and myasthenia gravis (MG) are both immune disorders involving muscle. The concurrent presence of both conditions in the same patient is extremely rare and the diagnosis is important and challenging. Here, we report a case of concurrent myositis and myocarditis and MG without thymoma in a 69-year-old man with progressive proximal muscle weakness and dysphagia.

Chromodomain helicase/ATPase DNA‑binding protein 1‑like gene (CHD1L) is a new oncogene which has been confirmed to be crucial to the progression of many solid tumors. In the present study, the expression of CHD1L was found to be upregulated in intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC), which was significantly associated with histological differentiation (P=0.011), vascular invasion (P=0.

Background: Cervical cancer has the fourth highest incidence and mortality rate of all cancers in women worldwide; it seriously harms their physical and mental health. The aim of this study was to observe the roles and preliminary mechanism of Taurine (Tau)-induced apoptosis in cervical cancer cells.

Methods: Cells from the human cervical cancer cell line SiHa were transfected with the recombinant plasmid pEGFP-N1-MST1 (mammalian sterile 20-like kinase 1); then, the cell proliferation activity was analyzed by the MTT assay, cell apoptosis by flow cytometry, and the related protein levels by Western blotting.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of microRNA (miR)-34a on spinal cord injury (SCI)-induced inflammation and the possible underlying mechanisms. The results indicated that miR-34a expression was downregulated in a rat model of SCI compared with the control group. Furthermore, miR-34a knockdown was demonstrated to aggravate inflammation, inhibit cell proliferation and enhance apoptosis in an model of SCI.

Background: The prognostic value of pretreatment systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) in lung cancer has yet to be fully established.

Methods: Relevant articles were obtained by performing a systematic search. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were used to assess the relationship between SII index and overall survival (OS) in lung cancer; the OS was calculated from the time of cancer diagnosis to the date of death due to any cause or to the last date of follow-up.
